Algerian Goalkeeper, Saturday, 29 September 2012 23:19 (thirteen years ago)

that giant sand album is great

Algerian Goalkeeper, Saturday, 29 September 2012 23:19 (thirteen years ago)

Well, I'm listening to some Terrorizer right now, and was gonna suggest a bit of that to put a spring in yr. step.

For real, how many votes for Mercyful Fate? The number was left out when the album was rolled out.

love that gore album, in my top 20 iirc. agree with AG re: its prescience and influence.

great album, but sometimes the concept outstrips the execution. I think it intentionally toys w/the fine line between psych and monotony, driving metal down dead ends to find the breaking points in its aggressive minimalism. v. much an art project in that way, but I'm not always in the mood f/that gamesmanship.

Hellhouse, Saturday, 29 September 2012 23:38 (thirteen years ago)

that being said, I think there's a lot of Gore in Prong's Beg to Differ, just f/one example.

Btw, I really do think Rush's "Hemispheres" and bits of King Crimson's Red sound like proto-math rock

EveningStar (Sund4r), Saturday, 29 September 2012 23:56 (thirteen years ago)

Oh My Gawd was first Lips album I ever heard, and it's still my favorite. I saw them on that tour and they were tons of fun (not like the smarmy self-conscious "fun" they've been since the mid-90s or so -- or maybe the smarm was more charming in a dive bar than a big stage). "Everything's Explodin" is a great album opener, probably my favorite song of theirs.

Early Lips rocks harder?

fuck yes

EveningStar (Sund4r), Sunday, 30 September 2012 00:08 (thirteen years ago)

I sometimes wonder how I'd think of Sonic Youth if I'd been exposed to more noisy and dissonant guitar rock (other than e.g. Hendrix) before I first heard them.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Sunday, 30 September 2012 00:11 (thirteen years ago)

just started plowing my way through the Fushitsusha. substantial art damage trussed w/a thin thread of trad. psych seems to be the plan. digging 10:21 atm, any other recommendations?

Hellhouse, Sunday, 30 September 2012 00:12 (thirteen years ago)

I'm still here.

I voted for the Green on Red album, which is on Spotify. I kind of want to recommend it to some dude, I suspect it might be something he would dig, kind of Stones-y country rock, like a better version of 80s Soul Asylum without the Du influence (which maybe a circuitous way to say sounds like the 'Mats)

Fushitsusha album is okay; I think I'm just now starting to get Haino after hearing this year's Hikari To Nazukeyou, which makes me want to check out this album again along with the Live II from '91

is Current 93 one of those controversial "Nazi" bands?

Bo

oh

alpha flighticles (Drugs A. Money), Sunday, 30 September 2012 00:39 (thirteen years ago)

Current 93 is a nww associate. Maybe you are thinking of Boyd rice.

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Sunday, 30 September 2012 00:39 (thirteen years ago)

C93 are great

Algerian Goalkeeper, Sunday, 30 September 2012 00:40 (thirteen years ago)

sorry, they have connections to Death in June (so Wiki tells me) which is how I got confused

aw I was hoping that would be higher tbh

but 214 is a good number!

I love this fucking record!

alpha flighticles (Drugs A. Money), Sunday, 30 September 2012 00:44 (thirteen years ago)

Is that the best C93 album?

(if I wanted to try to convince myself that they are not complete bollocks)

I only listened to all of Fire of Unknown Origin after nominations closed but I think it's great. I prefer it quite a bit to Cultosaurus Erectus but CE is still good.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Sunday, 30 September 2012 00:46 (thirteen years ago)

yeah I feel the exact opposite, but I grew up with CE. There's so much cool stuff going on in that record.

alpha flighticles (Drugs A. Money), Sunday, 30 September 2012 00:47 (thirteen years ago)

I only listened to it once tbh. I remember the basslines being pretty cool. Fire just has so many classic songs though. "Veterans" is my favourite BOC song and "Burnin for You" is top 10 easily, maybe top 5, despite being a radio staple. "Vengeance" is awesome too.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Sunday, 30 September 2012 00:48 (thirteen years ago)

I normally steer people towards "all the pretty little horses" wrt current 93, but it's kind of hard to pick one because (like nww) they are all over the place album to album

Algerian Goalkeeper, Sunday, 30 September 2012 00:51 (thirteen years ago)

((xp to Sund4r) Veterans, Burnin, and After Dark are p much the only tracks I come back to from FoUO, but I rep for almost every song on CE: Monsters (one of my favorite BOC songs), Hungry Boys (beating QOTSA's Go with the Flow to the motorik-metal punch by at least a couple decades), Deadline (grisly horror story set to soft rock settings, coulda been a stand out on FoUO imo), Black Blade (when I was a kid, I thought this song was a big influence on NIN), Lips of the Hills, Fallen Angel, Divine Wind, etc

I totally think that this one of those AOR/metal albums that deserves to be reclaimed by punk, even though there are some serious chops on display

alpha flighticles (Drugs A. Money), Sunday, 30 September 2012 00:55 (thirteen years ago)

Do punk rock people still have an anti-chops stance?

EveningStar (Sund4r), Sunday, 30 September 2012 00:56 (thirteen years ago)

Are there still punk rock people?

EveningStar (Sund4r), Sunday, 30 September 2012 00:56 (thirteen years ago)

lol good point

alpha flighticles (Drugs A. Money), Sunday, 30 September 2012 01:04 (thirteen years ago)

fuck, this is also great. starts and ends in v. mild fashion, but stuffed between the ambling is five minutes of fried guitar blizz dropping needles-in-reverb runs of ravishing expansion. v. excellent.
