I always thought that the term "math-rock" evolved around Slint and their descendants.

Have no idea what this is, going to give it a listen now.

Never cared for Civ but liked Gorilla Biscuits

Algerian Goalkeeper, Saturday, 29 September 2012 20:04 (thirteen years ago)

Yeah, a great album but I don't think I found room for it.

passive-aggressive display name (aldo), Saturday, 29 September 2012 20:06 (thirteen years ago)

Surprisingly not a very gory band.

Frobisher the (Viceroy), Saturday, 29 September 2012 20:06 (thirteen years ago)

Certainly ahead of its time and highly influential.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Saturday, 29 September 2012 20:07 (thirteen years ago)

So great to see Slovenly in this countdown. Kind of a hard band to describe, but they're pretty much in the same art-rock ballpark as Pere Ubu or Ice Cream For Crow era Beefheart. Some folks get put off by Steve Anderson's quirky singing, but that aside, the way that the two guitars weave and mesh with that rhythm section is just such a deeply joyful thing to behold.

OK this makes me want to check them out.

ha yeah never ever has anything i've heard about Branca or math rock intersected at all

some dude, Saturday, 29 September 2012 20:13 (thirteen years ago)

How many votes were there for that unjustly neglected Mercyful Fate album?

Anyone know of anything before Branca that could be termed "math rock"?

King Crimson and Rush? [ / ducks]

xpost But yeah, I never really thought about Branca as math-y at all. Dude doesn't really deal in stops and starts and rapid shifts in metre and tempo.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Saturday, 29 September 2012 20:14 (thirteen years ago)

xp to Nick: That sounds awesome. I recognize them as an overlooked SST band, but I kind of hate the name. But I love Ice Cream for Crow: after re-listening to it in the last few days I believe I put it in my top 15

alpha flighticles (Drugs A. Money), Saturday, 29 September 2012 20:15 (thirteen years ago)

Well I'm not talking about genre designations I'm just talking about the sound. But I guess he sounds more like, I dunno, Lightening Bolt than he does something like Don Caballero. I'll shut up since I guess I thought stuff like Hella and Marnie Stern was referred to as math rock too but I seem to be way wrong.

they are math-rock viceroy

Algerian Goalkeeper, Saturday, 29 September 2012 20:23 (thirteen years ago)

I voted f/Mean Man's Dream, and it's probably the greatest boring album ever made. Dutch dope fiends start w/stark, three-piece metal and trudge their way to lumbering, monobrow psych using nothing but riffs. can't decide whether it's a high-brow conception of low-brow bludgeon or its opposite. something of a weird, alt. experiment in removing all of the tall-hair-and-leather baggage of metal. not much remains, but A f/effort.

Hellhouse, Saturday, 29 September 2012 20:29 (thirteen years ago)

Anyway, I hope its not too controversial to suggest that Killing Joke is fucking awesome!

I think we've gone beyond obscure cult classics to actual cult classics now.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Saturday, 29 September 2012 20:31 (thirteen years ago)

Oh yeah this was def. on my ballot! Can't believe its not even in the top 100 though.

Frobisher the (Viceroy), Saturday, 29 September 2012 20:31 (thirteen years ago)

I dunno they're not actually discussed much round here. Remember it is an ILM poll.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Saturday, 29 September 2012 20:32 (thirteen years ago)

plus we have about 400 albums who some think should be top 100!

Algerian Goalkeeper, Saturday, 29 September 2012 20:34 (thirteen years ago)

haha very true.

Frobisher the (Viceroy), Saturday, 29 September 2012 20:35 (thirteen years ago)

And some people thought not enough got nominated!

Frobisher the (Viceroy), Saturday, 29 September 2012 20:35 (thirteen years ago)

And I will say it again, albums/tracks that get campaigned for will do better. Some just get forgotten about. It's always better to campaign for stuff.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Saturday, 29 September 2012 20:36 (thirteen years ago)

Anyway, I hope its not too controversial to suggest that Killing Joke is fucking awesome!

no, that Killing Joke rec is fucking great, and a genuine classic. cliched to say it's low, but it seems to have great appeal beyond the usual circle of weirdo listeners (not that I know any of those creeps).

Hellhouse, Saturday, 29 September 2012 20:36 (thirteen years ago)

I have heard a lot of people say its the best KJ. Whilst others go for the other obvious 2.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Saturday, 29 September 2012 20:38 (thirteen years ago)

Discharge used to be my fave from that early 80s UK wave of hardcore-ish anarcho-punk stuff. Not listened to anything by them in a long, long time though.

chewed postcard to robert smith (Mr Andy M), Saturday, 29 September 2012 20:39 (thirteen years ago)

I'm reading a recent interview though and I didn't realize they (KJ) were total conspiracy nutters... talking about fluoridation and tavistock and all that.

haha no, we have 100. that's how that works.

would actually be disappointed if they weren't completely nuts.

Hellhouse, Saturday, 29 September 2012 20:43 (thirteen years ago)

They reject "all forms of Malthusianism" and are ready to wage war against the "Kissinger Associates," so I don't think you'll be disappointed any time soon.

hey okay Savage Republic made it; this album is cool tho I am one who think not enough albums got nominated and wished Tragic Figures was here as well.

alpha flighticles (Drugs A. Money), Saturday, 29 September 2012 20:51 (thirteen years ago)

plus we have about 400 albums who some think should be top 100!

OTM, everyone has a different top 50, so obv every voter feels that their recs should be in the top 100 (and this applies to every rec that received even a single vote).

Hellhouse, Saturday, 29 September 2012 20:51 (thirteen years ago)

there's a difference between "this was in my personal ballot" and "i am disappointed/annoyed this was not voted higher on the list by others"

some dude, Saturday, 29 September 2012 20:52 (thirteen years ago)

After the Quarrel...

Ducking out for a bit, which will conveniently stop me from getting into my conflicted feelings about KJ's distinct creepy nutter vibes.

chewed postcard to robert smith (Mr Andy M), Saturday, 29 September 2012 20:53 (thirteen years ago)

no Age of Quarrel on Spotify, but this is the only track anyone needs to hear:

Cro-Mags - We Gotta Know: http://youtu.be/f7eIQBCii_E

Hellhouse, Saturday, 29 September 2012 20:55 (thirteen years ago)

i think i have the album on mp3. if not i need to fix that.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Saturday, 29 September 2012 20:57 (thirteen years ago)

there's a difference between "this was in my personal ballot" and "i am disappointed/annoyed this was not voted higher on the list by others"

only sometimes true. and it doesn't stop people who voted f/obscure recs that they wholeheartedly love to bits from thinking that the rec should be higher. maybe the left brain is okay w/the low placing, but the music-loving lizard brain wants that fucker in the top 10.

The Atheist albums were on Spotify a few months ago but now seem to be gone.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Saturday, 29 September 2012 21:02 (thirteen years ago)

it wasn't so very long ago that idea of Big Black's Kerosene winning any 80s poll was virtually unthinkable (and the notion was 100% unthinkable in the 80s). so it's occasionally tough to "rationally" gauge where the music "should" place. Keiji Haino placing above Bon Jovi can ignite all sorts of "irrational" hopes and ideas about where certain albums "should" be.

xxp

Hellhouse, Saturday, 29 September 2012 21:10 (thirteen years ago)

big black winning that only happened due to the last couple of ballots iirc.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Saturday, 29 September 2012 21:12 (thirteen years ago)
