'should be glad it just placed' = an odd sentiment in a poll thats running the top 400 out 493 (not a dig). I'm really hoping that that last 93 aren't hiding any crucial gems :\

Well if it had been a top 50 or a top 77 (hoho board injokes)like some people wanted you would not have any of these albums and it would just be a case of what order do the 50 albums we all know place

In My Head my second fave Black Flag rec after Damaged, if only f/title track and Out of this World.

In My Head: http://youtu.be/_31h2YxKEQI
Out of this World: http://youtu.be/kuD6icgNtsE

the entire rec is a front-row seat to the band's road-war fatigue wrestling w/Ginn's refusal to quit. a wired-from-exhaustion buzz dropping euphoria and obsession a hundred miles from hardcore.

Hellhouse, Saturday, 29 September 2012 16:40 (thirteen years ago)

I mean, I'm happy they placed bcz the list was so long--I'm fully in support of there being a top 400--I just thought Misfits were kinda considered sacred cows round here, but yknow votespliting sera sera...

I'm not sure I've read a lot about Misfits here but I suppose the people who are into them didn't vote whilst those into other similar sized bands did vote. It certainly makes a poll unpredictable.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Saturday, 29 September 2012 16:48 (thirteen years ago)

Sund4r if the idea of "ac/dc meets the cars" intrigues you, def check out the first two Kix albums

da croupier, Saturday, 29 September 2012 16:50 (thirteen years ago)

Re: Misfits, I'm with the people way upthread that beyond the box set it's weirdly difficult to get a proper grip on their discography, what with the held-back releases, different versions of same songs, different editions of albums etc. So it's not surprising that there doesn't seem to be a strong consensus choice of theirs for this poll.

I voted for Obituary and King Diamond, both excellent records. Lots more stuff I've never heard on this run, I'll have to do some more investigating.

Arvo Pärt Chimp (Neil S), Saturday, 29 September 2012 16:56 (thirteen years ago)

listening now to Repulsion's Horrified, btw, capital spew sporting riff-action that towers over the hash of bad grind. serenades f/yr. inner window-smasher. recommended.

love Slovenly, but I don't why the fuck I didn't nominate any of their recs. v. weird band that musically makes the most sense to me as a post-no-wave excursion into punk-prog (sort of like Saccharine Trust w/a heavy Ut fixation, and even that's off-base).

early Slovenly tends to be shot through w/far more amphetamine quirk:

Slovenly - Inhale: http://youtu.be/PgZvg8ey1gw
Slovenly - Plug: http://youtu.be/F7sS8N5UVZQ

am v worried that some of my albums didn't make it out now!

so much for The Las Vegas Story; probably no Savage Republic

alpha flighticles (Drugs A. Money), Saturday, 29 September 2012 18:25 (thirteen years ago)

(actually I hadn't heard it in time, but if I had then Savage Republic's first album, Tragic Figures would've totally been nom'd by me and on my ballot. That album is p cool)

alpha flighticles (Drugs A. Money), Saturday, 29 September 2012 18:26 (thirteen years ago)

I'm getting the same feeling about some of my bottom-of-the-list votes. we seem to be past the obscure cult-fave section.

Think that in my initial 'hey, this is a fun racket' reaction I missed just how tight a band they were.
On Prayers On Fire you can here the elements they took from The Pop Group more clearly than on Junkyard or the EPs (def not a criticism).

otm. voted for Prayers on Fire

alpha flighticles (Drugs A. Money), Saturday, 29 September 2012 19:19 (thirteen years ago)

re: Young God EP: I nominated this rec, but didn't vote f/it (too many Swans on my ballot already). Young God is generally considered the companion to the slightly heavier Cop, but all the tracks are swathed in a fog of reverb that adds a hypnotic, psych element to an otherwise mulish slog through misery. almost as much a companion to Drawings of OT with its hallucinatory air of inward collapse. heavy and hazy fun.

Hellhouse, Saturday, 29 September 2012 19:21 (thirteen years ago)

Yeah I voted for Prayers on Fire too. Junkyard is too much -- well, like the title sounds.

Frobisher the (Viceroy), Saturday, 29 September 2012 19:29 (thirteen years ago)

but seriously, Masters of Reality is really great. I didn't give it the #1 vote but I'm not surprised it got one.

Here we go man!!! Anyone know of anything before Branca that could be termed "math rock"?

Frobisher the (Viceroy), Saturday, 29 September 2012 19:39 (thirteen years ago)

Cause AFAIK it started with him and primarily this album.

Frobisher the (Viceroy), Saturday, 29 September 2012 19:39 (thirteen years ago)

Lesson No. 1: title track is great and already placed, so I'll just add that I really love this short-lived period when Branca planted a flag between stripped squall and the fever of grandeur.

Hellhouse, Saturday, 29 September 2012 19:47 (thirteen years ago)

I always thought that the term "math-rock" evolved around Slint and their descendants.

passive-aggressive display name (aldo), Saturday, 29 September 2012 20:06 (thirteen years ago)

Surprisingly not a very gory band.

Frobisher the (Viceroy), Saturday, 29 September 2012 20:06 (thirteen years ago)

Certainly ahead of its time and highly influential.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Saturday, 29 September 2012 20:07 (thirteen years ago)

So great to see Slovenly in this countdown. Kind of a hard band to describe, but they're pretty much in the same art-rock ballpark as Pere Ubu or Ice Cream For Crow era Beefheart. Some folks get put off by Steve Anderson's quirky singing, but that aside, the way that the two guitars weave and mesh with that rhythm section is just such a deeply joyful thing to behold.
