*shakes fist at u*

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 28 September 2012 20:49 (thirteen years ago)

See I kind of get Queensryche as being for prog fans who think Voivod are 'just too out there'.

B-b-but Nothingface was #4 on my ballot.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Friday, 28 September 2012 20:51 (thirteen years ago)

Dio would have made my list had I been able to do 100 entries!

Fastnbulbous, Friday, 28 September 2012 21:01 (thirteen years ago)

See, I kind of think of Iron Maiden as proggy too.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Friday, 28 September 2012 21:03 (thirteen years ago)

long /= prog

space dokken (Edward III), Friday, 28 September 2012 21:11 (thirteen years ago)

I think xhuxk described Maiden as a louder version of Jethro Tull once, which doesn't seem too far off to me. "Hallowed Be Thy Name" has a lot of proggy elements: quasi-classical allusions, acoustic/electric contrasts, a fantastic narrative, tempo changes.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Friday, 28 September 2012 21:13 (thirteen years ago)

maiden wasn't prog until dickinson joined, once you start all that sword n sorcery bullshit it's game over

space dokken (Edward III), Friday, 28 September 2012 21:15 (thirteen years ago)

Pretty much all their popular material was done with Dickinson!

EveningStar (Sund4r), Friday, 28 September 2012 21:16 (thirteen years ago)

popular in whose house not mine

space dokken (Edward III), Friday, 28 September 2012 21:17 (thirteen years ago)

just bc u don't like them doesn't make them prog

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 28 September 2012 21:19 (thirteen years ago)

^ this, the Dianno era is nearly latter-era punk and it's only once he's gone prog weighs in big time.

passive-aggressive display name (aldo), Friday, 28 September 2012 21:19 (thirteen years ago)

okay if this is all just Maiden sucks after the first two albums then that's a totally different conversation to are Maiden prog y/n

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 28 September 2012 21:22 (thirteen years ago)

I do like them! but d'ianno >>>>> dickinson

space dokken (Edward III), Friday, 28 September 2012 21:22 (thirteen years ago)

most popular iron maiden album in my house: killers

space dokken (Edward III), Friday, 28 September 2012 21:23 (thirteen years ago)

but c'mon if you are recording 14 minute songs based on 18th century poems about ghost ships you just might be prog maybe a lil bit

space dokken (Edward III), Friday, 28 September 2012 21:25 (thirteen years ago)

I like Dianno fine for those 2 albums, but creatively they didn't go very far with him. I love those 2 albums but what I love about Maiden in sum total has more to do with Dickinson and Harry and what the band did after Dianno left, than anything that happened before Bruce joined.

They'd never have been able to do anything like Run to The Hills or Aces High or Prisoner with Paul, which is the maiden stuff I really truly love

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 28 September 2012 21:26 (thirteen years ago)

And if you're coming at Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner as a prog song then lol, there's sooooooooo much storybook metal that's long and overwrought that's not prog, it just doesn't make sense to me

unles prog = you just don't like it, in which case fine, lol

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 28 September 2012 21:27 (thirteen years ago)

Maiden's music has more to do with Steve Harris than the singers, and there's plenty of continuity. I hear some prog influences in "Prodigal Son" for example. I don't know about the sorcery part, but there's been plenty of swords and war themes in the first two albums, much like the later ones.

Fastnbulbous, Friday, 28 September 2012 21:37 (thirteen years ago)

Swords and sorcery is just kind of a dismissive catchall though -- Harry's fking bonkers, he pulls from bloody near anything that gets his attention, whether it's pulp thrillers or Hammer Horror movies or tv or mythology, military history or christing Coledrige

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 28 September 2012 21:43 (thirteen years ago)

Well put. Funny that there's a long convo about Maiden when they haven't even made an appearance in the poll yet!

Fastnbulbous, Friday, 28 September 2012 21:48 (thirteen years ago)

just say 'Maiden' and I'm all in, lol

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 28 September 2012 21:50 (thirteen years ago)

But I gave musical reasons why I think they're prog-influenced. It wasn't just about song length. I thought Maiden were Genesis and Tull fans? 2112/Farewell to Kings-era Rush is another reference point that makes some sense to me.

I actually can't remember why I brought this up in the first place though tbh.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Friday, 28 September 2012 22:24 (thirteen years ago)

I think it was because people were hating on Queensryche?
