I was aslepp when it got posted, but I had never realised before what an 80s abortion the cover of Slippery When Wet is. Electric pink border! Sunset shading on the text! Generic bewbs photo!

Mars - 78 is tied at 320 (gotta support some of these basement dwellers).

Aldo presumably that's why the record company changed it to the one we're all familiar with.

Fixed.
(I've never heard it but I always assumed that album came out in 1978.)
― EveningStar (Sund4r), Friday, 28 September 2012 13:11 (thirteen years ago)
I think I got both of these CDs that same year in 1989. All the punk reissues were coming out that I was playing on my radio show, Fester's Bucket O' Nasties. Meanwhile a friend's metal show was turning me on to a bunch of bands including Terrorizer.

not sure if the story's true but supposedly the hot pink boobs cover was the label's original suggestion, bon jovi hated it so much he sprayed water on a garbage bag, wrote the name of the album on it, and took a picture.
― space dokken (Edward III), Friday, 28 September 2012 13:26 (thirteen years ago)
Mars' 78 was released on Lydia Lunch's Widowspeak label in '86.
xp
― Hellhouse, Friday, 28 September 2012 13:29 (thirteen years ago)
well, they came up with the album title at a strip club, JBJ's problem with the cover was the cheesy pink border, probably didn't mind the bewbs

JBJ: feminist crusader
― Arvo Pärt Chimp (Neil S), Friday, 28 September 2012 13:37 (thirteen years ago)
Looks like it got reused on promotional material without any JBJ complaints so pink border seems to be the only issue:

technically it was a reissue of material they released in the 70s, but since the widowspeak release contains a controversial remix by jim thirwell I guess that counts. the original mixes were eventually reissued sometime in the oughties?
― space dokken (Edward III), Friday, 28 September 2012 14:30 (thirteen years ago)
yeah, we had this discussion during the nomination period re: the Avengers and Pagans. if a compilation was released in the eighties, contained out-of-print material, and was considered a definitive rec in and of itself, then it was allowed in the poll (see also: Auto-Da-Fe).
― Hellhouse, Friday, 28 September 2012 14:36 (thirteen years ago)
in retrospect, there's actually a strong case to be made for Black Flag's The First Four Years, even though the material was still available. it's definitely considered a classic.
― Hellhouse, Friday, 28 September 2012 14:40 (thirteen years ago)
true, it was near impossible to hear mars in '86. I remember there being a no new york reish in the late 80s? or am I dreaming
placed 10 so far and I must say this is a fine group of albums

That's the one Killing Joke record that really does it for me. Have a hard job connecting with them otherwise, but that one is great.

afaik No New York has never been reissued in the US. there are Japanese and Russian CDs floating around from the 00's, but I think that's it. v. fucked up.

those are all v. cool records. I'd add the following to make a killer playlist:

378 Voivod - Killing Technology 111 Points, 3 Votessurprised this is so low, thought this was a classic from a generally beloved bunch
374 Psychic TV - A Pagan Day 119 Points, 2 Voteshope we'll still see dreams less sweet, a much better record imo
366 Jon Wayne - Texas Funeral 123 Points, 3 Votesnovelty records suck but I love this stupid thing, this reminds me I should upload my 7 minute remix of the title track to youtube
330 The Comsat Angels - Waiting For A Miracle 167 Points, 4 Voteshave only heard these guys on compilations, dug em but not enough to track down the records, shame they're not on spotify in the US
327 Saccharine Trust - Surviving You, Always 170 Points, 2 Votesmy "discount black flag" dismissal above was a little harsh, but this record has a more straight-ahead rock feel than pagan icons, as musicians they still eat a lot of ppl's lunch but I was hoping for a weirder record from them, and that record is called they became snakes
325 Misfits - Legacy Of Brutality 173 Points, 4 VotesI hate this bastardized remix of tunes that were fine in the first place, fuck danzig and the echo effect he rode in on
323 Radio Birdman - Living Eyes 175 Points, 3 Votesnever heard these guys but curious
314 Halo Of Flies - Singles Going Nowhere 181 Points, 4 Votesjust to expand on a brief comment above, this guys are really fantastic. this collects their first 4 singles (I had the cassette version titled 4 from the bottom), but the best career overview is '91's music for insect minds, a goliath cornucopia of fleet-footed fried-out rock riffage. I characterized them at the time as the sound of "soused going-nowhere manhood", akin to bands like the flesheaters and mule, but affinities with their amphetamine reptile brethren were based more on sensibilities than ability - tom hazelmyer was one of the best guitarists of the era, and his rhythm section's precog-like propensity for following his trail of stinking wah lava is a wonder to behold. similar to how 70s punk bands amped up 50s rock n roll, halo of flies sound like folks who internalized hendrix experience dynamics and then drug them through the dirt. it took me a while to fully appreciate them, as the tightly-compressed sonic forward motion can sound like a big mess at first draught. these guys would have been huge except haze stinks as a singer, and their commitment to lo-fi recording equals paper-thin sound. I guess if you're gonna sample one tune from this, go with "thoughts in a booth".
301 Killing Joke - Night Time 192 Points, 5 VotesI know this is the n00bs choice but I find the sleek vibe here seductive as car leather and a dark country road.

great write-up of halo of flies e3!
never heard that flesh eaters album, but the tracks off that (plus 'we'll never die' iirc) were my favourites on greatest hits destroyed by fire. had some of their later period sst stuff too, but never really got into that

― alpha flighticles (Drugs A. Money), Friday, 28 September 2012 16:44 (thirteen years ago)
once the pop voters left the building, I think that a number of rock records w/pop gloss took a hit (you could even throw Night Time in that category, at least relative to the earlier Killing Joke records). but yeah, the whole thing boggles the 80s section of my brain.

Pretty damn sure those big 90s albums put people off Soul Asylum and they wont even check out the good 80s stuff which is a shame as this is a classic.
well except the 80s stuff also sucks
― set me on fire RAAAAH (DJP), Friday, 28 September 2012 16:54 (thirteen years ago)
lol
there were several iterations of the flesheaters, a minute to pray a second to die featured the best lineup with dave alvin, john doe, dj bonebrake, steve berlin. desjardins' vocals can be an acquired taste but the entire b-side is killer. if you can't get down with "cyrano de berger's back" rock n roll just ain't for you kid. "divine horsemen" is primitive tribal ass-shake taken to epic lengths, and heights.
drugs a money, I can't imagine you not liking halo of flies. "headburn" is prolly their most accomplished recording sound-wise, though "tired & cold" sums up their appeal pretty handily.
― space dokken (Edward III), Friday, 28 September 2012 16:54 (thirteen years ago)
It's amazing that F/i has been putting out all that crazy space-rock psych since the 80s without many of us noticing. I didn't dig into them until last year, so nothing has been ingrained enough to vote for, but glad to see 'em appear. I found my list, looks like Comsat Angels' Sleep No More was my #8.
