sort of? my pre-teen musical evolution was glam->prog->metal, then I hit the punk and weird stuff that dominates my tastes. oddly enough, I have a very distinct memory at age 13 of navigating the snowy sidewalks of red bank NJ to purchase the first album in the poll, defenders of the faith, on its release date. that was the last metal album I remember being OMG super-psyched about. since then I've paid attention to metal with some residual fondness. the metallica/anthrax/megadeth period left me cold, with the blinding exception of reign in blood. definitely dug the spazzed out death metal of the 90s. tho most current metal doesn't do much for me, some of my favorite albums are metal, and there are about 6-8 metal albums on my ballot (depending on how broad yr definition of metal is).

E3: my formative years were all about grunge/ metal, then I went in other directions. I've gone back in the last five years or so. Weird/out-rock including metal of various types has always been a touchstone for me too, though I can't claim the kind of knowledge displayed on this and other threads. This kind of poll allows me to fill in a lot of gaps.

Popping out of lurk-mode to say that calling Saccharine Trust ca. Surviving You Always "discount Black Flag" is well and truly bizarre. The two bands do overlap stylistically in some ways, but in every one of those areas, ST wins. ESPECIALLY when it comes to incorporating out-jazz weirdness into punk rock. I love a lot of Greg Ginn's playing, but he can't compete with Joe Baiza on that front.

Also, that cover of "Peace Frog" is great!

I think/hope that I voted for Out Of Step.
Tracks poll makes me think I should check out the Live Skull and 8 Eyed Spy albums.

I guess the fact that an out of print live album by live skull beat out the pretenders and U2 is some sort of long postponed victory

since most people who moaned that they shouldn't be excluded and created a clusterfuck but then didn't vote when those albums were allowed just proves they were trolling. Kudos however to some dude and the others who did vote and im glad their albums made it. One of the reasons it was a long rollout.

I really, really hope this thread causes people to check out the Comsat Angels. I'm sorry for not having voted; I had the best intentions, but work got insane and some family stuff came up and blah blah. Any poll that starts with Priest is fine by me, though, and man there's a lot of stuff on here to jot down for future used record store trips.

Comsats are seriously one of my very favorite bands of all time and have been for quite some time.

Mik Glaisher is a monster of a drummer and Steve Fellow's guitar playing is about as economical as it gets, and so damn effective.
