f*ck the hate and ban me if you wish, i'm voting for ke$ha ..
i think the double set that we got in the uk (animal and cannibal) was great fun ..
― mark e, Thursday, 27 September 2012 20:27 (thirteen years ago)
I think Ke$ha has proven herself with time. "Blah Blah Blah" was a bad single choice after "Tik Tok", but I think most people came round with "Your Love Is My Drug" or "We R Who We R".
― LeRooLeRoo, Thursday, 27 September 2012 21:03 (thirteen years ago)
heh "Blah Blah Blah" was the only one i remotely enjoyed
― some dude, Thursday, 27 September 2012 21:04 (thirteen years ago)
Lol ok. I thought it was pushing her trashy persona too far and the music was kind of generic.
― LeRooLeRoo, Thursday, 27 September 2012 21:07 (thirteen years ago)
i like trashy.
― mark e, Thursday, 27 September 2012 21:08 (thirteen years ago)
Well bros, since no one has stepped up yet for Katy Perry, and since Norah Jones (despite selling 36 million records worldwide) is off the list...
― canonical casual cordouroy (Eazy), Thursday, 27 September 2012 21:08 (thirteen years ago)
oh, and i guess i like generic.
I like Ke$ha better than f@%&*n Katy Perry.
― LeRooLeRoo, Thursday, 27 September 2012 21:14 (thirteen years ago)
seriously, are there people who don't ?

i'd go beyonce-missy-ciara-rihanna-madonna-alicia-britney-gwen-nicki-kelly-nelly-fergie-p!nk-taylor-xina-katy-mariah-avril-ke$ha-ashanti-j.lo on basis of their hits, put britney and maybe gwen (can't remember where 'cool' peaked or if her moby and eve cameos were this century for that matter) ahead of alicia and move madonna just ahead of missy (total fanboy, no shame) on basis of total work or whatever this century. also, not sure if this has been covered, but is adele not up there by mistake or at this moment stuck at four top ten hits? i'd put her right behind alicia maybe.
― balls, Thursday, 27 September 2012 21:34 (thirteen years ago)
Katy perry, with Kesha second. Gaga a distant third. I never thought born this way was all that great. The rest are pure vomit.
― Mr. Snrub, Thursday, 27 September 2012 22:07 (thirteen years ago)
i have finished my empirical study of my own taste and determined that indeed fergie will be my vote. lady gaga and *gasp* katy perry would have been next in line
― teledyldonix, Friday, 28 September 2012 06:14 (thirteen years ago)
i have major respect for someone who puts out just one solo album that has a pretty great run of singles
― teledyldonix, Friday, 28 September 2012 06:15 (thirteen years ago)
yeah, and the gulf of quality between Fergie solo singles and BEP singles really speaks well of her, i kind of feel like it's a shame she hasn't done another record

What's behind the pure pop boom? It's no coincidence that 2008 marked the arrival of two of the format's reigning stars: Perry and Gaga. Rihanna, meanwhile, continued to solidify her star status as an almost constant chart staple, adding touches of R&B and reggae to her overall pop focus.
is the person who wrote this completely unfamiliar with Rihanna's initial top 10 singles
― set me on fire RAAAAH (DJP), Tuesday, 2 October 2012 17:27 (thirteen years ago)
i think they phrased that poorly and didn't mean that she was 'adding' that stuff to her sound for the first time post-"Umbrella"

This morning was the first time I'd knowingly heard a Katy Perry song. I actually couldn't believe someone with a voice like that would be allowed near a microphone.― You killed my accountant... now YOU must be my accountant (dog latin), Friday, March 25, 2011 1:09 PM Bookmark Suggest Ban Permalinkbelieving it is easier once you've seen her boobage― sarahel, Friday, March 25, 2011 1:11 PM Bookmark Suggest Ban Permalink

if someone had managed to just paint their penis like a microphone to fool her they would've saved us all a lot of trouble
― jaz a make wardance (some dude), Tuesday, 2 October 2012 17:37 (thirteen years ago)
I voted for Avril. Just, you know, before anyone asks who the hell did that. I like the songs she sings on best, I guess. (shrugs)
― how's life, Tuesday, 2 October 2012 17:46 (thirteen years ago)
I take issue with the use of the term "pure pop" in that article.
― gesange der yuengling (crüt), Tuesday, 2 October 2012 17:49 (thirteen years ago)
Like what the hell is "mainstream top 40 radio is playing more pure pop than ever before" even supposed to mean - all the pop music that came before wasn't pure enough? Can pop music only approach purity if it has a four-on-the-floor beat and an anthemic chorus?
― gesange der yuengling (crüt), Tuesday, 2 October 2012 17:52 (thirteen years ago)
it has something to do with "pure shores" and "beautiful stranger" IIRC
― Doctor Casino, Tuesday, 2 October 2012 17:57 (thirteen years ago)
But yeah, I've always struggled with "pure pop" as a useful term within pop music - if it's reigning on the pop charts then can't we safely conclude it has a high percentage of popness to it? I get it more when it's in some other genre and you're making a point that, unexpectedly, it operates according to the currently operant (or, I guess, historically dominant) modes of pop? e.g. if a backpacker rapper made a song that seems to 'feel' and work by devices shared by "Penny Lane," "Kokomo" and "Hot N Cold," then maybe it's not totally stupid to say their approach, under its genre/stylistic surface is "pure pop" but the whole thing just seems like a pointless endeavor and not really descriptive of anything other than what the commenter/reader has in their own head of what "pure pop" sounds like. Because clearly there's a lot of ground in between those three songs I just listed.

I love The Evolution as album even more than 4.

but Beyonce as singles artist is clearly at the peak of her powers, "Run the World" aside.
wow, actually reading that article it is even stupider than I thought:
"While pure pop has comprised more than 60% of all Pop Songs top 10s each year since 2008, the sound encompassed just 41% in 1993, when R&B from the likes of Whitney Houston, Janet Jackson and TLC infused format playlists. "
― Doctor Casino, Tuesday, 2 October 2012 18:25 (thirteen years ago)
R&B is pure pop!
― Lee626, Tuesday, 2 October 2012 18:30 (thirteen years ago)
guys it really isn't complicated
they're just distinguishing pop-as-genre artists (Gaga, Katy, Kelly, Pink) from top 10 acts who might be primarily identified as R&B or rock or country or hip-hop
― jaz a make wardance (some dude), Tuesday, 2 October 2012 18:32 (thirteen years ago)
i mean the article is about the Pop Songs chart, they're talking about popular artists who aren't also successful on, say, the R&B chart like Beyonce, Mariah, etc.
― jaz a make wardance (some dude), Tuesday, 2 October 2012 18:33 (thirteen years ago)

― how's life, Tuesday, 2 October 2012 18:43 (thirteen years ago)
her first album's singles were all more successful on Pop Songs than Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs, aesthetics notwithstanding (xpost)
― jaz a make wardance (some dude), Tuesday, 2 October 2012 18:44 (thirteen years ago)
Gaga, Katy, and Kelly have all had #1 singles on the club/dance charts. Pure pop = disco-pop?
― gesange der yuengling (crüt), Tuesday, 2 October 2012 19:33 (thirteen years ago)
Madonna has had a bazillion club/dance #1s, that chart's makeup is more artists considered 'pop' than any particular strain of dance music
― jaz a make wardance (some dude), Tuesday, 2 October 2012 19:42 (thirteen years ago)
More clubs mostly play top 40 (or dance remixes of top 40) than you'd think.
― Cap'n Hug-a-Thug (The Reverend), Tuesday, 2 October 2012 19:44 (thirteen years ago)
yeah unless someone actually wants to make the argument that there's anywhere near the crossover between the r&b and pop chart as there was eight to ten years ago then anyone agog at this is showing a bizarre unfamiliarity w/ the concepts of 'radio', 'charts', 'billboard', 'r&b', and 'pop'.
― balls, Tuesday, 2 October 2012 20:11 (thirteen years ago)
sorry I'm not going to buy into this "pure pop" thing
