i've heard of that band.
― mark e, Thursday, 27 September 2012 19:56 (thirteen years ago)
that's a great album
― set me on fire RAAAAH (DJP), Thursday, 27 September 2012 19:58 (thirteen years ago)
and after people demanding their inclusion they didn't bother voting.
― Algerian Goalkeeper, Thursday, 27 September 2012 19:59 (thirteen years ago)
or at least "I Will Follow" is a great song, and I don't care about what else is on the album, I love that song so much

Didn't vote for them, but I think I've mentioned before on here that I still have a soft spot for Op Ivy.
― Sorry Ma, Forgot To Bring In The Katz (Mr Andy M), Thursday, 27 September 2012 20:01 (thirteen years ago)
Rudimentary Peni I was never mad on but it may be time to give them another try. Showtime is def on my 'to listen to' list.
― Sorry Ma, Forgot To Bring In The Katz (Mr Andy M), Thursday, 27 September 2012 20:02 (thirteen years ago)
Deathcrush is my first vote to place. I expected that to be top 100. Ah well, it's a great record, "Chainsaw Gutfuck" being a highlight for the track name alone.
― Arvo Pärt Chimp (Neil S), Thursday, 27 September 2012 20:03 (thirteen years ago)
I love Boy, I don't think I voted for it though?
I kinda was on the outs with U2 for a while but recently circled back to the first few albums and I really do love that old shit
― set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 27 September 2012 20:03 (thirteen years ago)
love pagan icons, some of the most intentionally annoying rock music ever recorded
yeah, ST share Ginn's love of hard rock bent into alien shapes, and Jack Brewer is an effective non-singer like Biafra or Mackaye, but also grates f/the same reason. I always thought ST were so much more interesting than the Meat Puppets, but they unfortunately never had the benefit of a celebrity champion.
― Hellhouse, Thursday, 27 September 2012 20:04 (thirteen years ago)
I don't think the Meat Puppets exactly got rich/ got re-evaluated cos Nirvana covered a few of their songs.
― Arvo Pärt Chimp (Neil S), Thursday, 27 September 2012 20:06 (thirteen years ago)
perhaps not rich, but definitely re-evaluated.
― Hellhouse, Thursday, 27 September 2012 20:07 (thirteen years ago)
ONE STEPTWOOO STEPSGETTING CLOSERGETTING CLOSER
true fact: Showtime is one of two albums my father ever made me turn off in years of playing practically everything I ever owned in front of him (the other album was Pornography)
― set me on fire RAAAAH (DJP), Thursday, 27 September 2012 20:08 (thirteen years ago)
if brewer's voice on pagan icons is a picture of the future, imagine a human face being rubbed in shit -- forever. meat puppets were pretty huge on college radio in the 80s, even before cobain's heralding, whereas ST were a footnote from the get-go.
I've actually had 5 of my picks place at this point, but that prolly just means I'm locked out of the top 100.
― space dokken (Edward III), Thursday, 27 September 2012 20:12 (thirteen years ago)
are you much of a metal fan E3?
― Arvo Pärt Chimp (Neil S), Thursday, 27 September 2012 20:13 (thirteen years ago)
Showtime better than Boy lol. I think i cut Showtime near the end.

maybe they're not rich, but whoever has songwriting credits on that nirvana unplugged album has been cashing some checks I can assure you

the Meat Puppets always received a certain amount of critical love, but Cobain's stamp of approval brought them to the attention of a far larger pool of both critics and listeners. he was definitely able to elevate them beyond their station.

true fact: he was more embarrassed for you in the latter case than if you had been enjoying actual pornography
― some dude, Thursday, 27 September 2012 20:18 (thirteen years ago)
I rate pagan icons > surviving you always, but ST fans seem to gravitate towards the latter. sounds a little too much like discount black flag for my taste, and contains an inexplicable cover of "peace frog". pagan icons really doesn't sound like anything or anyone before or since except maybe a dentist's drill, as though a band of pleasure-hating marxist punks from eastern europe got transported to sunny so cal and were left to bake in the sun too long.
― space dokken (Edward III), Thursday, 27 September 2012 20:21 (thirteen years ago)
yeah i don't remember if i've ever seen any exact figures or quotes but i'm quite sure that Curt Kirkwood made better money having 3 songs on a 7x platinum album than the whole MPs discography, even if that's not "rich" per se. also kids definitely started buying their albums because of that, i was one of 'em.

if brewer's voice on pagan icons is a picture of the future, imagine a human face being rubbed in shit -- forever.
due to their weirdness, ST will obviously never be as big as the Meat Puppets, but loud approval from a v. public figure (really, any public figure, even Flava Flav ffs) could only help pull them out of total obscurity.
― Hellhouse, Thursday, 27 September 2012 20:26 (thirteen years ago)
well let's be clear the Meat Puppets were pretty weird
― some dude, Thursday, 27 September 2012 20:30 (thirteen years ago)
How about the biggest name on the internet, Ned Raggett?
― Algerian Goalkeeper, Thursday, 27 September 2012 20:31 (thirteen years ago)
he's pretty weird too

no, it has to be Flava Flav.

also, not a contest! But then I'm not a big Saccharine Trust fan, they've never grabbed me.

the actual punchline is that Pagan Icons was a late cut on my ballot, so, you know, fuck those weirdos and their weirdness.

and that kind of metal fan on ilx is hard to get to vote. cant have non-metallers finding out this music.

sort of? my pre-teen musical evolution was glam->prog->metal, then I hit the punk and weird stuff that dominates my tastes. oddly enough, I have a very distinct memory at age 13 of navigating the snowy sidewalks of red bank NJ to purchase the first album in the poll, defenders of the faith, on its release date. that was the last metal album I remember being OMG super-psyched about. since then I've paid attention to metal with some residual fondness. the metallica/anthrax/megadeth period left me cold, with the blinding exception of reign in blood. definitely dug the spazzed out death metal of the 90s. tho most current metal doesn't do much for me, some of my favorite albums are metal, and there are about 6-8 metal albums on my ballot (depending on how broad yr definition of metal is).
