the trouble is so many of ciara's peaks were just put out as afterthoughts or WENT UNRELEASED because her career has been direly mismanaged for 6 out of 8 years, so these rankings are in terms of uhh "eras" rather than what actually ended up on the album per se

Yeah, that's true, Madonna's catalog was not wonderfully good the past decade.

Ciara feels very 'of her time' to me -- she capitalized on the whole crunk & B thing, managed to make a couple good singles after that trend ran out of steam, and then lacked the talent, creativity or charisma to stay in the game much longer than that.

I think what happened to Ciara, Ahanti, and even J-Lo is that radio just stopped playing them all of a sudden. Only J-Lo managed to make a short comeback because of American Idol.

Also strangely, Britney wasn't getting much radio support before her tabloid and meltdown days. Only "Oops I Did it Again" and "Toxic" made it to the Top 10 (and only to number 9) before she came back with "Gimme More".

That's a pretty good observation. I always figured Britney being in the media so much at the time (even for bad reasons) just made her even more popular and radio finally gave in to the public. Before that her carreer seemed kind of over. (x-post)
