so did I when it was nominated

Algerian Goalkeeper, Thursday, 27 September 2012 01:57 (thirteen years ago)

the further back I went in the Shudder To Think discography the less interesting it was to me, so i stopped at Ten Spot. what's that first one like?

I mean the opening line is "yo girl I love it when you make my asshole bleed" set to the tune of "shakin' all over"

vincent black shadow giallo (Edward III), Thursday, 27 September 2012 02:11 (thirteen years ago)

way behind here, but just listened to Bringing Home the Bait. quickly: droning sheets of dual-guitar racket dragged through the shit and garbage of NYC by drum/bass grind. released in '85, the record takes a heavier hand to Bad Moon Rising's stoner dread and urban-rot romance, delivering slow-burning noir with teeth. psychedelia through a haze of tension. v. low on the list but highly recommended. Dusted trades a hair of grit f/thicker dronescapes and a dark sense of melody that mines the rapture-into-dread of fading LSD. worth a listen:

Loop - Black Sun: This was an EP wasnt it? with the rad-as-fuck nine-minute cover of Pop Group's "Thief of Fire". even if not, here is a link to the cover: http://youtu.be/eHoaPBptKZ0

Here's a pointless fact, I first heard of Loop and F/i in the same place, lumped together with Cul de Sac under the category 'trance-rock' in Simon Reynolds' essay for Can in the big orange SPIN Alternative Music Guide

Caroliner Rainbow Hernia Milk Queen - Rear End Hernia Puppet Show I did not vote for this, because the only Caroliner album I've heard is Rise of the Common Woodpile, which is amazing nutso-ness that I forgot to nominate. I guess they were in the same scene as Thinking Fellers and Trumans Water maybe? Anyhow thanks for the link, cock chirea: you fucking rule! quote from iglu ferrignu that made me check this out:

Caroliner: strike them hard, rear end hernia puppet show, signatures banknotes, sabre waving saracen wall, rise of the common woodpile, cooking stove beast ( no jimi style guitar solos - hillbilly church organ & fiddle with helium voices, monster growls, caveman drums & lobotomised stephen hanley basslines).

it dont take much, apparently.

Gories - House Rockin first vote of mine to make it. Kind of a dry run for the Dirtbombs, but more of a basic three piece then the Dirtbombs' more expansive line-up. Their two albums were hugely repped for by Jack White when he was trying to act like Detroit indie was a 'thing'. Round of apologies if yall already knew that. Mick Collins is the man!

Three Johns - Atom Drum Bop Don't know a ton about this, but one of the Johns is Jon Langford from the Mekons. I seem to remember xhuxk being into this, or at least he was when it came out. I want to give it a listen some time.

Psychic TV - A Pagan Day I must admit that I feel like I need more Psychic TV in my life.

did drake invent yolo (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 27 September 2012 05:03 (thirteen years ago)

i almost ordered rise of the common woodpile from the same dude on discogs - if you wanna vouch for it i might.

Three Johns placement makes me realise I should have nommed 'Death of a European' in the tracks poll.

Girlschool far too low.

I think I voted for Girlschool but maybe not that one?

Colonel Poo, Thursday, 27 September 2012 08:23 (thirteen years ago)

Three Johns was cut quite late for me. I thought I had voted for the Stretchheads, but apparently not.

actually this herculean playlist is gonna be more interesting methinks

did you really piece together a quasi-weird love playlist? I appreciate the effort but I'd be derelict if I didn't point out that weird love wasn't a compilation but the band rerecording a set of their own songs. has anybody ever done this? I mean a whole album's worth.

drugs a money do you fuck w/ scientists? and by the way where is contenderizer?

xxp Gang of Four re-recorded the whole of "Entertainment!", for reasons best known to themselves. Is that the kind of thing you were thinking of?

Arvo Pärt Chimp (Neil S), Thursday, 27 September 2012 13:10 (thirteen years ago)

Squeeze re-recorded their own songs recently, as close to the originals as possible, so they could make more money licensing them for ads/movies than they would off the original masters. i think a few other acts have done that. and lots of bands have done 'self-covers' albums.

the definition of fuckshit bird (some dude), Thursday, 27 September 2012 13:11 (thirteen years ago)

The UK Subs did that about 10 years ago but I think the re-recordings came out on the same label that reissued all their early albums, so I don't think it was to do with licensing issues. Probably just to use up another letter of the alphabet without writing any new songs.

Colonel Poo, Thursday, 27 September 2012 13:13 (thirteen years ago)

yeah, I had already sifted extensively through these songs f/the track nominations, and b/c I liked a fair chunk of them, I decided to assemble an ersatz version of Weird Love. didn't realize that the rec was a re-recording, but w/e, Spotify doesn't have Weird Love. better than nothing, but if you think it's a terrible misrepresentation, I'll remove it.

Hellhouse, Thursday, 27 September 2012 13:25 (thirteen years ago)

nah no big deal, tho the weird love versions are more rocked out than the originals, which are more swampy than hot rod. I'll add it to my youtube list.

ha, I didn't even think of the licensing angle, makes sense. afaik weird love was the only scientists record to get a US release, the rest were imports.

vincent black shadow giallo (Edward III), Thursday, 27 September 2012 13:31 (thirteen years ago)

their follow-up, the human jukebox, went in a birthday party direction, and iirc their aussie label refused to release it

The Scientists had 2 distinct eras*, the early stuff is late 70s punky power pop and isn't much like the 80s stuff.

I love both of them, but ymmv.

* afaik. Maybe they totally changed their sound again in the 90s or something.

Colonel Poo, Thursday, 27 September 2012 13:59 (thirteen years ago)

mine are starting to come in now - DAF and The Ex. That Ex record is really an EP but hey, it was a life changing record.
