wasn't gonna bring it up but might as well say that "Ace of Spades" has been my strongest prediction for #1

Algeddie Trunkeeper (some dude), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 17:03 (thirteen years ago)

if "Kerosene" doesn't actually make this list I will disown all of you

cake-like Lady Gaga (DJP), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 17:04 (thirteen years ago)

never have i been more amused by the presence of the phrase "you go girlfriend" than in this thread

Algeddie Trunkeeper (some dude), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 17:04 (thirteen years ago)

I just wanna say thank you for getting me to listen to "In 'n Out of Grace" again, man it had been too long since I heard that song. It rules so much.

Fun rundown, have listened to a bunch and am having a much better day at work thanks to it.

Never heard that World Domination Enterprises song "Asbestos Lead Asbestos" before. Cool song, and not to add more Sonic Youth to this thread, but it sure shares some strong DNA with "Making The Nature Scene".

grandavis, Wednesday, 26 September 2012 17:05 (thirteen years ago)

I think Kerosene will make it. Also Negative Creep.

gesange der yuengling (crüt), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 17:05 (thirteen years ago)

now now grandavis there's no need to troll me

vincent black shadow giallo (Edward III), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 17:06 (thirteen years ago)

BUTT

billstevejim, Wednesday, 26 September 2012 17:07 (thirteen years ago)

but it sure shares some strong DNA with "Making The Nature Scene". xp

i would bet a vital body organ that it shares zero DNA with making the nature scene.

BUTTHOLES!

stirmonster, Wednesday, 26 September 2012 17:07 (thirteen years ago)

I'm enjoying the rollout a lot but moments like the butthole surfers making it so high (hah!) really makes it even more enjoyable.

A schoolfriend said to me about 20 years ago that in 20 years time I wouldn't be listening to such weird music. He was wrong.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Wednesday, 26 September 2012 17:11 (thirteen years ago)

thx stirmonster, I let DJP pass w/ his bauhaus/SY comparison but somebody's gotta play gandalf to grandavis' balrog here

Thanks sund4r! I know some might be tuning in just now for the results and I urge them to check out the other results and the spotify playlist/youtubes if they have the time.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Wednesday, 26 September 2012 17:13 (thirteen years ago)

I totally stand by my Bauhaus/SY comparison

cake-like Lady Gaga (DJP), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 17:13 (thirteen years ago)

Hah! Sorry EIII, not trying to troll, was an honest response to "Asbestos Lead Asbestos". And I dunno, if you listen to the two songs ...

Gonna bow out and watch the results. Carry on.

grandavis, Wednesday, 26 September 2012 17:13 (thirteen years ago)

The Bauhaus/SY comparison isn't completely insane if you're comparing the earliest work of both bands. Bauhaus had some pretty cool guitar noise, e.g. on "Bela Lugosi's Dead. I've turned Bauhaus fans onto Confusion Is Sex before.

xposts

EveningStar (Sund4r), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 17:14 (thirteen years ago)

I mean, at the same time, I don't think SY were intentionally trying to emulate or "deconstruct" Bauhaus.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 17:14 (thirteen years ago)

either of those 2 queen tracks would be cool

billstevejim, Wednesday, 26 September 2012 17:14 (thirteen years ago)

I didn't say it was intentional!

cake-like Lady Gaga (DJP), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 17:15 (thirteen years ago)

Confusion Is Sex was the first Sonic Youth I really "got" and I'm a huge fan of In The Flat Field so I totally understand the comparison.

gesange der yuengling (crüt), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 17:15 (thirteen years ago)

otoh Bauhaus were already a deconstruction, impossible to further deconstruct imo

gesange der yuengling (crüt), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 17:16 (thirteen years ago)

Algerian Goalkeeper, Wednesday, 26 September 2012 17:17 (thirteen years ago)

If Sonic Youth can be compared to Bauhaus by DJP and Yes by Gary Young then there is no question they belong on this thread

da croupier, Wednesday, 26 September 2012 17:17 (thirteen years ago)

i've always heard some commonality between '80s goth stuff and various SY songs up through Evol, but not in a way where i thought there was any direct influence flowing either way

Algeddie Trunkeeper (some dude), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 17:18 (thirteen years ago)

I didn't think Human Cannonball was going to make it. Yay.

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 17:20 (thirteen years ago)

I dunno, as a guy who spent long periods in the 80s listening to the early work of bauhaus and SY I find the comparison completely insane but maybe I'm too close

vincent black shadow giallo (Edward III), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 17:20 (thirteen years ago)

i still find it weird noone was interested in talking about Albini on the threads. Does most of ILM really still prefer Shellac?

Algerian Goalkeeper, Wednesday, 26 September 2012 17:21 (thirteen years ago)

Great start to the top 20.

yeah I had no idea ILM had such a spacemen 3 hard-on, and those are not standout tracks imo. where are "walking with jesus", "rollercoaster", "take me to the other side" etc.

As bad as this will sound, I'd never really listened to them before I went through the noms list to put together my ballot, but my feeling is that they are the best at what they do.
Obv it helps a lot that I'm into the reference points (Elevators, Stooges) but more than that heavy, tranced-out pysch is something I've always been into as an idea but found a lot of the actual examples not quite satisfying in how they were executed. Spacemen 3 really nailed it.

^Very poorly worded but I'm thinking/typing in a hurry.

not a fan of dokken, but a space jam style #1 placing for "dream warriors" would be about the best thing ever
