_Rudipherous_, Wednesday, 26 September 2012 15:44 (thirteen years ago)

I haven't listened to much Bad Brains, so maybe I'm off here. All I know is I've never felt drawn in by their music, and I remember it as vaguely messy

messy is the most insane description of bad brains I've ever read, they were so in the pocket they put all other hardcore bands to shame

vincent black shadow giallo (Edward III), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 15:44 (thirteen years ago)

also note the 3 way tie @ 77

ITS A SIGN

vincent black shadow giallo (Edward III), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 15:45 (thirteen years ago)

That's like the righteous 666.

x-post:

Okay, I'm going to have to go back after this poll and listen to at least the first couple Bad Brains albums.

_Rudipherous_, Wednesday, 26 September 2012 15:46 (thirteen years ago)

Can a mod please change title to Top 30 & Finishes today ?

Algerian Goalkeeper, Wednesday, 26 September 2012 15:49 (thirteen years ago)

a few relief moments there for songs i was going to go ballistic abt not placing if that were the case

and yeah at points i feel like bad brains might have been the tightest punk band on the planet, the shit they execute in the early years is just insane

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 15:50 (thirteen years ago)

listen to "another damn song" and you will hear what i am saying

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 15:51 (thirteen years ago)

btw I just discovered an early 00s goa trance band named Analog Pussy so I may not be around this thread that much today

29 World Domination Enterprises - Asbestos Lead Asbestos 802 Points, 10 Votes, One #1
http://youtu.be/cTFnnsBzNWU

Algerian Goalkeeper, Wednesday, 26 September 2012 15:53 (thirteen years ago)

didnt vote for it but well worth top 50

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 15:54 (thirteen years ago)

Okay, although to be clearer I meant messy more in terms of how it all sounds, not in terms of musicianship. (Like a lot of Cuban timba sounds messy to me, but the musicianship is super tight. Messy as in: too busy and not quite fitting together to my ears.) That may still be crazy. I think I need to listen to more of them so the next time I will at least not give the wrong explanation of what I don't especially like about them.

_Rudipherous_, Wednesday, 26 September 2012 15:55 (thirteen years ago)

x-posts obviously

_Rudipherous_, Wednesday, 26 September 2012 15:55 (thirteen years ago)

Scanning today's entries on the list - there's quite a few there that I want to do the 'TOO HIGH' thing for, but I'm going to k.i.p and just say that I'm delighted that Where Eagles Dare and Depression made it so high. Gigantic was on my ballad too and it placing in the 30s feels just about right.

This Is Nilbog, We Do What We Like (Mr Andy M), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 15:56 (thirteen years ago)

Also having Crazy Train stuck in my head all day at work was great.

This Is Nilbog, We Do What We Like (Mr Andy M), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 15:56 (thirteen years ago)

if one of your too high moments was the cult song i have a high five hanging right over here for you

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 15:57 (thirteen years ago)

yeah def check out black dots by bad brains, it's stuff from '79 that wasn't released until '96, very stripped down recording so you can really hear what's going on.

and if by messy you meant the songwriting doesn't coalesce into cohesiveness, then the first 5 songs on the s/t should disavow you of that notion

xp

vincent black shadow giallo (Edward III), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 15:58 (thirteen years ago)

I had begun to think this (Asbestos Lead Asbestos) would be even higher. I agonised long and hard about making this my #1 and in the end it only just missed out, but LOVE LOVE LOVE this song. The Loop/World Dom/Godflesh tour really was a thing of wonder.

passive-aggressive display name (aldo), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 15:58 (thirteen years ago)

well actually I will say "Asbestos Lead Asbestos" is great

now back to Analog Pussy

cake-like Lady Gaga (DJP), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 15:59 (thirteen years ago)

unlike last nights sonic youth experience there is no need for anyone to try and get me to understand the appeal of the cult because it is never ever ever going to happen, because that lead singer never shuts up and he is 1000% awful

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 15:59 (thirteen years ago)

btw I just discovered an early 00s goa trance band named Analog Pussy so I may not be around this thread that much today

This is destined to make one of the meta-threads here.

_Rudipherous_, Wednesday, 26 September 2012 16:00 (thirteen years ago)

bad jjj

Algerian Goalkeeper, Wednesday, 26 September 2012 16:00 (thirteen years ago)

they should remix lana del rey

Algerian Goalkeeper, Wednesday, 26 September 2012 16:01 (thirteen years ago)

really everything you actually want to get of The Cult can be satisfied by "Rain", there's no real need to listen to anything else they did aside from maybe poking around Southern Death Cult to satisfy goth curiosity

cake-like Lady Gaga (DJP), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 16:01 (thirteen years ago)

jjj sounds vaguely like The Lex there.

passive-aggressive display name (aldo), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 16:02 (thirteen years ago)

is rain an instrumental?

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 16:02 (thirteen years ago)

I know this observation is so ancient as to be useless but the version of envoye by young gods in the spotify playlist is not any version of the song I've ever heard and is not to be mistaken for the buttshaking awesomeness of what me and I'm sure everybody else voted for

http://youtu.be/vdhHMXTGCC8

vincent black shadow giallo (Edward III), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 16:02 (thirteen years ago)

Actually Dan I kind of disagree. The Death Cult ep is probably all you need, unless you want to listen to SDC.

passive-aggressive display name (aldo), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 16:03 (thirteen years ago)

if one of your too high moments was the cult song i have a high five hanging right over here for you
*furtively completes the high five, goes back to keeping it positive*

Algerian Goalkeeper, Wednesday, 26 September 2012 16:04 (thirteen years ago)

is rain an instrumental?

you should listen to it and find out!

Actually Dan I kind of disagree. The Death Cult ep is probably all you need, unless you want to listen to SDC.

that is certainly a legitimate argument; I think "Rain" is the point where Cult glossiness and SDC/DC gothiness balance each other best and as such scratches all the itches I might have for them in one handy package

cake-like Lady Gaga (DJP), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 16:05 (thirteen years ago)

yes! i knew asbestos had some ILM love but the further this went on the more i thought it might not place.

stirmonster, Wednesday, 26 September 2012 16:05 (thirteen years ago)

this actually reminds me, did we nominate Gene Loves Jezebel for this

cake-like Lady Gaga (DJP), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 16:06 (thirteen years ago)

back in black permanently ruined for me by the fact that a certain former ilxor used to plug $5 into the jukebox at the red dragon and play it like 28 times in a row whenever he got to a certain point of drunk.

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 16:06 (thirteen years ago)

haha that is classic

Algerian Goalkeeper, Wednesday, 26 September 2012 16:07 (thirteen years ago)

that is not a critique of the song really, more an indictment of our lifestyle choices i guess

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 16:07 (thirteen years ago)

awesome, my least favorite spacemen 3 song. and world domination enterprises is some poncey shite.

vincent black shadow giallo (Edward III), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 16:09 (thirteen years ago)

SUGGEST BAN

passive-aggressive display name (aldo), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 16:11 (thirteen years ago)

I am listening to "Jesus Shootin' Heroin" right now and holy shit do I hate The Flaming Lips

3 minutes of meandering whiny sludge leading to the most unconvincing climax ever, then an unconvincing guitar solo followed by more whining

fuck this

cake-like Lady Gaga (DJP), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 16:11 (thirteen years ago)

ok "the rain" is also incredibly terrible. this is not a band for me.

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 16:12 (thirteen years ago)

haha I can't believe you listened to "Rain"

SUCCESS

cake-like Lady Gaga (DJP), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 16:13 (thirteen years ago)

"jesus shooting heroin" is not the track I would've chosen from that album

vincent black shadow giallo (Edward III), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 16:13 (thirteen years ago)

dan do you like the replacements? if so "everythings exploding" might be a way in for the flaming lips.

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 16:14 (thirteen years ago)

I voted for Losing Touch With My Mind but surprised to see any of the Spacemen 3 noms getting this high.

This Is Nilbog, We Do What We Like (Mr Andy M), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 16:15 (thirteen years ago)

I fucking despise The Replacements aside from "Within Your Reach"

cake-like Lady Gaga (DJP), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 16:15 (thirteen years ago)

The Replacements: Classic or Dud?

cake-like Lady Gaga (DJP), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 16:16 (thirteen years ago)

i dig them, but you def have to be choosy because theres a lot of kitchen sink missteps between moments of greatness

xpost haha well then. replacements lost me after tim, so i get it

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 16:17 (thirteen years ago)
