no post-Rock For Light Bad Brains = no "Re-Ignition"

I haven't listened to much Bad Brains, so maybe I'm off here. All I know is I've never felt drawn in by their music, and I remember it as vaguely messy, but listening to "I Against I" just now was okay. I think part of the issue here is that I just don't remember hearing them much at the same to I was listening to Black Flag or related things, so I wasn't exposed to them in a big way at the time I would have been most receptive to their sound. I think there's just a random thing here, that I don't remember knowing anyone who was really into them, but surely they were being played on college radio in Philadelphia in the 80s--but I just don't remember noticing their songs. Ramble ramble ramble.

Re-Ignition one of the greatest riffs of all time.

it's weird when I read about ppl not getting black flag, they were a lingua franca of punk in the 80s. some liked west coast punk, some were into the DC or boston scene, some grew out of or didn't like hardcore anymore, but most folks could find something in black flag's sprawling body of work to like. after not listening to them for years, I went through a late 90s / early 00s phase of returning to their stuff and finding it as bracing as it was back in the day. so, a lot of love and respect for black flag, and not just for the huge role they played in building the infrastructure of the american underground.

vincent black shadow giallo (Edward III), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 15:17 (thirteen years ago)

I definitely get early Bad Brains but kinda wish they'd stayed broken up after Rock For Light.

where's dan?

Algerian Goalkeeper, Wednesday, 26 September 2012 15:22 (thirteen years ago)

I read "Re-Ignition" as "Ignition (Remix)" and wondered what the fuck Bad Brains had to do with R Kelly.

Stevie Chick's book convinced me Greg Ginn and Rollins were dicks when they were in Black Flag. And I ended up thinking less of Chuck for tolerating and, to a degree, feeding it.

Whereas since he left Black Flag, Greg Ginn's been the coolest dude!

Not saying anything about Rollins cos I kinda like him and his goofy ways.

Colonel Poo, Wednesday, 26 September 2012 15:28 (thirteen years ago)

rollins was obv an egomaniacal dick during his black flag tenure, ginn is just an american wacko of the first order, like if black flag ended up selling a billion records he would be the howard hughes of rock

but they were driven and always pushing and imagine this poll w/ no SST

I thought that had a chance of being #1. Prince + ILM poll = #1 placement? I guess not in this case.

"It's So Easy" sounds way better than I remember it sounding. I would have probably voted for this if I had bothered to go back and listen to it.

I haven't listened to much Bad Brains, so maybe I'm off here. All I know is I've never felt drawn in by their music, and I remember it as vaguely messy

messy is the most insane description of bad brains I've ever read, they were so in the pocket they put all other hardcore bands to shame

also note the 3 way tie @ 77

ITS A SIGN

That's like the righteous 666.

Okay, I'm going to have to go back after this poll and listen to at least the first couple Bad Brains albums.

Can a mod please change title to Top 30 & Finishes today ?

Algerian Goalkeeper, Wednesday, 26 September 2012 15:49 (thirteen years ago)

a few relief moments there for songs i was going to go ballistic abt not placing if that were the case

and yeah at points i feel like bad brains might have been the tightest punk band on the planet, the shit they execute in the early years is just insane

Okay, although to be clearer I meant messy more in terms of how it all sounds, not in terms of musicianship. (Like a lot of Cuban timba sounds messy to me, but the musicianship is super tight. Messy as in: too busy and not quite fitting together to my ears.) That may still be crazy. I think I need to listen to more of them so the next time I will at least not give the wrong explanation of what I don't especially like about them.

_Rudipherous_, Wednesday, 26 September 2012 15:55 (thirteen years ago)

x-posts obviously

_Rudipherous_, Wednesday, 26 September 2012 15:55 (thirteen years ago)

Scanning today's entries on the list - there's quite a few there that I want to do the 'TOO HIGH' thing for, but I'm going to k.i.p and just say that I'm delighted that Where Eagles Dare and Depression made it so high. Gigantic was on my ballad too and it placing in the 30s feels just about right.

Also having Crazy Train stuck in my head all day at work was great.

This Is Nilbog, We Do What We Like (Mr Andy M), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 15:56 (thirteen years ago)

if one of your too high moments was the cult song i have a high five hanging right over here for you

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 15:57 (thirteen years ago)

yeah def check out black dots by bad brains, it's stuff from '79 that wasn't released until '96, very stripped down recording so you can really hear what's going on.

and if by messy you meant the songwriting doesn't coalesce into cohesiveness, then the first 5 songs on the s/t should disavow you of that notion

xp

vincent black shadow giallo (Edward III), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 15:58 (thirteen years ago)

I had begun to think this (Asbestos Lead Asbestos) would be even higher. I agonised long and hard about making this my #1 and in the end it only just missed out, but LOVE LOVE LOVE this song. The Loop/World Dom/Godflesh tour really was a thing of wonder.

passive-aggressive display name (aldo), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 15:58 (thirteen years ago)

well actually I will say "Asbestos Lead Asbestos" is great

now back to Analog Pussy

cake-like Lady Gaga (DJP), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 15:59 (thirteen years ago)

unlike last nights sonic youth experience there is no need for anyone to try and get me to understand the appeal of the cult because it is never ever ever going to happen, because that lead singer never shuts up and he is 1000% awful

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 15:59 (thirteen years ago)

btw I just discovered an early 00s goa trance band named Analog Pussy so I may not be around this thread that much today

This is destined to make one of the meta-threads here.

really everything you actually want to get of The Cult can be satisfied by "Rain", there's no real need to listen to anything else they did aside from maybe poking around Southern Death Cult to satisfy goth curiosity

jjj sounds vaguely like The Lex there.

is rain an instrumental?

I know this observation is so ancient as to be useless but the version of envoye by young gods in the spotify playlist is not any version of the song I've ever heard and is not to be mistaken for the buttshaking awesomeness of what me and I'm sure everybody else voted for

Actually Dan I kind of disagree. The Death Cult ep is probably all you need, unless you want to listen to SDC.

you should listen to it and find out!

that is certainly a legitimate argument; I think "Rain" is the point where Cult glossiness and SDC/DC gothiness balance each other best and as such scratches all the itches I might have for them in one handy package
