Genuinely thought this had a shot at making #1.

I would have probably voted for "Debaser" if it had been nominated.

Not even sure about this, listening now. Whatever its virtues may be, they don't seem related to rocking in a heavy way, to my ears.

"Eric's Trip" is another track that just doesn't feel like a standout for me.

"She Sells Sanctuary" was #20 on my list. I'm considering why I think of the Cult as a heavier band than the Pixies. I think I'd be pretty surprised it was #1 on this list, considering how other mainstream hard rock has placed.

I'm considering why I think of the Cult as a heavier band than the Pixies.

So, as far as Love is concerned, they weren't. Later Cult probably is though.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 13:05 (thirteen years ago)

I'm not sure I'll ever get Black Flag.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 13:06 (thirteen years ago)

I get to be jjj about BF.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 13:06 (thirteen years ago)

I'll give "Depression" a listen though.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 13:07 (thirteen years ago)

I think Black Flag is a much better band in theory than they are in practice

very happy about the 2 Janes Addiction tracks, and Sonic Youth's "Pacific Coast Highway."

Who the fuck cares if people don't like Sonic Youth?

"its a case of sonic youth fans voting for tracks from albums"

just speaking for myself, as a fan, it's the 6 or 7 standout tracks on each album that make me rep for the albums.

nicky lo-fi, Wednesday, 26 September 2012 14:07 (thirteen years ago)

Weird. I've never really had much of a sense of what Black Flag is in theory, or what there is to understand about them. They seem pretty immediate and straightforward, though that doesn't mean I think everyone should like them or anything. (I don't have much time for them any more, but I at least played the heck out of Damaged at one point in my life.)

_Rudipherous_, Wednesday, 26 September 2012 14:12 (thirteen years ago)

I mean, they don't seem like one of those bands built around much of an idea.

_Rudipherous_, Wednesday, 26 September 2012 14:13 (thirteen years ago)

it's not like I don't listen to shouty music at all (I mean I voted for "Flashback") but there's something about the Black Flag style of hardcore I find almost impenetrable

but enough of that, let's talk about how "Gigantic" is a fucking awesome song

black flag another situation where I don't think particularly strong tracks were nominated for them

kinda surprised by "gigantic" placing, thought that might be top 10 tho maybe that's because it's the only pixes song I like and y'all luv the pixies

vincent black shadow giallo (Edward III), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 14:47 (thirteen years ago)

you know, a lot of Sonic Youth is meandering nonsense in the best possible way

I wanna say that the more I listen to it, the more I feel there's a deconstructed Bauhaus element to a lot of their 80s stuff

Talk about being late catching up on the playlist. . . I am enjoying Bon Jovi and Rush and even Skid Row a lot more than I'm enjoying any of the more alternative/underground stuff so far. Maybe the mean kids in school were right to make fun of the queer music that queers like me listened to. (Except obviously I still love X and "Mr. Jones" and so on and don't really mean this.)

I feel like the original gets a real charge in the coda, whereas the Nirvana Unplugged version sort of plods anthemically. It's a good kind of plod, but not as eye-openingly psychedelic.

imo.

based only on memories, not actually listening to the songs right now.

yeah the "plateau" is all about the 2 min mark. some of the best meat puppets songs work that way, plunking along pleasantly till something comes along and lifts the top of yr skull off e.g. the gtr solo on "enchanted porkfist".

vincent black shadow giallo (Edward III), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 14:59 (thirteen years ago)

I will come back to that Slayer track once I finish with my Underworld detour

I mean, they don't seem like one of those bands built around much of an idea.

Making punk rock more extreme and dissonant, then fusing this with hard rock/metal, throwing wild chromatic guitar leads over top of it all, bellowing raw expressions of masculine angst and frustration: it all sounds good on paper. Somehow, though, while e.g. Bad Brains can sound dazzling to me, Black Flag nearly always just sounds like a mess. Slayer is actually another example where I can see they were doing some comparable things but everything seems to come together much better to my ears.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 15:02 (thirteen years ago)

The one SY track I voted for hasn't appeared yet and I fully expect it will. Sorry guys. If it's any consolation I didn't vote for any of their albums why because of this happening.

Colonel Poo, Wednesday, 26 September 2012 15:04 (thirteen years ago)

x-post

Your explanations of things on this thread have been pretty good. That's another good breakdown. Black Flag's messiness generally sounds very organized to me, so we're obviously hearing things differently here.

Haha, on the other hand I've never really "gotten" Bad Brains, but I normally keep quiet about it.

_Rudipherous_, Wednesday, 26 September 2012 15:06 (thirteen years ago)

that doesn't compute to me, unless you just hate HR's voice

cake-like Lady Gaga (DJP), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 15:07 (thirteen years ago)

I definitely get early Bad Brains but kinda wish they'd stayed broken up after Rock For Light.

Colonel Poo, Wednesday, 26 September 2012 15:08 (thirteen years ago)

haha listening to "Angel of Death" is making me think "around A Mind..., Ministry turned into a less interesting version of Slayer with a sampler"

Algerian Goalkeeper, Wednesday, 26 September 2012 15:12 (thirteen years ago)

I haven't listened to much Bad Brains, so maybe I'm off here. All I know is I've never felt drawn in by their music, and I remember it as vaguely messy, but listening to "I Against I" just now was okay. I think part of the issue here is that I just don't remember hearing them much at the same to I was listening to Black Flag or related things, so I wasn't exposed to them in a big way at the time I would have been most receptive to their sound. I think there's just a random thing here, that I don't remember knowing anyone who was really into them, but surely they were being played on college radio in Philadelphia in the 80s--but I just don't remember noticing their songs. Ramble ramble ramble.

_Rudipherous_, Wednesday, 26 September 2012 15:13 (thirteen years ago)

Re-Ignition one of the greatest riffs of all time.

it's weird when I read about ppl not getting black flag, they were a lingua franca of punk in the 80s. some liked west coast punk, some were into the DC or boston scene, some grew out of or didn't like hardcore anymore, but most folks could find something in black flag's sprawling body of work to like. after not listening to them for years, I went through a late 90s / early 00s phase of returning to their stuff and finding it as bracing as it was back in the day. so, a lot of love and respect for black flag, and not just for the huge role they played in building the infrastructure of the american underground.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Wednesday, 26 September 2012 15:22 (thirteen years ago)

I read "Re-Ignition" as "Ignition (Remix)" and wondered what the fuck Bad Brains had to do with R Kelly.

Stevie Chick's book convinced me Greg Ginn and Rollins were dicks when they were in Black Flag. And I ended up thinking less of Chuck for tolerating and, to a degree, feeding it.
