Totally Wired! Nice.
That was one of my noms. I was expecting that if I nommed a Fall song ILM would follow suit and we'd have at least 10 Fall songs to choose from. Didn't happen. This was the only Fall song on the noms list. I assumed the voters in this poll weren't particularly excited about them, had I known I would have added How I Wrote 'Elastic Man', Cruiser's Creek, Hit the North or... i dont know, there's so many songs to choose from, a Fall tracks poll should be in line if it isn't already.
― Moka, Wednesday, 26 September 2012 05:47 (thirteen years ago)
I wish I'd nominated ''Couldn't get ahead' as that's ferocious' , thought there'd be more Fall nominated
― fun loving and xtremely tolrant (Billy Dods), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 08:10 (thirteen years ago)
Just to add my tuppence into the SY debate: after BMR (or more specifically once DDN came out) they never did anything for me except in a live setting until we get into the 00s. SYR4 (I think, the critically derided one where they take on modern composition) seemed to form a watershed point and they became more interesting on record again after that.
As far as Foetus live albums are concerned for me Male>Rife.
Also lol at Neil Young making the top 50 in an anti-RS Canon poll.

Keep on rockin in a rolling stone canon free world
― Algerian Goalkeeper, Wednesday, 26 September 2012 10:25 (thirteen years ago)
No big, but "Where Eagles Dare" came out in '79, right?
Love the balance of genres so far.
I do love 'em and stuff, but anyone else not vote for a single SY or Pixies track?
― Pete Scholtes, Wednesday, 26 September 2012 11:12 (thirteen years ago)
xxxp The Classical wasn't nominated? that's perverse
― gospodin simmel, Wednesday, 26 September 2012 11:15 (thirteen years ago)
was going to nominate a few more fall tracks (including the classical) but didn't get round to it.
― woof, Wednesday, 26 September 2012 11:17 (thirteen years ago)
"they (Dino Jr) laid a path forward for sonic youth, who began to ape them on sister and daydream nation."
I don't know, "ape" is pretty strong. Sonic Youth seemed to be making it's own progressions with Bad Moon Rising and then EVOL.

Good song.
― tish tosch (seandalai), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 11:50 (thirteen years ago)
yeah, every "good song" SY made is going to make it
― gospodin simmel, Wednesday, 26 September 2012 11:55 (thirteen years ago)
that is the first of the great lee ranaldo songs iirc?
― A.R.R.Y. Kane (nakhchivan), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 11:57 (thirteen years ago)
xp which I don't mind as much as the Pixies onslaught which is likely to follow. oh, and the funny feeling that Hungry Wolf will be the only X song to place. hope I'm wrong there
― gospodin simmel, Wednesday, 26 September 2012 12:04 (thirteen years ago)
I'm linking the voting thread (with links to the nominations lists) here: 1980'S ROCK POLL ALBUMS/TRACKS VOTING THREAD. (Voting closes September 20) (all welcome to vote inc Lurkers)
I think the only nominated Pixies songs that have not appeared already are "Tame" (the only one I voted for, at #48) and "Tony's Theme". I would have probably voted for "Debaser" if it had been nominated.
― EveningStar (Sund4r), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 12:37 (thirteen years ago)
"gigantic" too.
― stirmonster, Wednesday, 26 September 2012 12:39 (thirteen years ago)
Oh yeah.

― A.R.R.Y. Kane (nakhchivan), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 12:44 (thirteen years ago)
i guess everyone assumed everyone else voted for it
Genuinely thought this had a shot at making #1.

choon
― Arvo Pärt Chimp (Neil S), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 12:50 (thirteen years ago)
I would have probably voted for "Debaser" if it had been nominated.
Not even sure about this, listening now. Whatever its virtues may be, they don't seem related to rocking in a heavy way, to my ears.
"Eric's Trip" is another track that just doesn't feel like a standout for me.
"She Sells Sanctuary" was #20 on my list. I'm considering why I think of the Cult as a heavier band than the Pixies. I think I'd be pretty surprised it was #1 on this list, considering how other mainstream hard rock has placed.
― EveningStar (Sund4r), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 12:54 (thirteen years ago)
38 Black Flag - Depression 722 Points, 11 Votes One #1 http://open.spotify.com/track/2PlwkgeUSTw8V8j76o86oyhttp://youtu.be/cv6OwbBqQEA

I'm considering why I think of the Cult as a heavier band than the Pixies.
So, as far as Love is concerned, they weren't. Later Cult probably is though.
― EveningStar (Sund4r), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 13:05 (thirteen years ago)
I'm not sure I'll ever get Black Flag.
― EveningStar (Sund4r), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 13:06 (thirteen years ago)
I get to be jjj about BF.
I'll give "Depression" a listen though.
― EveningStar (Sund4r), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 13:07 (thirteen years ago)
I think Black Flag is a much better band in theory than they are in practice

very happy about the 2 Janes Addiction tracks, and Sonic Youth's "Pacific Coast Highway."
Who the fuck cares if people don't like Sonic Youth?
"its a case of sonic youth fans voting for tracks from albums"
just speaking for myself, as a fan, it's the 6 or 7 standout tracks on each album that make me rep for the albums.
― nicky lo-fi, Wednesday, 26 September 2012 14:07 (thirteen years ago)
Weird. I've never really had much of a sense of what Black Flag is in theory, or what there is to understand about them. They seem pretty immediate and straightforward, though that doesn't mean I think everyone should like them or anything. (I don't have much time for them any more, but I at least played the heck out of Damaged at one point in my life.)
― _Rudipherous_, Wednesday, 26 September 2012 14:12 (thirteen years ago)
I mean, they don't seem like one of those bands built around much of an idea.
― _Rudipherous_, Wednesday, 26 September 2012 14:13 (thirteen years ago)
it's not like I don't listen to shouty music at all (I mean I voted for "Flashback") but there's something about the Black Flag style of hardcore I find almost impenetrable
but enough of that, let's talk about how "Gigantic" is a fucking awesome song

― _Rudipherous_, Wednesday, 26 September 2012 14:44 (thirteen years ago)
lol
― Algerian Goalkeeper, Wednesday, 26 September 2012 14:46 (thirteen years ago)
If any you punks voted a SY track as your number one, so help me...
― Oneohchex Point Charlie (Spectrist), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 14:46 (thirteen years ago)
... I just hope it's the same one I voted for
black flag another situation where I don't think particularly strong tracks were nominated for them
kinda surprised by "gigantic" placing, thought that might be top 10 tho maybe that's because it's the only pixes song I like and y'all luv the pixies
― vincent black shadow giallo (Edward III), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 14:47 (thirteen years ago)
you know, a lot of Sonic Youth is meandering nonsense in the best possible way
I wanna say that the more I listen to it, the more I feel there's a deconstructed Bauhaus element to a lot of their 80s stuff

Talk about being late catching up on the playlist. . . I am enjoying Bon Jovi and Rush and even Skid Row a lot more than I'm enjoying any of the more alternative/underground stuff so far. Maybe the mean kids in school were right to make fun of the queer music that queers like me listened to. (Except obviously I still love X and "Mr. Jones" and so on and don't really mean this.)
