"halloween" is one of my fave SY tracks, at their otherworldly best before they started trying to be dinosaur lol. I figured you P4K nerds would be all over that shit so I spent my time nomming stuff like drunks with guns and chain gang.

vincent black shadow giallo (Edward III), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 04:34 (thirteen years ago)

You're not calling me a P4K nerd, are you?:P

EveningStar (Sund4r), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 04:34 (thirteen years ago)

I need to pull out my BMR CD.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 04:35 (thirteen years ago)

I wouldn't necessarily say that they ever had really great voices.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 04:36 (thirteen years ago)

Oh, "Halloween"! I love this song, actually. I thought "Flower" was this song tbh. "Flower" was the one that goes "USE THE POWER OF MAN! SUPPORT THE POWER OF WOMEN!" then? That's totally crappier.

jjj: You might like "Protect Me You" too?

EveningStar (Sund4r), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 04:38 (thirteen years ago)

well shit i am def not anyone that should be looking for great voices given my tastes but there is something ultra grating abt the thurston vox to me? like maybe i blame him for that whole lazy i dont give a fuck abt/cant be bothered singing thing in some ways xpost

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 04:39 (thirteen years ago)

ok kind of digging protect me you

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 04:40 (thirteen years ago)

Confusion Is Sex/Kill Yr Idols (1 CD) is probably closest to what you want.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 04:41 (thirteen years ago)

Man E3 you're the one who got me to listen to Halloween and now its one of my favorites

jjj - try listening to Cross the Breeze which is my fave 80s SY track; its on Daydream Nation. Or maybe some 90s stuff like Dirty?

did drake invent yolo (Drugs A. Money), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 04:43 (thirteen years ago)

ok listening to kill yr idols and i am totally down with this vocal thing he is doing - is this more common on the early stuff? i could be down with this band when they arent doing the mumble into the microphone thing i think. yeah ok actually i really really dig this song, was it nommmed?

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 04:44 (thirteen years ago)

funny you would mention the 90s stuff because i have always had a weird soft spot for bull in the heather

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 04:45 (thirteen years ago)

NO IT WAS NOT NOMMED I'M NOT MAD ABOUT IT OR ANYTHING

vincent black shadow giallo (Edward III), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 04:46 (thirteen years ago)

listening to cross the breeze at the moment and this is pretty good, worried abt what might happen if vocals happen tho

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 04:46 (thirteen years ago)

whoops there they are. ehhhh

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 04:47 (thirteen years ago)

yeah, I couldn't imagine you not liking early SY stuff. just listen to confusion is sex/kill yr idols, iow sund4r otm.

vincent black shadow giallo (Edward III), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 04:47 (thirteen years ago)

thurston started trying to sing around bad moon rising, so avoid everything after that

man listen to "inhuman" and "the world looks red" stat

vincent black shadow giallo (Edward III), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 04:48 (thirteen years ago)

ok i like everything abt (ok 80% there are some jammy/noodly things that happen in the middle that dont work for me) cross the breeze OTHER than the vocals.

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 04:50 (thirteen years ago)

that friends is how not to construct a sentence btw

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 04:51 (thirteen years ago)

btw here's an awesome clip of SY doing "kill yr idols" in '85, they were something else back when they were something else

http://youtu.be/vK-nywzO7gE

vincent black shadow giallo (Edward III), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 04:51 (thirteen years ago)

man listen to "inhuman" and "the world looks red" stat

This goes for the rest of the planet, btw

Oneohchex Point Charlie (Spectrist), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 04:53 (thirteen years ago)

i dont feel like thurston is trying to sing tho in what i have heard, its like he is actively disinterested in singing - like i get what you are saying wrt some more tonal stuff going on but man he sounds like he is affecting bored, which makes me way way more bored

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 04:53 (thirteen years ago)

ha inhuman scratches my helios creed itch. thats good btw!

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 04:54 (thirteen years ago)

I don't mind bored thurston but there is something to be said for being-boiled-in-oil thurston

vincent black shadow giallo (Edward III), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 04:56 (thirteen years ago)

if I get jjjusten to like SY I might just call it a night, this is a major achievement

vincent black shadow giallo (Edward III), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 04:57 (thirteen years ago)

It is kind of funny that a band that started out wanting to synthesize Throbbing Gristle and Black Flag went in a more slacker-ish pop-rock direction.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 04:57 (thirteen years ago)

If all bands aspired for Confusion is Sex pummel and texture I swear our lives would be the better for it

Oneohchex Point Charlie (Spectrist), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 04:59 (thirteen years ago)

world looks red has an ok shouty fIRE eNGINES thing going on - thats not right at all, but its the first thing that came to mind.

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 04:59 (thirteen years ago)

i would do a quid pro quo thing but the only thing i have to offer is for swans peeps that dont get the foetus deal to listen to the live album rife

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 05:01 (thirteen years ago)

which is holy crap available on spotify i guess?

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 05:02 (thirteen years ago)

album credits speak for themselves:

J. G. Thirlwell (as Clint Ruin) - vocals
Algis Kizys - Bass
Norman Westberg - Guitar
Ted Parsons - drums
Raymond Watts (as Ray Scaballero or Raymondo Watts) - Keyboards and guitar

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 05:03 (thirteen years ago)

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 05:04 (thirteen years ago)

vincent black shadow giallo (Edward III), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 05:07 (thirteen years ago)

― EveningStar (Sund4r), Wednesday, September 26, 2012 12:57 AM (10 minutes ago)

well I think we've already established why because dinosaur

vincent black shadow giallo (Edward III), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 05:09 (thirteen years ago)

it's an exaggeration to say nail changed my life when it came out but it sure felt like it

vincent black shadow giallo (Edward III), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 05:10 (thirteen years ago)

i am one of the dudes that is way more into rife than male. that is not to diminish your fucking awesome show btw.

xpost haha i will say that actually, i bought it on cassette used and never looked back. its my favorite album of all time actually.

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 05:11 (thirteen years ago)

super actually, too many actuallys to count

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 05:11 (thirteen years ago)

some links to rife versions of poll winners:

english faggot http://open.spotify.com/track/2xTNh7Afutp2jE9wK6xvV0
clothes hoist http://open.spotify.com/track/4oYoPnnK4St99G1C2ddlNy

those are tamer than some of the other tracks, fin is a real cuddler. private war/anything is long, but worth it.

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 05:15 (thirteen years ago)

note: might be slightly more aggro than studio, altho studio is pretty fucking aggro tbh

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 05:15 (thirteen years ago)

if i hadnt been worried abt foetus voter dilution i would have def nommed some stuff from ache. and maybe deaf, altho it doesnt "rock", it fucking rocks.

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 05:19 (thirteen years ago)

oh man I could fill a thread with my thoughts on foetus but I will say hole/nail are all time classics yet I kinda fell out of love with him after that

also mad that "wash it all off" was not nommed in tracks, the 12" version of that, the chorus just sounded so murderous when it kicked in

vincent black shadow giallo (Edward III), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 05:22 (thirteen years ago)

ok I'm gonna go watch oslo, august 31st now bye all and by all I mean jjjusten

vincent black shadow giallo (Edward III), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 05:25 (thirteen years ago)

oh fuck why did i nom no wiseblood fuuuuuck

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 05:29 (thirteen years ago)

Totally Wired! Nice.

That was one of my noms. I was expecting that if I nommed a Fall song ILM would follow suit and we'd have at least 10 Fall songs to choose from. Didn't happen. This was the only Fall song on the noms list. I assumed the voters in this poll weren't particularly excited about them, had I known I would have added How I Wrote 'Elastic Man', Cruiser's Creek, Hit the North or... i dont know, there's so many songs to choose from, a Fall tracks poll should be in line if it isn't already.

Moka, Wednesday, 26 September 2012 05:47 (thirteen years ago)

I wish I'd nominated ''Couldn't get ahead' as that's ferocious' , thought there'd be more Fall nominated

fun loving and xtremely tolrant (Billy Dods), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 08:10 (thirteen years ago)

Just to add my tuppence into the SY debate: after BMR (or more specifically once DDN came out) they never did anything for me except in a live setting until we get into the 00s. SYR4 (I think, the critically derided one where they take on modern composition) seemed to form a watershed point and they became more interesting on record again after that.

As far as Foetus live albums are concerned for me Male>Rife.

Also lol at Neil Young making the top 50 in an anti-RS Canon poll.

passive-aggressive display name (aldo), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 09:02 (thirteen years ago)

Keep on rockin in a rolling stone canon free world

Algerian Goalkeeper, Wednesday, 26 September 2012 10:25 (thirteen years ago)

No big, but "Where Eagles Dare" came out in '79, right?

Love the balance of genres so far.

I do love 'em and stuff, but anyone else not vote for a single SY or Pixies track?

Pete Scholtes, Wednesday, 26 September 2012 11:12 (thirteen years ago)

xxxp The Classical wasn't nominated? that's perverse

gospodin simmel, Wednesday, 26 September 2012 11:15 (thirteen years ago)

was going to nominate a few more fall tracks (including the classical) but didn't get round to it.

woof, Wednesday, 26 September 2012 11:17 (thirteen years ago)

"they (Dino Jr) laid a path forward for sonic youth, who began to ape them on sister and daydream nation."

I don't know, "ape" is pretty strong. Sonic Youth seemed to be making it's own progressions with Bad Moon Rising and then EVOL.
