It's a great song. I have no complaints.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Tuesday, 25 September 2012 23:06 (thirteen years ago)

didn't vote in this cuz i didn't have time and it was alot to digest and tbh i was skeptical of the parameters and definition of terms so to speak but loving the results and thanking you ag for making it top 250. think i would've voted 'youth of america' #1 fwiw.

I haven't even checked which of mine placed. I can only remember a couple of songs I voted for.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Tuesday, 25 September 2012 23:22 (thirteen years ago)

Bowing out for tonight, but have faint hopes that Pay To Cum and/or Holiday In Cambodia might place in the next few.

tough to forget when I spent so much fucking time fiddling w/the order (which in many cases was wholly irrelevant 'cause they didn't have a shot).

I forget if stirmonster voted for this or not..

Algerian Goalkeeper, Tuesday, 25 September 2012 23:39 (thirteen years ago)

death to our friends is a fine album track but is pushing it a tad to be the 51st best track of the decade.

I think it's among the best things they did. I see it as the culmination of their Branca-influenced work, where they are still doing something clearly different with what they took. It's really well-constructed.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Tuesday, 25 September 2012 23:40 (thirteen years ago)

SY is my favorite band of all time but i don't really know where they fit in this poll or why they're here, didn't put much on my ballot

This surprises me. Why would they not fit in? They've probably played with or have some ties to 30% of the bands here. Sister and Daydream Nation especially are clearly hard rock albums imo. It's not like SY was some chamber ensemble.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Tuesday, 25 September 2012 23:47 (thirteen years ago)

Why would they not fit in?

(especially considering some of the other things on this list)

EveningStar (Sund4r), Tuesday, 25 September 2012 23:48 (thirteen years ago)

looking back at the nominations, there were surprisingly few from EVOL. i like death to our friends but to my ears (and i'm a big branca fan) it's not thee choice moment from that record. xp

stirmonster, Tuesday, 25 September 2012 23:48 (thirteen years ago)

What would you pick from Evol, stirmonster?

EveningStar (Sund4r), Tuesday, 25 September 2012 23:51 (thirteen years ago)

i can think of a couple of obvious ones

Algerian Goalkeeper, Tuesday, 25 September 2012 23:51 (thirteen years ago)

I like the whole album. Just asking what stirmonster considers the standout tracks.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Tuesday, 25 September 2012 23:53 (thirteen years ago)

Also, while I do think SY belong in (and in some ways epitomize the aesthetic of) this poll, Evol is one of their least rocking albums so I didn't nominate much from it. I'm guessing other people might have felt the same way.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Tuesday, 25 September 2012 23:54 (thirteen years ago)

off the top of my head shadow of a doubt, marilyn moore and expressway. but, i love the whole album and it's probably my 2nd favourite of theirs. xp

stirmonster, Tuesday, 25 September 2012 23:54 (thirteen years ago)

old biz f/Sund4r:

I don't think this is true: Journey and Bon Jovi were about as far from the RS canon in the 80s as possible (certainly more so than Husker Du or the Replacements). Iirc, RS's 'end of the 90s' list included an 'alternative' section with hardly any albums on independent labels and a 'rock' section dominated by rootsy classic rock warhorses like the Stones or Van Morrison.

I don't think we disagree. I guess I'm referring to the "classic" (boomer-originated) RS sensibility re: rock. as an angry teen listening to SY and Big Black in the 80s, I recall leafing through their doorstop tomes in bookstores a number of times, and my (admittedly subjective and time-warped) impression is that RS used the term "rock" almost the way "pop" is used today, which is to say as a larger, umbrella term under which other genres could be regarded. the editors of these bloated texts seemed to associate funk and hip-hop and R&B loosely but regularly with "rock" in a very casual manner while simultaneously ignoring vast swathes of metal and underground rock. so, iirc, RS was for years content to expand their domain of "music that rocks" (ie: music that owes some allegiance to rock), but within the context of actual rock music per se they were wholly middlebrow and outright refused for a very long time to deal w/a huge amount of what they considered “obscure” or “genre” music. RS was ultimately forced to evolve - by U2 and REM and Metallica and Nirvana and many other bands - and they gradually modified their coverage and their lists and canons. But if this poll were taking place in the 80s, before RS began changing their v. condescending stance towards quite a bit of metal and underground rock, w/a few obvious classic-rock exceptions it really would be very close to an anti-RS endeavor.

Hellhouse, Tuesday, 25 September 2012 23:56 (thirteen years ago)

sorry f/the v. late post. just wanted to address yr. point.

Hellhouse, Tuesday, 25 September 2012 23:57 (thirteen years ago)

Yeah, "Shadow of a Doubt" is great. I actually feel like "Expressway" goes on a bit on record but I like most of it. "Secret Girl" is one of my favourites that gets much less press than some of the others.

yes, "secret girl" is great too; one of the kim gordon vox greats. i always want to hear "shaking hell' after i've listened to it. xp

stirmonster, Wednesday, 26 September 2012 00:02 (thirteen years ago)

Ah, OK, I think we're actually on pretty much the same page, Hellhouse. I would personally tend not to oppose including funk, hip-hop, and some R&B (as well as plenty of country) as "rock", actually, considering how the term was originally used in the 60s. The Carducci approach to defining "rock" actually seems pretty rooted in a 70s conception of hard rock. This is not too far from how many people use the term now so fair do's.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 00:02 (thirteen years ago)
