Not that different in concept from Husker Du, actually.

but more Neil Young-ish

yeah Huskers were The Who.

dinousaur jr were never anything like my bloody valentine

― A.R.R.Y. Kane (nakhchivan), Tuesday, September 25, 2012 3:44 PM (14 minutes ago)

other way around really. dinosaur had a huge impact on the underground '85 - '87, hitching the whiny melodicism of the cure to the shambolic guitar splatter of neil young w/ crazy horse with a louder-than-thou live approach. they laid a path forward for sonic youth, who began to ape them on sister and daydream nation.

and when I heard isn't anything, it was pretty clear this new, improved MBV would not have existed without dinosaur and SY as precursors. the blurry fuzz of "feed me with your kiss" is not that far removed from what's on you're living all over me, even down to shields/mascis' narcoleptic personas. and it was such a common observation in the press that shields was a bit fed up with the comparison when I interviewed him in '89.

vincent black shadow giallo (Edward III), Tuesday, 25 September 2012 20:18 (thirteen years ago)

he was probably fed up with the comparison because he was ripping off bands that weren't dinosaur jr

A.R.R.Y. Kane (nakhchivan), Tuesday, 25 September 2012 20:21 (thirteen years ago)

shields/mascis' narcoleptic personas

the noisy overcranked feedback is shared between but ithink this is a big difference, mascis = stoned, genial, proto-slacker drawl, shields = dull, blissed out, exhausted lament

narcissism of small differences

at the time it was pretty clear whose dog food shields was eating

xxp

vincent black shadow giallo (Edward III), Tuesday, 25 September 2012 20:27 (thirteen years ago)

dude ilx with narcissism of small differences excised would fit on a floppy disk uncompressed

A.R.R.Y. Kane (nakhchivan), Tuesday, 25 September 2012 20:28 (thirteen years ago)

didnt shields produce The Fog?

nostormo, Tuesday, 25 September 2012 20:28 (thirteen years ago)

i think there is a thread where jjj and lj try and persuade me of the glories of mike CRAZYZANYWHAHEWHHH patton and i remain resolute, but i will play that youtube link after i have finished listening to lindstrom

are you sure? very likely on daydream nation but i don't really hear it and would never have thought it of sister.

"they laid a path forward for sonic youth"

and half of the grunge bands

nostormo, Tuesday, 25 September 2012 20:30 (thirteen years ago)

i defer to those who were there at the time, but i kinda imagine sonic youth were au fait with 'shambolic guitar splatter' rather before they had heard the outcome of dinosaur jr listening to neil young's back catalogue

A.R.R.Y. Kane (nakhchivan), Tuesday, 25 September 2012 20:32 (thirteen years ago)

xpost wahoo!

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 25 September 2012 20:32 (thirteen years ago)

perhaps it is just terrible sound quality but I feel like Dino Jr is really intent on hiding the bass while Husker and MBV do a lot to isolate it and bring it to the forefront

also the drums on Husker/MBV sound much, much crisper

in summation, "Ocean Size" pwns

cake-like Lady Gaga (DJP), Tuesday, 25 September 2012 20:33 (thirteen years ago)

Ranking-wise this might be one of the weirdest but awesome polls I've seen in here. Happy to see the Wipers and Einsturzende Neubauten in the top 100 so far.

Moka, Tuesday, 25 September 2012 20:33 (thirteen years ago)

all of Nothing's Shocking is great but Ocean Size is kickass

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 25 September 2012 20:34 (thirteen years ago)

yeah ok maybe not sister

thought there was some proto-dinosaur stuff on there but looking at the track list, no

xp to stirmonster

vincent black shadow giallo (Edward III), Tuesday, 25 September 2012 20:34 (thirteen years ago)

and that possibly explains why i jumped off at daydream nation.

i guess u could say dino jr's late 80s albums legitimized what sonic youth tried to do on goo + dirty

A.R.R.Y. Kane (nakhchivan), Tuesday, 25 September 2012 20:36 (thirteen years ago)

Hope any Crash Course in Science song and Bauhaus - Third Uncle make it.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Tuesday, 25 September 2012 20:38 (thirteen years ago)

(or really I guess it's more "remember how awesome Jane's were if you never really listened to the lyrics to 'Whores'?")

cake-like Lady Gaga (DJP), Tuesday, 25 September 2012 20:39 (thirteen years ago)

"Mountain Song" is gonna place super high

cake-like Lady Gaga (DJP), Tuesday, 25 September 2012 20:39 (thirteen years ago)

i don't like what jane's addiction represent or whatever, but i defy you not to like about half a dozen astonishingly good tracks they recorded

A.R.R.Y. Kane (nakhchivan), Tuesday, 25 September 2012 20:39 (thirteen years ago)

if you are listening to the lyrics of jane's addiction you are misusing your time

re Jane's lyrics - Perry's pretty much certifiably nuts, but he used to sing like a motherfucker so sometimes it's okay to make an exception.

and Eric Avery is probably my top 5 alltime favorite bass players

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 25 September 2012 20:42 (thirteen years ago)

and next to Dave's solo efforts, Perry's lyrics read like fricking Hemingway

"but i defy you not to like about half a dozen astonishingly good tracks they recorded"

nostormo, Tuesday, 25 September 2012 20:44 (thirteen years ago)

I like a lot of Jane's lyrics, he wrote well about families imho
