ike, you look at how a song like "(Everyday Is) Halloween" is structured and then compare it to "So What", which is two minutes longer and has fewer musical ideas in it, and you really start seeing how Ministry really just turned into a vehicle for a drugged-up Jourgenson to shout at a microphone more than a band making music

i actually pretty much agree with you and i think "mind.." is an extremely so-so album but i think i probably have a penchant for "so what" from when i would mix it into banging techno tracks at extremely high volumes and watching people on ecstasy have an instant comedown.

I see that track as hardcore punk warped into damaged noise rock. She Says soaks the listener in bass/drum pounding, but the guitar and vocals curdle w/unhinged, bad-acid vibes, delivering a v. choice one-two punch.

I'm kinda wondering what's going on with the poll. its gone kinda strange and ILM.

one of my favorite things about '80s rock that i tried to represent on my ballot was stuff like "Seperate Ways" and "Rainbow In The Dark" that had really prominent synth lines but still felt like pretty muscular guitar rock songs

i think what the top of the poll looks like is wholly dependant on how many songs were nominated from a given act and how strong the consensus is around one or two of them. it's all kind of a random crapshoot given the format.

My takeaway from the whole thing about the NWA tune is that votes for hip-hop wouldn't be counted, but it seems now this was a misinterpretation. Tbh even if I'd thought they would be counted I probably wouldn't have gone with the 2 Run-DMC tracks, they're good but not great imo.

I might have considered She Watched Channel Zero for my ballot though (and yeah I know it samples Slayer...).

I did actually buy a Husker Du album: Candy Apple Grey. Never played it much, though; I bought the debut from Mantronix on the same day, and that kinda won. Fell hard for the first two Sugar albums, but that was still six years down the line.
