Arvo Pärt Chimp (Neil S), Monday, 24 September 2012 20:25 (thirteen years ago)

it's sort of sad but it is a personal point of pride that I identified how horribly Ministry was starting to suck and jumped off the bandwagon before they could Filth Pig me

Arvo Pärt Chimp (Neil S), Monday, 24 September 2012 20:29 (thirteen years ago)

Surprised Dan doesn't like So What, if I'm honest.

passive-aggressive display name (aldo), Monday, 24 September 2012 20:37 (thirteen years ago)

Ahhh nice, was starting to suspect no Misfits tunes would make it. Astro Zombies wasn't one of the ones I voted for (still great though).

Neckbeard's Castle (Mr Andy M), Monday, 24 September 2012 20:39 (thirteen years ago)

They were obv such a corny band, but they really did have great vocal melodies.

Neckbeard's Castle (Mr Andy M), Monday, 24 September 2012 20:39 (thirteen years ago)

this Dio track is great!

Arvo Pärt Chimp (Neil S), Monday, 24 September 2012 20:40 (thirteen years ago)

Is that Dio tied with something? We're missing a #138.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Monday, 24 September 2012 20:40 (thirteen years ago)

Also, whoa, jjj hates him some Sonic Youth.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Monday, 24 September 2012 20:40 (thirteen years ago)

Most of the Mind songs suffer from the same problem, which is that there is enough musical material to sustain the song for 2 - 3 minutes, but the songs go on for 6 - 8 minutes; I vividly remember my first listenthrough thinking that most of the songs started out great but got really REALLY old by the time they hit the three minute mark and "Burning Inside" was the only one that managed to sustain energy and interest over the course of the whole song (possibly because it is one of the few songs to make use of consistent rhythmic syncopation on the album).

It's the same problem that a lot of terrible acid records have, where the repetition does not build anywhere and basically you just keep hearing the same musical idea over and over and over with little to no development or variation, leaving this static pile that really is a textbook exercise in sound and fury signifying nothing.

cake-like Lady Gaga (DJP), Monday, 24 September 2012 20:43 (thirteen years ago)

I was a huge fan of the first dinosaur rec for its ghostly melancholy + rawness, waited eagerly for the follow-up and when it came out it sounded like some well-formed pop album to me. so I was that guy walking around saying "the first album was better". prolly wasn't until '92 that I finally came around to it.

incidentally the other night somebody said to me "I like you, ed" and I involuntarily recited the opening to "clothes hoist"

vincent black shadow giallo (Edward III), Monday, 24 September 2012 20:44 (thirteen years ago)

yeah its a tie with This but didn't want 2 of metals greatest vocalists to overshadow one another.

137 Candlemass - Mirror Mirror 335 Points, 6 Votes
http://open.spotify.com/track/2riv9QkQLgXyr0a7RWohcF
http://youtu.be/XRHEnREuJZQ

This track is fucking amazing.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 24 September 2012 20:44 (thirteen years ago)

THAT RIFF! THAT VOICE!

Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 24 September 2012 20:46 (thirteen years ago)

They were obv such a corny band, but they really did have great vocal melodies.

― Neckbeard's Castle (Mr Andy M), Monday, September 24, 2012 4:39 PM (6 minutes ago)

corny maybe, but pound for pound they produced the greatest body of work of any punk band imo

vincent black shadow giallo (Edward III), Monday, 24 September 2012 20:48 (thirteen years ago)

Aldo get in thread

Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 24 September 2012 20:50 (thirteen years ago)

playlist going from the adolescents -> iron maiden is causing some cognitive dissonance

vincent black shadow giallo (Edward III), Monday, 24 September 2012 20:50 (thirteen years ago)

surprised anyone doesn't like "so what", if i'm honest.

stirmonster, Monday, 24 September 2012 20:50 (thirteen years ago)

like, you look at how a song like "(Everyday Is) Halloween" is structured and then compare it to "So What", which is two minutes longer and has fewer musical ideas in it, and you really start seeing how Ministry really just turned into a vehicle for a drugged-up Jourgenson to shout at a microphone more than a band making music

Even "Flashback", which is a simple 4 minute long aggro blast, introduces more weirdo variations and phrases into its semi-brainless howl of anger than the meandering rumble of "So What", which basically alternates between "here's the part where the guitar noodles" and "here's the part where the guitar plays a riff" with little to no development within those sections distinguishing one from another as the song listlessly alternates through them, at which point I'm basically stuck trying to like the song solely because Al shouts "ANAL FUCKFEST" in it.

and that's why I don't like post-Land and Rape Ministry *bows*

cake-like Lady Gaga (DJP), Monday, 24 September 2012 20:50 (thirteen years ago)

*applause*

vincent black shadow giallo (Edward III), Monday, 24 September 2012 20:51 (thirteen years ago)

Oh not arguing with that, and I'd consider myself a fan. But they do have some elements where... the best way I could put it is I could imagine other people cringing although I don't. And a few indefensible lyrics obv.
xpost to EdwardIII

Neckbeard's Castle (Mr Andy M), Monday, 24 September 2012 20:52 (thirteen years ago)

I get the feeling Dan & John have been arguing about this for over 20 years.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 24 September 2012 20:54 (thirteen years ago)

Didn't vote for Candlemass, but Messiah era is great, aye. Chapter VI is fucking dreadful though.

passive-aggressive display name (aldo), Monday, 24 September 2012 20:54 (thirteen years ago)

I just want to say however WHY WASN'T JUST LIKE YOU NOMINATED?

Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 24 September 2012 20:55 (thirteen years ago)

Dio pwns

and I know it's assumed when I'm posting now but fyi its' criminal that Rainbow isn't higher

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 24 September 2012 20:55 (thirteen years ago)

hehehehe aldo is still sore from a messiah-less candlemass making a power metal album and not doom.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 24 September 2012 20:56 (thirteen years ago)

I strongly considered nominating Twitch era songs but they didn't feel sufficiently "rock" enough for what I thought ppl were looking for

In retrospect, I would have nominated the entire album and voted for "Isle of Man" and "The Angel Song"

If you don't dig this you're dead to me.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 24 September 2012 21:11 (thirteen years ago)

I do like "Deity" but it's not my favorite Rape and Honey song (which would be "You Know What You Are" or "Flashback")

cake-like Lady Gaga (DJP), Monday, 24 September 2012 21:12 (thirteen years ago)

It's no Into The Crypt Of Rays.

passive-aggressive display name (aldo), Monday, 24 September 2012 21:13 (thirteen years ago)

btw I'm listening to "Fascist Jock Itch" right now and kind of mad that I didn't vote for it; the Ministry template from this era works so much better on non-Ministry bands

cake-like Lady Gaga (DJP), Monday, 24 September 2012 21:14 (thirteen years ago)

I know I've been a bit 'meh' about most of the metal selections so far (this is just vmic for me I'm afraid) but yeah, this Celtic Frost one I quite like.

Neckbeard's Castle (Mr Andy M), Monday, 24 September 2012 21:16 (thirteen years ago)

how can anyone be meh about Candlemass?????

Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 24 September 2012 21:17 (thirteen years ago)

Think I tend to like my metal mid-to-slow tempo and chunky/crunchy sounding (with a few exceptions, e.g. I love Motothead's uptempo stuff).

Neckbeard's Castle (Mr Andy M), Monday, 24 September 2012 21:17 (thirteen years ago)

yeah cmon Candlemass is awesome

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 24 September 2012 21:18 (thirteen years ago)

xpost well then Candlemass is yr thing, they are super slow!

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 24 September 2012 21:18 (thirteen years ago)

yeah I don't remember hearing Candlemass before today and that's kind of my takeaway "I should look into this band more" for the day

cake-like Lady Gaga (DJP), Monday, 24 September 2012 21:18 (thirteen years ago)

xpost the vocals are certainly impressive, I'll give you that. They're not in a style I'd go out of my way for, but he's good at what he does.

Neckbeard's Castle (Mr Andy M), Monday, 24 September 2012 21:19 (thirteen years ago)

also if "Tin Omen" doesn't show up on this poll I'm gonna pitch one

cake-like Lady Gaga (DJP), Monday, 24 September 2012 21:19 (thirteen years ago)

Candlemass go from super slow to mid-paced epic doom and back again. Just like Trouble both bands are the gods of the genre along with a certain SST band.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 24 September 2012 21:20 (thirteen years ago)

ok the cries of TOO LOW are really gonna come thick and fast now. But blame those who cba voting.
