He came back but quit again. He's the fans favourite but a total diva.
― Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 24 September 2012 20:13 (thirteen years ago)
re. BHole Surfers. I should give them more time, but that doesn't seem right for that kind of band- either you like them or you don't, and I'm happy not to and accept I'm missing out.
― Arvo Pärt Chimp (Neil S), Monday, 24 September 2012 20:13 (thirteen years ago)
"Jesus Built My Hotrod" sucks super hard and has always been a terrible song
― cake-like Lady Gaga (DJP), Monday, 24 September 2012 20:13 (thirteen years ago)
The first Candlemass album is the best but it has a different singer. Hes great though. He did do roadburn with them a few years ago. They just recently sacked the Solitude Aeturnus singer Robert Lowe. He has an awesome voice too.

the butthole surfers album with some of their catchiest songs (psychic, powerless) starts with some of their weirdest, off-kilter songs, so it's not like they make it easy for anyone
― vincent black shadow giallo (Edward III), Monday, 24 September 2012 20:19 (thirteen years ago)
"To Parter" is great, and catchy.
― _Rudipherous_, Monday, 24 September 2012 20:20 (thirteen years ago)
Probably the song that got me to some attention to them, or to at least be more open the next time I heard something by them.
Ministry had a last gasp of goodness with In Case You Didn't Feel Like Showing Up, which rescued some of the weirdly limp aggro-bludgeons on A Mind... that should have been as awesome as "Burning Inside" but never were (specifically "So What" and the version of "Breathe" from the video that ended up on a Sire comp) but most of what was good on it were Rape and Honey tracks; by the time Psalm 69 came out, Ministry had made the decision to entirely jettison everything about them that was interesting and entertaining and double down on being a ball of empty aggression with some pat, corny samples thrown on top in order to maintain their industrial cred. From the 90s on, they've been completely useless as a band.

Case in point, this song is fucking blazing and wonderful and about a bazillion times better than anything Ministry released after 1990
― cake-like Lady Gaga (DJP), Monday, 24 September 2012 20:23 (thirteen years ago)
cuz I hate her
Mind.... is a brilliant album. As is psalm 69
― Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 24 September 2012 20:23 (thirteen years ago)
Mind has one great song ("Burning Inside"), two okay songs ("Thieves", "Faith Collapsing") and a gigantic amount of bullshit (everything else); Psalm 69 doesn't even have that
― cake-like Lady Gaga (DJP), Monday, 24 September 2012 20:25 (thirteen years ago)
xp yeah Psalm 69 is great
― Arvo Pärt Chimp (Neil S), Monday, 24 September 2012 20:25 (thirteen years ago)
it's sort of sad but it is a personal point of pride that I identified how horribly Ministry was starting to suck and jumped off the bandwagon before they could Filth Pig me

Ahhh nice, was starting to suspect no Misfits tunes would make it. Astro Zombies wasn't one of the ones I voted for (still great though).
― Neckbeard's Castle (Mr Andy M), Monday, 24 September 2012 20:39 (thirteen years ago)
They were obv such a corny band, but they really did have great vocal melodies.
this Dio track is great!
― Arvo Pärt Chimp (Neil S), Monday, 24 September 2012 20:40 (thirteen years ago)
Is that Dio tied with something? We're missing a #138.
― EveningStar (Sund4r), Monday, 24 September 2012 20:40 (thirteen years ago)
Also, whoa, jjj hates him some Sonic Youth.
Most of the Mind songs suffer from the same problem, which is that there is enough musical material to sustain the song for 2 - 3 minutes, but the songs go on for 6 - 8 minutes; I vividly remember my first listenthrough thinking that most of the songs started out great but got really REALLY old by the time they hit the three minute mark and "Burning Inside" was the only one that managed to sustain energy and interest over the course of the whole song (possibly because it is one of the few songs to make use of consistent rhythmic syncopation on the album).
It's the same problem that a lot of terrible acid records have, where the repetition does not build anywhere and basically you just keep hearing the same musical idea over and over and over with little to no development or variation, leaving this static pile that really is a textbook exercise in sound and fury signifying nothing.
― cake-like Lady Gaga (DJP), Monday, 24 September 2012 20:43 (thirteen years ago)
I was a huge fan of the first dinosaur rec for its ghostly melancholy + rawness, waited eagerly for the follow-up and when it came out it sounded like some well-formed pop album to me. so I was that guy walking around saying "the first album was better". prolly wasn't until '92 that I finally came around to it.
incidentally the other night somebody said to me "I like you, ed" and I involuntarily recited the opening to "clothes hoist"
― vincent black shadow giallo (Edward III), Monday, 24 September 2012 20:44 (thirteen years ago)
yeah its a tie with This but didn't want 2 of metals greatest vocalists to overshadow one another.

surprised anyone doesn't like "so what", if i'm honest.
― stirmonster, Monday, 24 September 2012 20:50 (thirteen years ago)
like, you look at how a song like "(Everyday Is) Halloween" is structured and then compare it to "So What", which is two minutes longer and has fewer musical ideas in it, and you really start seeing how Ministry really just turned into a vehicle for a drugged-up Jourgenson to shout at a microphone more than a band making music
Even "Flashback", which is a simple 4 minute long aggro blast, introduces more weirdo variations and phrases into its semi-brainless howl of anger than the meandering rumble of "So What", which basically alternates between "here's the part where the guitar noodles" and "here's the part where the guitar plays a riff" with little to no development within those sections distinguishing one from another as the song listlessly alternates through them, at which point I'm basically stuck trying to like the song solely because Al shouts "ANAL FUCKFEST" in it.
and that's why I don't like post-Land and Rape Ministry *bows*

*applause*
― vincent black shadow giallo (Edward III), Monday, 24 September 2012 20:51 (thirteen years ago)
Oh not arguing with that, and I'd consider myself a fan. But they do have some elements where... the best way I could put it is I could imagine other people cringing although I don't. And a few indefensible lyrics obv.xpost to EdwardIII
― Neckbeard's Castle (Mr Andy M), Monday, 24 September 2012 20:52 (thirteen years ago)
I get the feeling Dan & John have been arguing about this for over 20 years.
