I def don't get the Butthole Surfers but I still find myself listening to them quite a bit.

Neckbeard's Castle (Mr Andy M), Monday, 24 September 2012 20:03 (thirteen years ago)

Arvo Pärt Chimp (Neil S), Monday, 24 September 2012 20:04 (thirteen years ago)

Thanks jjj! And for that I give you...

Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 24 September 2012 20:06 (thirteen years ago)

I nominated and voted for both the Swans' Half Life and the Minutemen track. the Minutemen's Bob Dylan is superficially similar to all of their other tracks, but its locked guitar/bass clamor careens forward w/exceptional abandon, and earned it a top ten spot. the Swans track injects Sabbath fanaticism w/no-wave guitar racket f/an extra-loud dose of downer bliss. the best track of the Cop/Young God dirge era and a shining beacon of hateful intransigence. Night Ranger fans may find matters less to their liking.

oh yes

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Monday, 24 September 2012 20:09 (thirteen years ago)

when Butthole Surfers work for me, it's bcz… kind of agressive headfuckery hooked up to weird (but really technically together, imo) sonic assault. Tastes of acid a bit. Even when you're over the unexpectedness, there's nice detail scattered around their sounds.

woof, Monday, 24 September 2012 20:09 (thirteen years ago)

at the end of the day, this is the only unambiguously great post-Land of Rape and Honey song Ministry put out

cake-like Lady Gaga (DJP), Monday, 24 September 2012 20:10 (thirteen years ago)

bob dylan wrote protest songs is my go to "plz ezplain the minutemen to me i have 3 minutes" track.

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Monday, 24 September 2012 20:10 (thirteen years ago)

the butthole surfers have such a wide variety of styles and sounds that hearing a few tracks aren't really going to tell the story, plus it helps if you have or have had a massive drug problem, also if you don't like this song I don't really understand you

vincent black shadow giallo (Edward III), Monday, 24 September 2012 20:10 (thirteen years ago)

also who is the lead singer of Candlemass, because woah wasn't expecting to hear a lyric tenor singing metal (they're usually all heldens)

cake-like Lady Gaga (DJP), Monday, 24 September 2012 20:11 (thirteen years ago)

Jesus Built My Hotrod xxxp

Arvo Pärt Chimp (Neil S), Monday, 24 September 2012 20:11 (thirteen years ago)

Ministry Youtube is the amazing In Case You Didn't Feel Like Showing Up version which even kills the album version.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 24 September 2012 20:11 (thirteen years ago)

since its prob too late to see it place skinny puppys "facist jock itch" has for me the definitional stuttering hey whoa is the drum machine broken moment of the entire ministry experience

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Monday, 24 September 2012 20:12 (thirteen years ago)

Dan From their 2nd album onwards til 90s was Messiah Marcolin (the mad monk)

Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 24 September 2012 20:12 (thirteen years ago)

I am a huge minuteman fan and I don't really like "bob dylan wrote propaganda songs"

do you play it twice?

some dude, Monday, 24 September 2012 20:13 (thirteen years ago)

He came back but quit again. He's the fans favourite but a total diva.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 24 September 2012 20:13 (thirteen years ago)

re. BHole Surfers. I should give them more time, but that doesn't seem right for that kind of band- either you like them or you don't, and I'm happy not to and accept I'm missing out.

Arvo Pärt Chimp (Neil S), Monday, 24 September 2012 20:13 (thirteen years ago)

"Jesus Built My Hotrod" sucks super hard and has always been a terrible song

cake-like Lady Gaga (DJP), Monday, 24 September 2012 20:13 (thirteen years ago)

The first Candlemass album is the best but it has a different singer. Hes great though. He did do roadburn with them a few years ago.
They just recently sacked the Solitude Aeturnus singer Robert Lowe. He has an awesome voice too.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 24 September 2012 20:15 (thirteen years ago)

no way dan!

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 24 September 2012 20:18 (thirteen years ago)

the butthole surfers album with some of their catchiest songs (psychic, powerless) starts with some of their weirdest, off-kilter songs, so it's not like they make it easy for anyone

vincent black shadow giallo (Edward III), Monday, 24 September 2012 20:19 (thirteen years ago)

"To Parter" is great, and catchy.

_Rudipherous_, Monday, 24 September 2012 20:20 (thirteen years ago)

Probably the song that got me to some attention to them, or to at least be more open the next time I heard something by them.

_Rudipherous_, Monday, 24 September 2012 20:20 (thirteen years ago)

Ministry had a last gasp of goodness with In Case You Didn't Feel Like Showing Up, which rescued some of the weirdly limp aggro-bludgeons on A Mind... that should have been as awesome as "Burning Inside" but never were (specifically "So What" and the version of "Breathe" from the video that ended up on a Sire comp) but most of what was good on it were Rape and Honey tracks; by the time Psalm 69 came out, Ministry had made the decision to entirely jettison everything about them that was interesting and entertaining and double down on being a ball of empty aggression with some pat, corny samples thrown on top in order to maintain their industrial cred. From the 90s on, they've been completely useless as a band.

Case in point, this song is fucking blazing and wonderful and about a bazillion times better than anything Ministry released after 1990

cake-like Lady Gaga (DJP), Monday, 24 September 2012 20:23 (thirteen years ago)

cuz I hate her

cake-like Lady Gaga (DJP), Monday, 24 September 2012 20:23 (thirteen years ago)

Mind.... is a brilliant album. As is psalm 69

Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 24 September 2012 20:23 (thirteen years ago)

Mind has one great song ("Burning Inside"), two okay songs ("Thieves", "Faith Collapsing") and a gigantic amount of bullshit (everything else); Psalm 69 doesn't even have that

cake-like Lady Gaga (DJP), Monday, 24 September 2012 20:25 (thirteen years ago)

xp yeah Psalm 69 is great

Arvo Pärt Chimp (Neil S), Monday, 24 September 2012 20:25 (thirteen years ago)

it's sort of sad but it is a personal point of pride that I identified how horribly Ministry was starting to suck and jumped off the bandwagon before they could Filth Pig me
