man I had actually forgotten how much I like Lard

cake-like Lady Gaga (DJP), Monday, 24 September 2012 15:22 (thirteen years ago)

someone explain Hanoi Rocks to me

― cake-like Lady Gaga (DJP),

They're the band Guns 'N Roses wanted to be.
ps fuck vince neil.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 24 September 2012 15:23 (thirteen years ago)

huh

based on the song on this countdown I expected the answer to be "on of the dudes is my cousin and I felt bad so I threw them a vote"

cake-like Lady Gaga (DJP), Monday, 24 September 2012 15:26 (thirteen years ago)

Must be a cousin of Tuomas then as they're finnish.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 24 September 2012 15:31 (thirteen years ago)

DJP - Hanoi Rocks = fun early trashy glam - they influenced a lot of the early LA hair metal

it helps if you think of them in a New York Dolls way, where attitude is everything and the playing/performance isn't meant to blow you away so much as grow on you (like the many fungi in their leather pants)

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 24 September 2012 15:31 (thirteen years ago)

i personally love them but for some reason completely spaced on voting for them ;_;

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 24 September 2012 15:32 (thirteen years ago)

ah okay, that does give better perspective because right now my overall reaction was "these guys are making me appreciate the nuance and subtlety of Skid Row"

From the 2 HR tracks that have placed, I enjoyed Tragedy a lot. Don't Ever Leave me... erm, not so much.
I've been kind of wary of HR ever since they were cited as a major on the first Manics album, which imo was about 70% garbage (albeit garbage with good lyrics in places). Maybe it's time to give them a proper try.

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 24 September 2012 15:38 (thirteen years ago)

I paused the playlist because Ned pointed out the new Mountain Goats album stream is up on NPR; be back to this after lunch

cake-like Lady Gaga (DJP), Monday, 24 September 2012 15:39 (thirteen years ago)

I think if you set up a playlist with some early KISS b-sides/demos and New York Dolls and then some Hanoi Rocks you can get a better sonic picture of where they fit in

Tragedy is great. I love Don't Ever Leave Me but my heart is full of cheez whiz so

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 24 September 2012 15:40 (thirteen years ago)

btw Colourbox is great

cake-like Lady Gaga (DJP), Monday, 24 September 2012 15:53 (thirteen years ago)

to those who say tracks are "too low" perhaps you should have campaigned for them!

Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 24 September 2012 15:57 (thirteen years ago)

yay Branca! yay Loop! yay Mariah Carey!

did drake invent yolo (Drugs A. Money), Monday, 24 September 2012 16:00 (thirteen years ago)

I don't remember if I voted for "Collision" or not, but I really like that song, and Loop as a whole grows on you after a bit...

I probably would've nom'd their cover of the Pop Group's Thief of Fire

did drake invent yolo (Drugs A. Money), Monday, 24 September 2012 16:01 (thirteen years ago)

I'm too lazy to campaign

I like complaining very much though, so it works out well for me

Sweet, another one for the 'never heard before but it's right up my street' list.

Neckbeard's Castle (Mr Andy M), Monday, 24 September 2012 16:36 (thirteen years ago)

Feels very post-punky to me, in a way I'm surprised that it's from as late as 86 (not a complaint).

Neckbeard's Castle (Mr Andy M), Monday, 24 September 2012 16:37 (thirteen years ago)

Imagine what you would all miss out on if we stuck to top 50s only.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 24 September 2012 16:38 (thirteen years ago)

Yeah I'll admit that I raised an eyebrow when I first saw that we were starting at 250 but it's turned out to be a great decision.

I nominated the Scratch Acid, Rapeman and Live Skull. didn't vote for Rapeman, and Scratch Acid was in the bottom ten, but Fort Belvedere was top 5. easily their best track, managing a perfectly-balanced tension between angry, propulsive dissonance and a narcotic, noirish haze. fantastic and underrated.

No that wasn't it

Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 24 September 2012 17:38 (thirteen years ago)

Live Skull song is really terrific.

did drake invent yolo (Drugs A. Money), Monday, 24 September 2012 17:39 (thirteen years ago)

I was also thinking "this A. R. Kane song is cool but why is it in the countdown?"

cake-like Lady Gaga (DJP), Monday, 24 September 2012 17:41 (thirteen years ago)

also thinking I should relisten to Treasure, I don't remember digging it the last time I played it but "Persephone" is a little like "Blood Bitch" with the edges sanded off

cake-like Lady Gaga (DJP), Monday, 24 September 2012 17:44 (thirteen years ago)

I'm always happy when AR Kane makes any countdown we do
