"Heartbreak" is on High & Dry (and is v classic imo).

I really thought "The Tower" would be top 50!
oh yeahxp
― Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 24 September 2012 15:08 (thirteen years ago)
Contenderizer and I both said we'd rank it #1. Apparently neither of us did.

The Tower isn't as good as It's Catching Up imo but I still dig it.There's something about a lot of nmn songs that can be really exhausting, in a good way. The drums really pummel you.
― Neckbeard's Castle (Mr Andy M), Monday, 24 September 2012 15:09 (thirteen years ago)
From Best Power Ballad? :"Bringing on the Heartbreak" has to be a contender. The chunky guitars that pop in during the pre-chorus are so jarring (Radiohead stole this idea for "Creep"), and Joe Elliot's accent on the "taking all the best of me" line is amazing; all the refinement is stripped away and he just sounds like a pathetic lout. And then he takes it up an octave for the chorus...he's like, "fuck it, I'll SING my way through this" -- it's a power ballad with all sorts of personality! Also "Still Loving You" by the Scorpions, a song that seems to go on for 3 years before getting to the part everyone remembers -- the tension/release is amazing!― Kris, Friday, 26 April 2002 19:00 (10 years ago)

Or, indeed, who I'm replying to .

Must be a cousin of Tuomas then as they're finnish.
― Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 24 September 2012 15:31 (thirteen years ago)
DJP - Hanoi Rocks = fun early trashy glam - they influenced a lot of the early LA hair metal
it helps if you think of them in a New York Dolls way, where attitude is everything and the playing/performance isn't meant to blow you away so much as grow on you (like the many fungi in their leather pants)
― set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 24 September 2012 15:31 (thirteen years ago)

From the 2 HR tracks that have placed, I enjoyed Tragedy a lot. Don't Ever Leave me... erm, not so much.I've been kind of wary of HR ever since they were cited as a major on the first Manics album, which imo was about 70% garbage (albeit garbage with good lyrics in places). Maybe it's time to give them a proper try.

I paused the playlist because Ned pointed out the new Mountain Goats album stream is up on NPR; be back to this after lunch
― cake-like Lady Gaga (DJP), Monday, 24 September 2012 15:39 (thirteen years ago)
I think if you set up a playlist with some early KISS b-sides/demos and New York Dolls and then some Hanoi Rocks you can get a better sonic picture of where they fit in
Tragedy is great. I love Don't Ever Leave Me but my heart is full of cheez whiz so

I probably would've nom'd their cover of the Pop Group's Thief of Fire
