i voted for these:

Metallica - Battery 239 Points, 4 Votes
Megadeth - Peace Sells 244 Points, 5 Votes
Napalm Death - You Suffer 253 Points, 4 Votes One #1
Pixies - River Euphrates 263 Points, 4 Votes (TIE)

really glad to You Suffer place 59 slots ahead of Livin on a Prayer - well worth my #1

Broney, Pt. 1 (Pillbox), Monday, 24 September 2012 09:15 (thirteen years ago)

Nice one, I voted You Suffer as well. This poll is giving me carte blanche to listen to far too much of The Cult. They're super silly but very addictive.

Arvo Pärt Chimp (Neil S), Monday, 24 September 2012 09:21 (thirteen years ago)

lots of v. cool stuff to check out in this list so far.

re: F/i -

posted this way upthread in the middle of the day, so I'm just gonna repost once more:

excellent F/i comp featuring all five nominations can be grabbed here.

Hellhouse, Monday, 24 September 2012 09:40 (thirteen years ago)

great list so far. great variety. makes me wish I had not left 15 or so spots open on my ballots, but after picking 35 absolute favorites I was left with about 150 songs vying for the last 15 spots.

nicky lo-fi, Monday, 24 September 2012 11:24 (thirteen years ago)

I think on another day my ballot would have been very different.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 24 September 2012 12:24 (thirteen years ago)

^That's really nice, quite different to what I expected.

Neckbeard's Castle (Mr Andy M), Monday, 24 September 2012 12:27 (thirteen years ago)

Did you expect lots of skronk?

Yeah I dunno, I guess I had it in my head that it would be something deliberately patternless/centreless. Showing my ignorance here obv.

Neckbeard's Castle (Mr Andy M), Monday, 24 September 2012 12:43 (thirteen years ago)

woah, way too low

some dude, Monday, 24 September 2012 12:44 (thirteen years ago)

Ooh nice, Hot For Teacher was on my ballot. Had forgotten how much I liked Van Halen until I went through the tracks list.

Neckbeard's Castle (Mr Andy M), Monday, 24 September 2012 12:44 (thirteen years ago)

seems about right

Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 24 September 2012 12:54 (thirteen years ago)

70s Halen >>>> 80s Halen

Arvo Pärt Chimp (Neil S), Monday, 24 September 2012 12:56 (thirteen years ago)

Branca was one of my nominations and was in my top 20. one of his most accessible and "rocking" works outside of The Theoretical Girls/Static. the track begins in a recognizably minimalist vein with a stark foundation of compulsive, skeletal guitars, but around the 2:40 mark kicks in with rolling drums and additional layers of interlocking guitars that build into an anthemic, exuberant tangle. recommended.

Anyone expect that to be higher?

Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 24 September 2012 13:32 (thirteen years ago)

It's "Thorn"

some dude, Monday, 24 September 2012 13:38 (thirteen years ago)

some bollocks

Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 24 September 2012 13:40 (thirteen years ago)

yeah I like VH well enough pre- and post-1980, but that's a weird statement.

Arvo Pärt Chimp (Neil S), Monday, 24 September 2012 13:42 (thirteen years ago)

it's not THAT weird a statement, it's just one that would never occur to 90% of the ppl on this thread; outside our bubble I am certain that's the more prevalent opinion

cake-like Lady Gaga (DJP), Monday, 24 September 2012 13:46 (thirteen years ago)

having said that, lol some dude u mad

xxp to some dude.

Hellhouse, Monday, 24 September 2012 13:49 (thirteen years ago)

FUCK YES

cake-like Lady Gaga (DJP), Monday, 24 September 2012 13:50 (thirteen years ago)

love that PWEI track, love the whole album. 'not now james were busy' is probably my fave though.

Michael B Higgins (Michael B), Monday, 24 September 2012 13:50 (thirteen years ago)

SIXTEEN DIFFERENT FLAVORS OF HELL

yes "Not Now James, We're Busy" is fucking great as well, plus "Satellite Ecstatica" and "Preaching To The Perverted" and "Can U Dig It?" and really the entire album except "Def Con One" is amazing

cake-like Lady Gaga (DJP), Monday, 24 September 2012 13:51 (thirteen years ago)

xxxp oh yeah I know VH are mad popular, and that I'm an indie rockist savage, but I would take quite a few of the 80s stadium rock bands over 80s VH, which might just be another manifestation of my disgusting indie rockism.

Arvo Pärt Chimp (Neil S), Monday, 24 September 2012 13:52 (thirteen years ago)

the grauzone -> branca -> halen transition is kinda hilar

vincent black shadow giallo (Edward III), Monday, 24 September 2012 13:54 (thirteen years ago)

That's ILM in a nutshell

Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 24 September 2012 13:55 (thirteen years ago)

A couple of better stadium rock bands due up very soon actually.

i'm just talking the usual shit that always gets talked on these threads, if you guys think i'm being too sensitive or you're feeling too sensitive about it i can stop

some dude, Monday, 24 September 2012 14:04 (thirteen years ago)

no, its funny!

Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 24 September 2012 14:05 (thirteen years ago)

plus the cult kick van halens arse anyway! everyone knows that!

Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 24 September 2012 14:05 (thirteen years ago)

iirc there was an equal number of Cult and Van Halen songs on my ballot

some dude, Monday, 24 September 2012 14:07 (thirteen years ago)

I wouldn't say I hate the Cult but there's no way that they're better than VH.

Neckbeard's Castle (Mr Andy M), Monday, 24 September 2012 14:09 (thirteen years ago)

xxxp nah it's cool, I'm always willing to be contradicted.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 24 September 2012 14:15 (thirteen years ago)

Van Halen have a ton of dope tracks - all sadly compromised by the singing of David Lee Roth or Sammy Hagar.

Broney, Pt. 1 (Pillbox), Monday, 24 September 2012 14:19 (thirteen years ago)

I nominated both KMFDM and PWEI but regret that "A Drug Against War" didn't make my final ballot. I probably should have found the space.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Monday, 24 September 2012 14:20 (thirteen years ago)

Some great guitar on "Hot for Teacher" btw. That placing seems low to me too but after "Livin' on a Prayer" placed below #200, I'm not too surprised.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Monday, 24 September 2012 14:22 (thirteen years ago)

heavy rock fans are the hardest people to get to vote for some reason. Doom metallers no problem. Black metallers no problem, rivetheads no problem. Poodles? impossible!

Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 24 September 2012 14:24 (thirteen years ago)

I mean, mainstream radio listeners, who would probably near-universally prefer Van Halen to Swans, are less likely to take the time to make a ballot for a poll like this.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Monday, 24 September 2012 14:26 (thirteen years ago)

This Loop song is really close to lots of stuff that I'm into but for some reasons just isn't doing it for me.

Neckbeard's Castle (Mr Andy M), Monday, 24 September 2012 14:27 (thirteen years ago)

xpost it seemed clear to me from the noms list that this was going to be a mixture of mainstream and underground right through.
