what kind of person is friends of friends with pipecock on facebook ;-)

the late great, Saturday, 22 September 2012 19:59 (thirteen years ago)

i find it easy to dance to "getting me down" and difficult to dance to this new one but i'm not a musicologist so i can't break down the difference for you.

the late great, Saturday, 22 September 2012 20:00 (thirteen years ago)

this track is great

A.R.R.Y. Kane (nakhchivan), Saturday, 22 September 2012 20:06 (thirteen years ago)

this one's all a bit furrowed-brow and closed-off where "Getting Me Down" was open and joyous and that makes all the difference. I think I like this track in concept but it doesn't quite work as a practical thing.

tuomas without a nose ring (The Reverend), Saturday, 22 September 2012 20:21 (thirteen years ago)

It's furrowed-brow in a way that I can get with, like it pulls me into the mood it's trying to create rather than keeping me at a distance from it, if that makes any sense.

Grimes, Shoots & Leaves (Mr Andy M), Saturday, 22 September 2012 20:26 (thirteen years ago)

sure, but I have the opposite reaction.

tuomas without a nose ring (The Reverend), Saturday, 22 September 2012 20:48 (thirteen years ago)

am i the only one that can't dance to it

the late great, Saturday, 22 September 2012 20:55 (thirteen years ago)

I'd prob leave the dancefloor if it came on

tuomas without a nose ring (The Reverend), Saturday, 22 September 2012 21:28 (thirteen years ago)

there's something about

um

i want to say or agree that the beat in "getting me down" somehow gets more open after the first beat, whereas the new one the beat just bears down even further after the first beat

it's like in getting me down the 2-3-4 gets increasingly syncopated while the 2-3-4 sounds squashed down in the new one

also does anyone else find blawan's tracks annoyingly painful to mix?

the late great, Saturday, 22 September 2012 21:37 (thirteen years ago)

this is my favorite blawan track

perfect mix of syncopation and stomp imo

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L8kCl4-hb0s

but then it's not 100% blawan either

the late great, Saturday, 22 September 2012 21:37 (thirteen years ago)

you know after relistening to both a bunch of times, i think i couldn't have described more clearly what *i hear* as the difference

he open up a bunch of space between the 2 and 3 beat in "getting me down", sometimes dropping the 3rd beat altogether. opens up a bunch of space. whereas in "why they hide they bodies" he just bears down on the 2-3-4 and it sounds rushed.

not that i don't like "why they hide they bodies", i just think it's a step-less-danceable from "peaches (melting flesh)" which did a similar trick, but it is very very catchy

the late great, Saturday, 22 September 2012 22:16 (thirteen years ago)

"peaches" has the same trick where he delays the third beat to give it swing

he does do a similar thing on "why they hide my bodies" but it's with the vocal sample, the kickdrum to me just sounds like a gradually accelerating straight stomp, i guess there is some swing in the form of those offset lino squeak noises under the beat but its kinda just BANG BANG BANG for six minutes, bit much imo

the late great, Saturday, 22 September 2012 22:20 (thirteen years ago)

i have trouble counting the beat as anything other than one-and-two-AND-one-and-two-AND-one-and-two-AND and i think that sounds cramped (i guess it is probably claustrophobic in a shallow grave under a garage)

the late great, Saturday, 22 September 2012 22:21 (thirteen years ago)

track of the year maybe? sounds to my ears like some lost post punk gem jacked right up for the 21st century.

― stirmonster, Friday, September 21, 2012 12:18 PM (Yesterday)

there is a bit of implog in this

A.R.R.Y. Kane (nakhchivan), Saturday, 22 September 2012 22:35 (thirteen years ago)

His stuff is kind of hard to mix, yeah. He's got kind of a unique rhythmic style to his tracks that I can't quite put my finger on. The only tracks of his I ever play out tho are "Getting Me Down" and this edit of "Lavender" that Brainwasher made.

tuomas without a nose ring (The Reverend), Saturday, 22 September 2012 23:20 (thirteen years ago)

"Lavender" is def easier to mix than GMD or Bodies tho.

tuomas without a nose ring (The Reverend), Saturday, 22 September 2012 23:21 (thirteen years ago)

gonna reiterate, this sounds like m_nus from 5/6 year ago. it's incredibly rote. can't even see why it merits a mention.

Know how Roo feel (LocalGarda), Saturday, 22 September 2012 23:50 (thirteen years ago)

his stuff is hard to mix because it runs off-beat and the parts wander

the late great, Sunday, 23 September 2012 00:58 (thirteen years ago)

also does anyone else find blawan's tracks annoyingly painful to mix?

i think this and "getting me down" were perfectly constructed for mixing with their extended beat intros before the actual track kicks in. mixing them in and then pulling the other track out one beat before they kick in always work for me. mixing out of them is not so easy.

stirmonster, Sunday, 23 September 2012 05:23 (thirteen years ago)

Rev otm about the un-fun undanceable nature of this vis-à-vis Getting Me Down

lex pretend, Sunday, 23 September 2012 09:39 (thirteen years ago)

it's (dumb) fun to the max!

want to start a thread called "people who blawan better than blawan"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P9LS3KXJGHM

the late great, Tuesday, 2 October 2012 10:46 (thirteen years ago)

I actively dislike this record. I doubt it would be worth much discussion if it wasn't for the vocal sample, which is really annoying.

Blawan strikes me as ludicrously overrated at this stage.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 2 October 2012 10:49 (thirteen years ago)

I'm honestly not surprised by your reaction to this Matt DC.

This Is... The Police (dog latin), Tuesday, 2 October 2012 10:56 (thirteen years ago)

xpost I dunno, that GoldFFinch tune reminds me way way more of the TEETH track from last year. It's a lot softer and than Blawan plus the video is has a vv similar aesthetic to 'Shawty'.

bass, Tuesday, 2 October 2012 13:01 (thirteen years ago)

what's the TEETH track?

The track in the op is really good.

I don't know how I missed this thread but this track is basically "One Night In NYC" meets "Nightmare" meets "Flash" and I love it to death

Jesus, the Total Douchebag (DJP), Tuesday, 18 December 2012 22:46 (thirteen years ago)

In related news (that prob won't be interesting to DJP, but nevertheless). http://www.residentadvisor.net/event.aspx?405095 - anyone going?

Zero Dark 33⅓: The Final Insult (Eric H.), Monday, 31 December 2012 07:24 (thirteen years ago)

Blawan and Untold were remarkably techno-y on NYE. I mean, I know Blawan is basically techno, but I still think of him as being firmly in the partisans rather than bobbins camp.

besides Sunny Real Estate (dog latin), Thursday, 3 January 2013 14:48 (thirteen years ago)

I kind of find it interesting that "Getting Me Down" sounds definitely post-dubstep and "WTHTBUMG" sounds definitely techno even tho they have pretty much the same beat.

hemioblock (The Reverend), Friday, 4 January 2013 02:58 (thirteen years ago)

Yes, definitely. It's like this slow mutation from party-bass to grinding industrial horror noise just by tweaking a parameter. Not many people mentioned Long Distance Open Water Worker EP from earlier in 2012 which was also very weird skewed techno, if not as catchy as the other singles.

hooray, top 20, yay.

you know, there's a totally bonkers techno/noise/concrete thing on the b-side that sounds like Autechre or Actress trapped in a threshing machine.
