Heheh, this thread is wending its way across a strange minefield. Donut Ferry to thread.

Anyway, whoever mentioned Basehead in comparison to the horrors above needs a beating.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 00:49 (twenty years ago)

Ned, I can't remember, have you heard that Me Phi Me album?

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 00:51 (twenty years ago)

Yes I have, though the memories are dim.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 00:53 (twenty years ago)

it was a sunshine-pop/classical guitar/rap/black fraternity cult/krisna hybrid with a dash of honey. came out the same year as spiral walls containing autumns of light, so it ended up being one of the more normal rap albums of 1992.

hey how about LFO (not THAT lfo)?!

i read an article about the lead guy a couple of months ago... he has cancer now!!

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 14:44 (twenty years ago)

I kinda like Soul Coughing. Although I feel somewhat guilty admitting that, for some reason. But the heart wants what it wants.

Soul Coughing were unnaturally popular in Minneapolis. Like the Gear Daddies of rap-rock!

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 14:48 (twenty years ago)

Soul Coughing was awesome! M. Doughty for President!

AND LET DAN GO THRU

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 14:51 (twenty years ago)

the Current plays alot of the new M Doughty solo stuff...it's not nearly as good....his new band is way boring....he still has a nice way with his wierd voice and a good line, but most of the stuff seems pretty dull....

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 14:52 (twenty years ago)

SUPER BON BON SUPER BON BON

El Oso was better, though.

The idea of boring new M Doughty makes me sad inside. He should have joined 808 State full time.

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 14:53 (twenty years ago)

He should have joined 808 State full time.

Now this I will agree with.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 14:54 (twenty years ago)

One time Soul Coughing played an instore at Let It Be downtown, and me and my roommates tried to get in, but here was like 300 people trying....Don Shelby from WCCO News was there, cuz his daughter liked them....he was still wearing his suit and makeup from the 6 o'clock news, smoking a big cigar and just generally looking like Big Willie...that dude is gangsta...all the college kids were on his jock...I shook the great man's hand.

The idea of boring new M Doughty makes me sad inside. He should have joined 808 State full time.

basically, imagine taking all the weird, rappy, dancey, decent rhythm section stuff out of Soul Coughing and replace them with like Semisonic as the backing band....

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 14:54 (twenty years ago)

My defense of G. Love: I saw him for free at University of Maryland in '96 or '97 and:
1. He was opening for Run DMC; and
2. His bass player was this old fat guy with a really long gray beard. He looked like a truck driver and I think he beatboxed at one point.

n/a (Nick A.), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 14:56 (twenty years ago)

G. Love drank some of my 40 at a free concert at Wheaton College.

Lupton Pitman (Chris V), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 14:59 (twenty years ago)

The guy from LFO has cancer?!

I've been sampling him quite frequently....greatest lyrics of all-time!

katie, a princess (katie, a princess), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 15:04 (twenty years ago)

A zillion posts into this thread, and this will be a first:

I do not mind G. Love at all. I mind him a lot less than Jack Johnson or Donavon Frankenreiter, which is admittedly damning with faint praise, but all those people have a place in the scheme of things.

"Astronaut" was my very favorite song of last summer. Near perfect, including the fucked-up sound. What's wrong with it?

Vornado, Wednesday, 17 August 2005 15:05 (twenty years ago)

that is a really poor defense nick

What's that easy, I wonder. Seething hate?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 15:19 (twenty years ago)

He kicked my friend's band off a bill in Florida because the owner didn't tell him there was an opener.

They got drunk and keyed WHITEY GO HOME on the side of his van!

Whiney G. Weingarten (whineyg), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 15:19 (twenty years ago)

hahahaha

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 15:20 (twenty years ago)

I remember not having an opinion on G-Love one way or the other until I saw them live. It's kind of hard not to feel contempt for someone who exudes self-satisfied "Oh yeah, I AM ROCKING YOUR WORLD; you've heard me on the radio" vibes when they are performing on a stage three feet off the ground in the middle of a tiny, tiny patch of grass. Plus, instead of rocking my world they were lulling it to sleep with boring boring music.

I half-expected dude to whip out his cock, cum on the three people dancing in front of the stage (as opposed to the 20 standing around drinking the free beer and the 300 who walked onto the quad, looked at the band and turned away with the most priceless "OH HELL NO" faces ever pulled) and shout "THIS IS WHAT GOOD MUSIC TASTES LIKE, BABY!" but that would have been interesting and I could see three minutes into the set that "interesting" just wasn't on the cards for that day. When the ad-hoc student band puts on a more engaging and professional show than you do, it's time for some healthy self-examination.

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 15:29 (twenty years ago)

I love you.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 15:30 (twenty years ago)

I know.

The Ghost of Han Solo (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 15:32 (twenty years ago)

It's going to take some doing to fit me into that damned bounty hunter disguise.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 15:35 (twenty years ago)

At some point I realized that G Love's vocalizations sounded just like Eddie Murphy's Buckwheat impression...RAPPING.

Then, my reasoned hatred became crystallized and clear.

John Justen (johnjusten), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 15:36 (twenty years ago)

Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha (to be continued...)

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 15:37 (twenty years ago)

I used to like them.

Adam In Real Life (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 15:38 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, It's That Easy is a very good album.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 15:38 (twenty years ago)

The very last song on it about moving out of mom's house for the first time is a total fucking classic.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 15:39 (twenty years ago)

I actually hate how good that album is compared to everything that has come since.

one year passes...

Come on guys

Think of the worst band in the world and then listen to the first two records by G Love. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised. He just wants you to be happy!

eleven months pass...

Plenty of hate upthread -- c'mon; these guys have plenty of fine tunes.

Electric Mile is a fine album that gets my most replays -- most noted is the variety of styles and the always engaging contributions on the Hammond from John Medeski (and far funkier than Dr. John delivered on Yeah, it's that Easy).

As for the "arrogance" everybody seems to be clamoring about, his genesis is rooted in Hip Hop, and self-aggrandizement is a near prerequisite. BFD.

But i understand he's a polarizing figure; hell, his best bud, Jack Johnson one of the most cringe-worthy musicians i've ever heard.

no one in the uk has ever heard of this band

This is probably not strictly true - I had the misfortune to walk past them playing the main stage at Glastonbury festival one year, somebody must have heard of them.

Just noise and screaming and no musical value at all. (Colonel Poo), Thursday, 12 May 2016 16:19 (ten years ago)

My first time seeing this thread, tip o' the hat to JJJ for this lol:
