B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 10:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Absolutely. Can we get a photo?

briania (briania), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 11:14 (twenty-one years ago)

I was invoked above. Sort of, in a way.

Great album, been a while since I listened to it I admit.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 11:59 (twenty-one years ago)

"schemin' on a blowjob" line is from Killah Priest...as good as he is, I still think RZA steals the show - especially his hectic verse on "Trippin'"

Space Is the Place (Space Is the Place), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 13:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think Bob Digi gets enough props as a rapper.

briania (briania), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 13:50 (twenty-one years ago)

That is Killah Priest?!!? Really?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 14:26 (twenty-one years ago)

no it's not, it's grym reaper!

pete b. (pete b.), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 14:27 (twenty-one years ago)

And the Grym Reaper is Frukwan or someone, right?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 14:35 (twenty-one years ago)

those Gravediggaz nicknames in full!

2 Poetic - The Grym Reaper
Frukwan - The Gatekeeper
RZA - The RZArector (do you see?!)
Prince Paul - The Undertaker

pete b. (pete b.), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 14:37 (twenty-one years ago)

i liked the clean version better (maybe the only hip-hop album where that is so), since nearly every line has a weird sound effect over the no-no's (gun click, shovel, cough, knife sharpened, scream, splat, etc.) giving it a whole other level of noise.

BbetaA, Tuesday, 21 September 2004 14:38 (twenty-one years ago)

This was one of the first albums I ever listened to ON WEED. It was PERFECT.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 15:50 (twenty-one years ago)

GREAT. GREAT. GREAT.

1-800-suicide PWNZ.

ddb (ddb), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 17:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Too Poetic does the verse with "Old fat Ned, schemin' on a blow job from a crackhead". Dude had some of the best vocal inflections I've ever heard. Very creative.

His verse on "Mommy, What's A Gravedigga? (RZA Full Mix)" is fucking awesome. Like the part where he goes "You was washed in the blooooooooooooooooooooood of a lamb to be cleansed!" is cool.

Rollie Pemberton (Rollie Pemberton), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 17:20 (twenty-one years ago)

OMG somebody needs to do a mashup of Gravediggaz and Screamin' Jay Hawkins.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 17:46 (twenty-one years ago)

ah, I stand corrected...it's been a long time, must break that one out today

Space Is the Place (Space Is the Place), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 17:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Too Poetic is the one who was in Stetsasonic, right?

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 17:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Prince Paul and Frukwan were both in Stetsasonic. Not Too Poetic.

Rollie Pemberton (Rollie Pemberton), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 17:58 (twenty-one years ago)

horror rap was pretty big a while back, and the competition isn't throwaway, oops. brutha lynch hung, dr. octagon (second prize), that one rapper from detroit... ICP . . . tech n9ne just had the cover of murderdog. anyway, dr octagon wasn't bad.

peter $.., Wednesday, 22 September 2004 00:38 (twenty-one years ago)

dr. octagon is in no way horror rap. skitzo rap, yes.

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 04:02 (twenty-one years ago)

but yeah, i don't know how i overlooked the genius of that one rapper from detroit.

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 04:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Matt B. (Matt B.), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 11:17 (twenty-one years ago)

"yo, we can wet up two cups of blood!"

Eisbär (llamasfur), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 06:12 (twenty-one years ago)

and i wouldn't be so quick to pin ICP on the gravediggaz ... not that that would be a problem for dan.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 06:13 (twenty-one years ago)

three years pass...

Now on emusic. And even better than I remembered it being.

Hurting 2, Tuesday, 27 May 2008 12:46 (eighteen years ago)

You know what I only just discovered and can't believe I slept on so long? Liquid Swords! What's weird is I stuck it on the other night getting ready to blow my non-muso pals' minds and they were all "I can't believe you never heard this before"!

the next grozart, Tuesday, 27 May 2008 15:58 (eighteen years ago)

"Freak the Sorceress" on whatever Gravediggaz 12" it is rules as well.

I've got a dbl 12" with a version of "1-800 Suicide" with totally different, Jim Jones inspired, lyrics too.

The Portishead remix of 'em is dull tho'.

Raw Patrick, Tuesday, 27 May 2008 16:04 (eighteen years ago)

Is this the same as the video version of the song? Because it has totally different lyrics which are less satirical and more anti-suicide.

This album is sublime.

BANG YOUR HEAD

"Taste's very strange!" (stevie), Tuesday, 21 November 2017 09:58 (eight years ago)

Or be like Richard Pryor set your balls on fire ..

calzino, Tuesday, 21 November 2017 10:01 (eight years ago)

Gravediggaz got some votes from me, at least, in the ongoing Wu poll: THE POLL IS COMIN THROUGH, THE OUTCOME IS CRITICAL — WU-TANG CLAN — Artist Poll — Results

2 Cups of Blood is my jam.

Neil S, Tuesday, 21 November 2017 10:03 (eight years ago)

If this wouldn't include "Bang Your Head", it'd be a perfect album. I always skip that track, cos the beat sounds so horrible, what were they thinking?! It's still better than any other album featuring RZA tho.

Tuomas, Tuesday, 21 November 2017 12:03 (eight years ago)

one year passes...

6 feet deep is 25 years old today...

wow hard disagree. its perfectly sloppy, very fitting on the album for me.

big city slam (Spottie), Friday, 9 August 2019 21:01 (six years ago)

yeah i wouldn't change a thing about this record its perfect

ciderpress, Friday, 9 August 2019 21:01 (six years ago)

I so loved this one at the time and 1-800 Suicide is a stone cold classic, where the fuck does 25 years go so fast?

calzino, Friday, 9 August 2019 21:33 (six years ago)

During one of the roughest, most hopeless nights of my life, I got cute with myself and decided to listen to "1-800-SUICIDE" again. Uh, that was a bad idea. The sound of that sampled laughing became the sound of everyone who ever wanted anyone to kill themselves, ironically or not. Their voices became the sound of me laughing at my own pointless self-pitying, unable to escape the pointlessness, hating myself more and more for thinking what I was thinking what I was thinking. "You don't even HAVE any REAL problems, you fucking loser." Not exactly a helpful mindset to be in when you want to get out of that mindset.

I liked it when I first heard it, but the friend who played it for me the first time twenty years ago turned out to be a giant asshole, anyway. Dickwads like Tyler the Creator probably jack off to it.

Gimme Liquid Swords instead, that at least has your back.

del griffith, Friday, 9 August 2019 21:58 (six years ago)

yeah, I've never understood the appeal of this album. even at the time I didn't like it.

Οὖτις, Friday, 9 August 2019 22:08 (six years ago)

really good production by Prince Paul is the appeal

A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Friday, 9 August 2019 22:11 (six years ago)

it does sound pretty neat on the ol' ears, that's true

del griffith, Friday, 9 August 2019 22:13 (six years ago)

lol, you don't half get some convoluted bollox on ilm!

calzino, Friday, 9 August 2019 22:15 (six years ago)

Paul can be a bit much (Psychoanalysis, for ex.) Love Prince Among Thieves tho, that's an underrated masterpiece

Οὖτις, Friday, 9 August 2019 22:16 (six years ago)

fine album is it, not listened in years like.

calzino, Friday, 9 August 2019 22:18 (six years ago)

it's that time of year again

Left, Wednesday, 25 October 2023 14:20 (two years ago)

I am always impressed by how well integrated the album's "true horror" elements are within the fun/camp/parody framework of the whole thing - reality keeps intruding into these songs in a subtle but persistent way which feels more horror than comedy-horror - sometimes the comedy elements are the point but other times they feel more like tools for getting to a deeper darker place

that KRS1 sample in 1 800 Suicide still sounds great. I was so in love with this album that I tried really hard to love their 2nd one as well and it just never landed with me.

I’m having one of those days where I think the grym reaper performance on this album is one of the best of all time. Such a bummer he died young. Didn’t realize he was born in T&T
