judging a band on their fans is the lamest thing ever

i completely disagree with this and yet i can't quite explain why..

although there are frequently associations of people and events when we think of music, and that helps make up our personal likes and dislikes. but if we're going to talk about the music, then that stuff is irrelevant.

ok, this sounds more difficult to back up the more i say anything. but, i could say something like... errr... i think that bob marley made some good records but i can't divorce his music from stoopid stoners so i don't like bob marley records.

Laney, Wednesday, 29 January 2003 23:41 (twenty-three years ago)

well i do have to say that my fandom of Sleater-Kinney was given a shake when i found out that a large portion of their (melbourne) fanbase was macho idiots making a token concession to liking a 'girl band'.. not the band's fault, but.....

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 30 January 2003 00:03 (twenty-three years ago)

haha in auckland they're fan base was disturbing too. stupid punk girls slamdancing and smashing pint glasses on the stage. it hasn't shaken my fandom of s-k, but its def made me critical of "rg"

di smith (lucylurex), Thursday, 30 January 2003 01:24 (twenty-three years ago)

hey george i'm in christchurch!

duane, Thursday, 30 January 2003 01:45 (twenty-three years ago)

duane, isn't dan having a party in omaru ? same saturday night as two good ones in chch, which is a pity, as though these three crowds are all competing for the same people (unlike double booked gigs, where at least you can get out of one of them)

george gosset (gegoss), Thursday, 30 January 2003 10:02 (twenty-three years ago)

oamaru is da bomb.

it would have been nice if they'd left off the last seven tracks and put more bats and tall dwarfs on it (i love the videos to 'made up in blue' and 'turning brown and torn in two' respectively..)

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 3 May 2004 11:01 (twenty-two years ago)

they got the wrong subliminals, SF & JPSE & SKEPTICS ("Affco" = sexiest best NZ short film evah?) videos as well. still, the whole no-more-than-one-video-per-artist means that, y'know, OMG the renderers & bressa creeting cake & birds nest roys & the cakekitchen &c!!!

I'd be interested to read a complete videography for FN - I wonder if "Duane Eddy" had a video, &c&c&c.

etc, Tuesday, 4 May 2004 02:55 (twenty-two years ago)

rage has played stacks of old FN clips in the past, can't remember if i've seen any Clean but i've definitely seen at least 4 Bats videos from up-to-and-including law of things era

the surface noise (electricsound), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 03:12 (twenty-two years ago)

flyinf nun is like the worst label in the world now. i used to live for the days when my fnun newsletter would show up in the mailbox. it's cool to see the gordons rocking out in their cardigan sweaters. shayne carter's awful sweater is a treat too.

keith m (keithmcl), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 03:14 (twenty-two years ago)

i wish instead of arsing about with reissues (also, where's the Bird-Dog reissue you bastards?!) they could spend a little more time signing better bands, for which Pan Am and the D4 don't qualify

the surface noise (electricsound), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 03:21 (twenty-two years ago)

i won't rabbit on about my love for the early nun material (im a huge fan), but don't write off all material that's on nun these days, sure they're a major, but the mint chicks debut ep is SUPERB.. PanAm suck sure, and Hassellhoff Experiment are no longer around (they were ok..), i really dig the D4 (who are a great bunch of guys, and don't deserve to be written off just because they're rock'n'roll), HDU have made some top-notch mogwai type stuff (i prefer them to mogwai, in fact), Betchadupa are a bit kid-bop, but are fun live and improve with every release (they're barely out of their teens)..

chris andrews (fraew), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 03:38 (twenty-two years ago)

i do like the mint chicks. i heard HDU's first release and didn't like it at all, have they changed significantly since then? it just seems such a shame that they sign so few new bands. is there really that little out there? for better or worse, FN still has the highest international profile of any NZ label

the surface noise (electricsound), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 03:49 (twenty-two years ago)

yes, they did a complete turnaround within a single EP (working with Dale Cotton on the HDU++ remix ep), really its VERY good stuff.. even if the 'being junkies lines are true..

chris andrews (fraew), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 03:53 (twenty-two years ago)

essentially the best stuff at the moment is self-released or through small start-ups, though Arc Life was wonderful for a few years (Mike Hex - who helped run the label, also of Noseflute fame and the amazing bands Squirm, Whitey Hiss, Hiss Explosion etc etc died earlier in the year)

chris andrews (fraew), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 03:54 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, Higher++, Memento Mori & Fire Works (despite unhelpful sequencing) are v.different & much improved from earlier stuff. my DJ name was gonna be Heroin Dependency Unit, hur hur hur.

haha thee Nun have been pursuing a few bands who would rather remain independent (& considering that's happened to the Munt Chux, I'm not surprised).

etc, Tuesday, 4 May 2004 04:12 (twenty-two years ago)

what happened to em?

the surface noise (electricsound), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 04:15 (twenty-two years ago)

hey what do you mean?, they're doing ok - had a bit of exposure in england, been touring like little monkeys. They're a damn tight band, though i'd rather not comment on their manager [he pulled them out of a gig i was booking / promoting]

chris andrews (fraew), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 04:18 (twenty-two years ago)

j0hn b4ker (& jul14n) can eat my fuc. they were having some issues w/ when/where they could play, the whole having to sit on new material (the ant1-t1ger EP, etc); & they've been forced to jump through a few hoops that . . . hmmmn. & I'm vaguely wondering if they're not as good now as they were four-five months ago, tho that could be burnout.

at least they're not the ch3cks, haha.

etc, Tuesday, 4 May 2004 04:22 (twenty-two years ago)

(um chris, is the recent news/rumour about n1ck & the sh0cking p1nks "lineup" true?)

etc, Tuesday, 4 May 2004 04:24 (twenty-two years ago)

which part?, gimme an email and i'll fill you in on all the details

chris andrews (fraew), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 04:41 (twenty-two years ago)

in another bizarre coincidence, n1ck's just emailed me. thanx for the offer, though.

etc, Tuesday, 4 May 2004 05:30 (twenty-two years ago)

three months pass...
no more commentary on that dvd? it's great for the first hour/half, then trails off. witness the demise... with hdu as great last gasp (everyone overlooks "sum of the few" which was a BRILLIANT record imho and i am sad that my copy has disappeared; does someone want to burn it for me - it's out of print)
d.kilgour had great 60s-dylan hair in the clean video. shayne carter sports bad 80s mullets. it was very nice to see wayne elsey (rip). why were there no puddle videos?

jwd, Tuesday, 24 August 2004 12:51 (twenty-one years ago)

what is the video for dave the pimp like? a song about a mercenary who has invited girls to stick their hands in his pockets only he's taken the pockets out of his pants. i thought king loser's '76 comeback' was supposed to be the best video ever, how come it's not on there? i've never seen it.

keith m (keithmcl), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 01:08 (twenty-one years ago)

a 2nd edition is due out next month. hopefully with better selections..

oh and according to reliable sources, the toy love double cd IS a reality, and will be out soon with pretty much everything you could ever wish for concerning the band..

chris andrews (fraew), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 01:42 (twenty-one years ago)

"dave the pimp" has a great moment where graeme jefferies, in the midst of lipsyncing, bursts into gales of laughter. it's good.

jwd, Wednesday, 25 August 2004 02:13 (twenty-one years ago)

i love the wee interview bits with LBGP and the doublehappys vid.. but bring on the lesser seen videos!, according to bob scott the clean made 7 music vids all up, and of course theres affco, the scorched earth policy video, king loser, jpse and a ton of knox/tall dwarfs clips that NEVER see the light of day

chris andrews (fraew), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 02:37 (twenty-one years ago)

a skeptics video would be great. oh wait there is one on this dvd.

keith m (keithmcl), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 03:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Woah .. a Toy Love 2cd set? YES!!

Axemen! Bill Direen! Scorched Earth Policy & the Terminals! This Kind Of Punishment! wtf NRA & Drill! I think that Hasselhoff Experiment vid was one of the first instances of the Back Of The Y crew making something (also, Bad Santa, &c). finally "AFFCO" & "Beatnik"!

STILL the wrong JPSE video! tho "Flex" IS my favourite JPSE track*; hope the video's ok.

*the Straitjacket Fits cover of this (off Roger Sings The Hits is pretty great as well - anyone want me to gmail it to them?

etc, Saturday, 6 November 2004 03:03 (twenty-one years ago)

destroy the mint chicks. now. please please please.

It's great! And I'm very glad this is out because I was annoyed that the first DVD was missing a lot of tracks on it like, indeed, "Flex."

'the other's way' is becoming the most covered flying nun track.
love's uglu children's first single and ep had a lot of promise thent hey turned into a run of the mill 'punk' band, lost all of the swirl and menace.

Search Goblin Mix, the Exploding Budgies, Chug "Flowers"

it was all paul reid's fault!

nah prolly not.. but simon's been making good music since though. i dug the subliminals and sleepers union, though i dunno what he's gonna do now.. last time i talked to him he mentioned the possibility of doing another band with brendan moran (the subliminals / hassellhoff experiment), and was performing with dale cotton (conray)

Flying Nun Founder Regains Control Of Label

This is pretty good news, yes?

We should have called Suzie and Bobby (NickB), Wednesday, 23 December 2009 20:56 (sixteen years ago)

Hopefully, yes! Apparently with full control just using Warners for distro, tho there have been other reports saying Warners have some sort of other stake in it. Should clear the way for a nice reissuing project too (hopefully we'll get some vinyl)

Getting handed back the reins to an independent music company must be a bit of a poison chalice these days

badg, Thursday, 24 December 2009 00:27 (sixteen years ago)

yes and no. the brand still has value, despite all efforts to destroy it over the last fifteen years

happy christmas your ass (electricsound), Thursday, 24 December 2009 00:30 (sixteen years ago)

Great Christmas present this news. Seems weird for this to be happening with Chris Knox still out of action.

Anyone seen the reformed 3d's? Playing a few gigs in Jan/Feb and have already played the Merge show in the U.S How were they?

Hinklepicker, Saturday, 26 December 2009 05:18 (sixteen years ago)

Martin Phillipps has already expressed his hope that the Chills' back catalogue will now, finally, be properly reissued ...

ithappens, Monday, 28 December 2009 21:18 (sixteen years ago)

and if it isn't at least he can add roger shepherd to his list of mythical bogeymen that have held him back although really, roger shepherd is probably already on that list. i don't think this means much unless he knows better rocks to look under in new zealand for new and interesting artists/groups. releasing mediocre/awful end of career records by once great bands like the clean and the chills and the verlaines doesn't find me inspired.

keythhtyek, Monday, 28 December 2009 23:09 (sixteen years ago)

^that, basically

tacoma chameleon (electricsound), Monday, 28 December 2009 23:16 (sixteen years ago)

Skeptics doco looks great. I didn't like that Sharpie Crows 'Spread' tune so much but the new one Bully 4 You is wicked amazingness.

http://www.undertheradar.co.nz/music/1084/Bully-4-U.utr

Also check new Chills - no longer with F Nun I think but always with them anyway.

https://soundcloud.com/#firerecords/the-chills-molten-gold

Promising signs I think - hopefully Martin can get his stuff togethor to actually release a proper album. Everyone else is doing it - why can't he?

Hinklepicker, Monday, 5 August 2013 22:34 (twelve years ago)

Hinklepicker square otm here, only non Compilation Anthology track I really love is Platypus, but Art School/Hold Onto the Rail omissions are unforgivable.

Odditties version of Thums Off is p great imo though.

mookieproof, Wednesday, 15 January 2025 06:39 (one year ago)

Yea 3d’s are a wonderful band - Hellzapoppin & Venus Trail are both excellent and would be vying for a place in any ‘top FN ‘ list of mine. Especially great live - a beautifully monumental combo of ecstatic and unhinged. They have a Peel sessions ep thing coming out soon.
