we’ve read the diary of anne frank, we’ve listened to the music of neutral milk hotel,
wat
I don't know the context of that quote but it sounds like she wanted to do a Holocaust themed album and people said "NMH already did an album about Anne Frank" and she was like, "Yeah, I heard it. Doesn't mean I can't do one too."

The more I think about it, I think her m.o. is to adopt the model of limited-run boutique book publishers like Charnel House, etc. Gigs are more like "author events," keep 'em coming back for more.

Yeah, the most salient point afaic wasn't mentioned in that Gawker article.
"Ms. Palmer also said that she could not afford to pay the extra musicians she requests, a string quartet and three or four sax and brass players. The cost, she said, would be around $35,000 for all the tour dates."

I mean, her rebuttal has been ~entirely~ on the "what's wrong with community building?" and there is nothing wrong with that. The issue is just that she said she couldn't afford them, that she framed the hiring of local peeps under the guise of empty pockets.
I clicked through a couple of blog posts of hers just now to see if she'd made any such "I can't afford it claims" on her blog, and none existed, but man I have to admit her merch looks pretty stunning. Those numbers are totally false, still, but I get why people are blind to it. If I was a fan of her music I'd probably spring for a couple of those things
