That NYTimes David Byrne review is a mess. It reads like the dude came up with some zingers first ("His prose seems to have been translated from the Chinese.") then wrote the review around them. I mean, the Byrne book may be dull as dirt, but it's kind of a weak sauce criticism to suggest your money might be better spent on Talking Heads records. Well, yeah. Duh. Did the author expect the book to get up, grab a guitar and dance for him or something?

the byrne review reads like the editorials that my 70-year-old mentor used to write

so i'm totally into it

it probably says something about me, and something BAD, that earlier today i was happy to listen aloud to linda sharrock basically orgasming over sonny's guitar freakouts, but while later reminding myself of what that one dresden dolls song sounded like i made sure to turn down the volume so as to not be overheard by my flatmates.

'girl anachronism', i remembered quite liking it at the time and i guess i can still hear why, but too much baggage built up over the last ten years of amanda palmer's existence to enjoy it rly.

I wasn't meaning just here, just in general. It seems a bit much. yeah, she's kinda shitty, but this all seems a tad overblown everywhere.

can we at least laugh/marvel at the postcard chewing

What, you DON'T chew your postcards before sending them out?

Regional Tug (irrational), Tuesday, 18 September 2012 13:49 (thirteen years ago)

I imagine some of the cash goes to making sure they have change for the Coin Operated Boy. That might be in the 250k, I guess.

Biting proves that they're real.

how's life, Tuesday, 18 September 2012 13:51 (thirteen years ago)

the thing about that whole summary that kills me is how she's nonchalantly going "I made $6000 selling ppl trash I chewed on, this is the future for musicians" and she doesn't seem to get why other musicians might find it problematic that they'd have to make money that way instead of, you know, playing music

wtf where's my chapbook (DJP), Tuesday, 18 September 2012 13:53 (thirteen years ago)

I mean she sold TWO empty wine bottles for more than three times as much as a signed vinyl copy of her album APIECE

THE FUTURE OF MUSIC

http://www.317am.net/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/book-c-empty-wine-bottles1.jpg

Mr. Que, Tuesday, 18 September 2012 13:58 (thirteen years ago)

She does mention a few times that the amount she's actually made on her album at that point is $0.00 (possibly due to Albinism) - I can sort of understand her going "Hey, I don't know why and it could end at any point but I seem to be able to make some money thiiis way", and it's not really her fault that other musician's ability to make money is disappearing.

APART FROM this whole business with not paying for professional musicians, which is truly shitty.

Also the "David Byrne was paid in beer" is some epic-level point-missing, definitely a talent for engaging in the argument she wishes you were making.

he's a mystery, that david byrne

if only he had drank it, she could be selling david byrne's empty beer can

we’ve read the diary of anne frank, we’ve listened to the music of neutral milk hotel,

wat

I don't know the context of that quote but it sounds like she wanted to do a Holocaust themed album and people said "NMH already did an album about Anne Frank" and she was like, "Yeah, I heard it. Doesn't mean I can't do one too."

The more I think about it, I think her m.o. is to adopt the model of limited-run boutique book publishers like Charnel House, etc. Gigs are more like "author events," keep 'em coming back for more.
