Self-sufficiency is basically in opposition to the idea of some kind of social contract, no?
i don't think it has to be

She definitely works hard at seeming hard-working.
― Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Monday, 17 September 2012 20:03 (thirteen years ago)
i'm with albini on that i think. a lot of this stuff just seems needless and kinda gross. albini has never glutted the market with his own stuff too and i appreciate that.
x-post
― scott seward, Monday, 17 September 2012 20:03 (thirteen years ago)
if anything this whole conversation shows me that -- even amongst liberals -- the long-term effects of the right portraying the left as spoiled babies for many decades has affected how we view things to the point where we feel like anyone who espouses hard work or self-sufficiency might be right wing....
This may have been the most distressing aspect of this thread for me.
― EveningStar (Sund4r), Monday, 17 September 2012 20:05 (thirteen years ago)
and i don't want mitt obviously but it just seems like people go way out of their way to churn shit out that people don't really need. like, now more than ever. and frugal is a good word. back to frugality is a good movement to be a part of.
― scott seward, Monday, 17 September 2012 20:06 (thirteen years ago)
i can't believe steve albini has a latin signature. on his own message board.
― thomp, Monday, 17 September 2012 20:07 (thirteen years ago)
yeah there might something to that.
i think it's more an expectations thing -- after hearing that kind of talk as code for so long i mentally append "(so fuck you, die)" to the end of it
xp to sund4r
― goole, Monday, 17 September 2012 20:07 (thirteen years ago)
The only real difference is that Albini is arguing for frugality.
i don't think palmer getting grief because she spends a lot
― da croupier, Monday, 17 September 2012 20:08 (thirteen years ago)
I don't get this. Even the idea of a free market requires some kind of social contract. And equating the free market with self-sufficiency requires some fundamental assumptions.
I don't intend to turn this into a politics thread though.
― EveningStar (Sund4r), Monday, 17 September 2012 20:09 (thirteen years ago)
albini is from montana, right? they've got that whole live free or die thing too. he's entertaining even when being jerky. he's naturally jerky.
― scott seward, Monday, 17 September 2012 20:09 (thirteen years ago)
uh, i didn't say that steve is a libertarian (or conservative or a Ron Paul guy or w/e), just that the self-sufficiency über alles slant of that particular passage sounds like the kind of thing libertarians go for. jeez louise.
― i know your nuts hurt! who's laughing? (contenderizer), Monday, 17 September 2012 20:10 (thirteen years ago)
oh now you're going to slander louise too??
― the best Laid jams (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 17 September 2012 20:11 (thirteen years ago)
people are questioning her numbers, but only because she's claiming to be cash-poor re: on-stage assistance. if she was simply living wastefully, albini would likely slot her in with every major label band he takes to the bank when they want him to record them.
― da croupier, Monday, 17 September 2012 20:11 (thirteen years ago)
Most libertarian's politics are pretty self-focussed - give them a "get out of paying taxes" card and they'll melt away. But even if Steve Albini got everything he personally wants (and I get the impression he has?), he'll still have strong views on What You're Doing Wrong.

I just feel like frugality, self-sufficiency and hard work are all values that can be very individually beneficial. But it's NAGL when you start to judge other people's personal standards of frugality, self-sufficiency, or work.

i'm pretty sure that's all i'm going to be doing w/r/t romney.

It makes me annoyed b/c a statement so obviously tied to DIY punk aesthetics didn't seem to ring any bells. DIY is more than Beat Happening and Portlandia jokes, even if 21st-c. poptimism and Brooklyn neo-cons are working hard to make you feel otherwise. (I realize this is strawmanning but like jeez)

slight difference between judging the work ethic of somebody you're evaluating for a job vs. some random person.

― gesange der yuengling (crüt), Monday, 17 September 2012 20:19 (thirteen years ago)
just to be clear the ron paul Vibe that steve albini emits has less to do w/ the self-sufficiency thing and more to do with him being a nerdy engineering-obsessed skinny jean shorts-wearing white dude whos said and done some questionable things w/r/t women and ppl of color and named a band after a really gross anime character
― max, Monday, 17 September 2012 20:20 (thirteen years ago)

at least I don't wear jean shorts I guess
i just mean i dont want to get into an argument about whether or not naming yr band "rapeman" is misogynistic but i think we can all agree its "questionable"
― max, Monday, 17 September 2012 20:22 (thirteen years ago)
"some random person" is a weird way to describe a musical artist who publicizes and celebrates her economic model on the internet
― da croupier, Monday, 17 September 2012 20:22 (thirteen years ago)
named a band after a really gross anime character
Or in Ron Paul's case, a son.
― Andrew Farrell, Monday, 17 September 2012 20:22 (thirteen years ago)
also i think 'self-sufficiency' is a kind of gross phrase, sorry!
― max, Monday, 17 September 2012 20:23 (thirteen years ago)
albini def has done more than his fair share of baiting, cutesy devil's advocate bullshit but i give him points for showing more soul and sympathy as he's aged, even if he still clearly pats himself on the back for not tolerating fools.
― da croupier, Monday, 17 September 2012 20:24 (thirteen years ago)

just saying you cited rapeman seperately and and things he's SAID seperately, so just seemed like the "done" part came off as a bit more serious accusation

please consider this post my Official Apology to steve albini for implying that he is a weirdo racist who votes for ron paul, he is just a weirdo

only libertarians like noise music in which all instruments are self sufficient and independent from one another as well as statist concepts like tune, hook, melody, harmony, 'sounding good'
