if anything this whole conversation shows me that -- even amongst liberals -- the long-term effects of the right portraying the left as spoiled babies for many decades has affected how we view things to the point where we feel like anyone who espouses hard work or self-sufficiency might be right wing....

It's all relative. Palmer espouses self-sufficiency too in the form of freedom from a major label deal, and she seems pretty hardworking. The only real difference is that Albini is arguing for frugality. I think he sees that as a virtue in itself, so recordings shouldn't cost over $10k even if the person paying for it can afford it.

i'm with albini on that i think. a lot of this stuff just seems needless and kinda gross. albini has never glutted the market with his own stuff too and i appreciate that.

This may have been the most distressing aspect of this thread for me.

and i don't want mitt obviously but it just seems like people go way out of their way to churn shit out that people don't really need. like, now more than ever. and frugal is a good word. back to frugality is a good movement to be a part of.

I don't get this. Even the idea of a free market requires some kind of social contract. And equating the free market with self-sufficiency requires some fundamental assumptions.

I don't intend to turn this into a politics thread though.

albini is from montana, right? they've got that whole live free or die thing too. he's entertaining even when being jerky. he's naturally jerky.

people are questioning her numbers, but only because she's claiming to be cash-poor re: on-stage assistance. if she was simply living wastefully, albini would likely slot her in with every major label band he takes to the bank when they want him to record them.

Most libertarian's politics are pretty self-focussed - give them a "get out of paying taxes" card and they'll melt away. But even if Steve Albini got everything he personally wants (and I get the impression he has?), he'll still have strong views on What You're Doing Wrong.

I just feel like frugality, self-sufficiency and hard work are all values that can be very individually beneficial. But it's NAGL when you start to judge other people's personal standards of frugality, self-sufficiency, or work.

It makes me annoyed b/c a statement so obviously tied to DIY punk aesthetics didn't seem to ring any bells.
