well let's be fair, none of us are shareholders in Amanda Palmer Inc and therefore we shouldn't really EXPECT a detailed financial report detailing her budget and profits

this to me is pretty weird. I have a "staff" and "crew" (a tour manager, a manager, an accountant, a lawyer) - they get paid a percentage of what I take in and their pay comes off the top of tour receipts (or in the case of recording, either from an advance or out of my pocket); they're not on monthly retainer. they don't live in the house or anything. I sure as shit don't have a cook or a personal trainer or a weed sommelier.

I was explaining this to my roommate this morning and basically it's good that people are looking more closely at Kickstarter and Kickstatrer-funded projects. It's sort of crazy that "social pressure" is pretty much the only thing enforcing the 'Starters to actually follow through with what they promise. And it's interesting to sort of watch that play out in real time.

part of me really appreciates that Kickstarter seems to do absolutely no QC (beyond their guidelines [http://www.kickstarter.com/help/guidelines], which, if applied strictly could nix half the shit AP is pulling) -- just lets everything ride and shows what people will throw their money at.

1. Funding for projects only.

A project has a clear goal, like making an album, a book, or a work of art. A project will eventually be completed, and something will be produced by it. A project is not open-ended. Starting a business, for example, does not qualify as a project.

3. Prohibited uses:

No charity or cause funding.

Examples of prohibited use include raising money for the Red Cross, funding an awareness campaign, funding a scholarship, or promoting the donation of funds raised, or future profits, to a charity or cause.

No "fund my life" projects.

Examples include projects to pay tuition or bills, go on vacation, or buy a new camera.

This makes me think of those weird personal sites from the late 90s where (mostly) college girls would update with pictures of themselves and random thoughts, then lists of all the stuff they want and their creepy older "fans" would buy them the stuff.

I just started watching Parks & Recreation and binged on about 50 episodes in a row last night so I couldn't help reading Albini's lectures on self-sufficiency and fiscal responsibility in the voice of Ron Swanson.

On the part of the fans, I totally understand and sympathize with this impulse [to play for their favorite musician for free]. That's starkly different from a millionaire asking people to do things for free, under the guise that she is giving them something by indulging them. It's cheapness repainted as generosity and it's gross. Using people in this way, exploiting their good nature for one’s own benefit, is a cancer that taints many enterprises and it always reflects poorly on the exploiter. It's one of the things I hated most about the old-school record business, the practice of fucking with people who loved music so much they would put up with endless greed and abuse just to be a part of it. A new music business paradigm, if it is worth anything, should strive to be free of exploitation and be honest about its motives....
Nobody's an idiot, some ways of conducting business are just uglier and more exploitative than others.

I value self-sufficiency and its implied efficiency and economy very highly. This personality trait has enabled my bands to turn a profit on literally every tour we’ve ever undertaken, from the first road trip to Minneapolis in 1982 to the tour of Australia we’ll be starting a couple of weeks from now. It has also kept my business afloat while most other studios are failing, despite the relatively low rates we charge. It’s a sound and productive way to see the world, it has served me well and I don’t apologize for it. It’s also not unique to me. There is a whole culture of people who do things independently and efficiently, and it isn’t an accident that they have been at the vanguard of culture for decades.

i had already seen the power of twitter while touring…using twitter i’d gathered crowds of sometimes 200 fans with a DAY’S notice to come out and meet me in public spaces (parks, mostly) where i would play ukulele, sign, hug, take pictures, eat cake, and generally hang out and connect. this was especially helpful in the cities where we’d been unable to book all-ages gigs and there were crushed teenagers who were really grateful to have a shot at connecting with me & the community of amanda/dolls fans.
