Kickstarter is just, in most cases, a way to pre-sell your album. The good thing about Kickstarter projects is that they aren't open-ended. If you don't make the money in the allotted amount of time, then too bad. You get NOTHING.

The bad thing about Kickstarter is that the grassroots nature of it is being undermined by people using highly trained PR and marketing mercenaries to make sure the goals are reached, or by setting goals that are well beyond what the costs would/should actually be.

of the amanda palmer stories related itt, this getting fans to play for free thing actually seems the least bad (though that's not to say it's good, just compared to the ableist shit and the suicide-faking-and-reusing-on-record). it's not just the way she asked though, as people have said it's not like she's asking fans to be her full-time band for free, BUT it really sets off some massive and timely alarm bells about the expectation across too many industries of people being asked to donate their talents to get some nebulous unquantifiable non-money thing in return, like exposure or an experience or a platform. it's kind of like how i flinch when i see the word "volunteer" nowadays even though volunteering is a noble act to be encouraged - it's also exploited way too much for me to be comfortable with a scheme with it at its core

I have a long story about how insidious kickstarter really is that I can really only tell in person, but the short version is, there's a new state-of-the-art facility around here that has literally the most outrageous daily rates in the country, and when you hear the rate & flinch, they start explaining to you how kickstarter has revolutionized artists' ability to fund their projects, and you can have higher donors maybe come and watch you as you record, etc

So thanks to Kickstart, the cost of supplying a service shoots up, not just in response to increased demand by direct users of that service, but simply because the service provider is aware that Kickstart can be exploited to create a sense of financial assistance being required to pay for the service in question, which contributions would then indirectly supplement the overall demand, thus 'justifying', or at least making viable, the price rise. And given the willingness to play along by those who are less scrupulous &/or more desperate, they're right! Solely because of the existence of Kickstart. Talk about unintended consequences.

i don't think i can sum up how artistically gross and sort of tacky the whole thing seems to me in 140 characters

I always felt bad for my irrational dislike of Amanda Palmer - knowing that it's wrong to intensely dislike someone just because of their weird eyebrows.

I feel okay now that I have some sense that she is, to paraphrase Maura, PT Barnuming her way to stardom.

you know, it kind of occurred to me (brought to mind since AP mentioned losing money when her band had opened for Nine Inch Nails) -- don't other artists do this sort of thing, with different things you can order and deluxe packaging, outside of kickstarter? I mean, they do it with preorders as well. I know that Trent Reznor sold special versions of his movie soundtracks and/or albums and related stuff on his own site, apparently through a media promotion company, though.

So is it just that hiring someone would be considerably more than 5% (with a million dollar project, she could have spent $50k) or is using kickstarter just good promotion?

Amanda Palmer seems like the guest star on an episode of Law & Order where an art/music scenester is charged with murdering someone because they refused to understand her art.

right, but if they are taking pre-orders for a set amount of money, that means they're forced to stick to a budget when manufacturing their product (and come through with it). with kickstarter, it's all so nebulous and there is no contract or recourse for the people giving money.

I guess what I don't get is that past kickstarter, you still have to either set up your own fulfillment website for downloads and ship your items and all that jazz. If it's not your first go-round, I'd think there'd be easier ways to streamline the process.
