we did the tour, recorded it, all the Kickstarter supporters got what they signed up for. This was a year ago.

Does Yancey even have access to kickstarter from his yacht he's got from all these sweet proceeds?

ɥɯ ︵ (°□°) (mh), Friday, 14 September 2012 19:16 (thirteen years ago)

I have a long story about how insidious kickstarter really is that I can really only tell in person, but the short version is, there's a new state-of-the-art facility around here that has literally the most outrageous daily rates in the country, and when you hear the rate & flinch, they start explaining to you how kickstarter has revolutionized artists' ability to fund their projects, and you can have higher donors maybe come and watch you as you record, etc

I was just about to comment on how horrifying this is.

you don't have to respond to him, or you can just let him know you think it's tacky and gross. which it is.

probably not the best business model either. "don't worry, you can afford us. just ask strangers on the internet for some money."

i know your nuts hurt! who's laughing? (contenderizer), Friday, 14 September 2012 19:20 (thirteen years ago)

It's very intense - it's such an incredible facility, you see it and start to imagine all the possibilities. And then you find that you can get the room where they tracked Aja for half what they're asking. Consequently, no-one will ever record anything anybody cares about outside of super-niche audiences at this new place, most likely: it'll be vanity projects, bands with well-heeled backers (like swing revival stuff). It is a huge waste of half a decade's worth of construction and planning.

"don't worry, you can afford us. just ask strangers on the internet for some money."

this is literally what they say btw. "we cost ____." "whoa wow, even if we're bringing our own engineer?" "yeah people don't need record companies to get that kind of budget any more -- people are doing it for themselves."

kind of the apotheosis of gross Marin County venture capitalist style in a way, talking about what's a huge gouge as if it were some great new vision

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 14 September 2012 19:25 (thirteen years ago)

How do you guys feel this compares to Kristin Hersh. She has a similar funding model.

I think the point here isn't so much that using Kickstarter or soliciting donations from fans is a terrible way to fund your music; it's that Amanda Palmer seems to have grossly mismanaged her funds to the point where she can't hire musicians of the caliber she and her support act want for their tour, so she's asking people to play for free in some locations.

wtf where's my chapbook (DJP), Friday, 14 September 2012 19:26 (thirteen years ago)

What's ridiculous is that Kristin Hersh long ago figured out how to crowdfund her recordings in a much smarter, much more intimate and much more rewarding way for everyone involved, and as a result doesn't make a big THIS IS THE FUTURE deal out of it and doesn't take a ration of shit for it, either.

afaik Kristin has never said she needs to raise a million dollars for ONE album. Also, she has never tried to recruit musicians with hugs and beer.

Something about it does feel a bit off to me tbh but I can't put my finger on why. I think that's part of why this discussion is so engrossing to me.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Friday, 14 September 2012 19:31 (thirteen years ago)

I'm trying to work out whether it's just because it's new and unfamiliar.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Friday, 14 September 2012 19:31 (thirteen years ago)

also i think it makes a difference that her stuff is the subscription kind of crowdfunding, rather than a series of individual big-tcket projects on a crowdfunding platform that is, as someone said upthread, ostensibly for kickstarting stuff, not career maintenance.

Kickstarter is just, in most cases, a way to pre-sell your album. The good thing about Kickstarter projects is that they aren't open-ended. If you don't make the money in the allotted amount of time, then too bad. You get NOTHING.

The bad thing about Kickstarter is that the grassroots nature of it is being undermined by people using highly trained PR and marketing mercenaries to make sure the goals are reached, or by setting goals that are well beyond what the costs would/should actually be.

wtf where's my chapbook (DJP), Friday, 14 September 2012 19:42 (thirteen years ago)

of the amanda palmer stories related itt, this getting fans to play for free thing actually seems the least bad (though that's not to say it's good, just compared to the ableist shit and the suicide-faking-and-reusing-on-record). it's not just the way she asked though, as people have said it's not like she's asking fans to be her full-time band for free, BUT it really sets off some massive and timely alarm bells about the expectation across too many industries of people being asked to donate their talents to get some nebulous unquantifiable non-money thing in return, like exposure or an experience or a platform. it's kind of like how i flinch when i see the word "volunteer" nowadays even though volunteering is a noble act to be encouraged - it's also exploited way too much for me to be comfortable with a scheme with it at its core
