no chapbook?!?
no chapbook.

wtf where's my chapbook (DJP), Friday, 14 September 2012 16:07 (thirteen years ago)

Many xps.

@ sic. Yes, she does say it will cost $100 per unit for a 7" and arts-and-crafts package:

arts & crafts/7-inch packages, if we sell about 300 of them, adds about another $30k (we’re planning on spending roughly $100 each on the packaging for those, including not only the vinyl but the fun arts-and-crafts activities. oh, and postage/shipping x5)

Note: she says these are to SELL. As in, these are manufacturing costs, which will (I assume) be partially recouped.

@ everyone else.

The reason why I'm so interested in calling her out / making this right is because I do work as an amateur musician (i.e. not Union) and I hire amateur musicians. If you guys wanna make noise about Prefix hiring people at $0.01 a word I will happily support you in your anger.

Wait, I assumed we were all joking about Dingleberry Jam...?

you don't have to send a chapbook

thomp, Friday, 14 September 2012 16:09 (thirteen years ago)

Might as well have been called "Dingleberry Jam."

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 14 September 2012 16:10 (thirteen years ago)

Sund4r, this seemed pretty genuine, and was what I was responding to. Maybe I missed the joking part in Hurting's post, I dunno.

guys, these men called their album "dingleberry jam". These four...adult...men.

congratulations (n/a), Friday, 14 September 2012 16:12 (thirteen years ago)

Happily I ran into three musicians today who brought the AP thing up and they were using words like "batshit" and "insane" to describe the Kickstarter breakdown.

I mean, I don't know what else to say other than "I have put out records and sold them out of my living room and I know what this shit costs and this person is making up figures".

When is the last time you saw an art book priced at more than $120? I mean, what did you pay for your 1000-page Rem Koolhaus book?

Note: any time she mentions labour costs on her Kickstarter breakdown, the numbers seem low. So, there's that, too.

That song Brad Paisley is playing is called "Huckleberry Jam."

Well, shit, I guess if she knows her fans are willing to throw money at her, why not at this point? I think it kinda undercuts the whole kickstarter thing if someone starts to depend on it exclusively though. For me I get more excited about the brand new dudes with no name and no money that are trying to get their first project out into the world.

Yeah, man, too much Kickstarter does kind of spoil the premise. It's kickstarter, not Keepgoinger.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 14 September 2012 17:08 (thirteen years ago)

The thing that kinda bums me out about seeing these numbers is watching smart, talented, kickass people I know irl fail to get like the $8,000 they are looking for to do something worthwhile.

i'm really starting to despise kickstarter except when it acts as a pre-order for physical goods. i wonder how long people will keep giving money without getting rewards or solid evidence of completed projects before there is a backlash.

Hey Max, Owen Pallett irl doesn't really have anything to say "officially" other than what he posted on Amanda's tumblr. Please quote that as you like!

He did try and write you something else but it's just too touchy an issue for him to address officially and like he's got band practice in 10 minutes.

If you want to quote what user Ówen P has said here on Gawker, you can be my guest, but like, I don't mention any of your names outside this pool.

Sorry if it's a snarky response. I don't post anonymously here anymore because I wanted to stave off any temptations toward sock-puppeteering. But if my comments on ILM start becoming news, I'm gonna retreat back to the "OMG I love Carly Rae!" style of posting that I usually rock

I'm already scheming to make my career by pioneering the kickstarter fraud class action lawsuit.

do you need a website? I could do a Kickstarter to fund the server costs

wtf where's my chapbook (DJP), Friday, 14 September 2012 19:00 (thirteen years ago)

I have a long story about how insidious kickstarter really is that I can really only tell in person, but the short version is, there's a new state-of-the-art facility around here that has literally the most outrageous daily rates in the country, and when you hear the rate & flinch, they start explaining to you how kickstarter has revolutionized artists' ability to fund their projects, and you can have higher donors maybe come and watch you as you record, etc

v. depressing shit
