I asked earlier, because I have no idea how kickstarter works, but can it be set up to simply stop when it hits its stated goal?

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 14 September 2012 15:03 (thirteen years ago)

Kickstarter take 5% of all the money raised, they have no incentive to stop it.

DARING PRINCESS (DJP), Friday, 14 September 2012 15:17 (thirteen years ago)

I know that Kickstarter allows it, and why it does, I'm asking if they outright disallow limiting fundraising.

As stated above, it is the fact that this seems a little ambiguous that makes it interesting to discuss. I wasn't completely sure what I thought at first but it raises interesting questions about things that are important to me. I didn't know about the Animal Collective guy before: what he did sounds obviously worse than this but it's too obvious to be worth discussing.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Friday, 14 September 2012 15:28 (thirteen years ago)

tbh it's not so much that AnCo dude isn't worth discussing as much as it is the discussion is much more likely to be an echo chamber of "wow that sucks, what an asshole"

what he did should really be trumpeted to the heavens

DARING PRINCESS (DJP), Friday, 14 September 2012 15:41 (thirteen years ago)

I've also seen pretty much zero on it other than that one kickstarter page. Has anyone asked him about it? Any reputable sources looked into/reported on it? The whole thing seemed more like an obvious fake/con-job to me, I figured pitchfork or whoever looked into it and realized it wasn't him and just dismissed it.

otm, and I'm not sure I understand why its not. I mean, I've seen people kick around the "because AnCo are so beloved" thing, but that doesn't really hold water for me. I mean, there are plenty of blogs/sites out there that would be more than happy to take down a critical darling like them. Its just weird that this isn't getting more traction.

not sure why you'd assume that? the absence of a public response to smoke isn't a good indication that there's no fire.

OTM, actually, which also makes me wonder about the story. Like, why didn't I hear about this before?

EveningStar (Sund4r), Friday, 14 September 2012 15:48 (thirteen years ago)

Deakin did an interview with The Daily Texan in 2010 where he acknowledged the Kickstarter and said he was still working on the materials he promised. I can't go directly to the page because of web filters at my job but here's the text-only cache from Google:

otm, and I'm not sure I understand why its not.

Because Animal Collective fans are too chill and stoned to get all messed up about it, whereas Amanda Fucking Palmer fans are brash attention-seekers who speak their mind.

DARING PRINCESS (DJP), Friday, 14 September 2012 15:55 (thirteen years ago)

Also, wasn't the AC guy off the map for a while? He had nothing to do with "Dingleberry Jam" or whatever and "MPP," didn't tour behind them, didn't really do interviews, and the other AC guys iirc weren't terribly forthcoming about his activities or whereabouts.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 14 September 2012 15:56 (thirteen years ago)

xp no, that's an appropriate reaction

dude says "hey, give me $25K to go play a festival in Mali!"
fans say "that's fucking self-involved what with the suffering in the world"
dude says "hmmm, you're right; I'll go chronicle some suffering in Mali while I'm at the festival and deliver it to you as a chapbook (oh and I'll donate to a charity too)"
fans say "yesssssssssssssssssssss feed us with the pain of the less fortunate so we can feel like we are making a difference"
dude plays Mali, stops talking to fans, possibly enters rehab? <-- rumor
fans say "wtf where's my chapbook"

DARING PRINCESS (DJP), Friday, 14 September 2012 15:58 (thirteen years ago)

wtf where's my chapbook (DJP), Friday, 14 September 2012 16:07 (thirteen years ago)

Many xps.

@ sic. Yes, she does say it will cost $100 per unit for a 7" and arts-and-crafts package:

arts & crafts/7-inch packages, if we sell about 300 of them, adds about another $30k (we’re planning on spending roughly $100 each on the packaging for those, including not only the vinyl but the fun arts-and-crafts activities. oh, and postage/shipping x5)

Note: she says these are to SELL. As in, these are manufacturing costs, which will (I assume) be partially recouped.

@ everyone else.

The reason why I'm so interested in calling her out / making this right is because I do work as an amateur musician (i.e. not Union) and I hire amateur musicians. If you guys wanna make noise about Prefix hiring people at $0.01 a word I will happily support you in your anger.

Might as well have been called "Dingleberry Jam."

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 14 September 2012 16:10 (thirteen years ago)

Sund4r, this seemed pretty genuine, and was what I was responding to. Maybe I missed the joking part in Hurting's post, I dunno.
