man if you guys only knew how long this die donnergotter debate has been raging

well, you're right about the live version being more exciting, but the studio version remains compelling in some ways because of its stark production.

idk, with Chatham I used to make the obvious comparison to Branca, but the association can be misleading. the title and length and sense of melodic grandeur of Die Donnergotte all suggest similarities w/Branca's symphonies, but the actual guitarwork reminds me a lot of Ut and Mars and early Slovenly, and their dry, plinky riffs. the track's Neu influence is obvious, but take a listen to Ut's Conviction LP, or even this later track from In Gut's House. I mean, I can obviously hear in DD the droning, anthemic qualities that were passed on to Band of Susans, but I can also hear the skeletal riffs and atonal runs passed on to Ut (even though members of both bands may have injected some of those qualities into Chatham's work during their tenure). in other words, while I'm sure in a live setting DD delivers an imposing and choice wash of guitar noise, I can appreciate the studio version and its leaner, more angular sound that references no wave more explicitly, and consequently see the two versions as entirely different animals with different qualities.

but I have the feeling that I've probably said this to you about fifty times, so w/e, fuck it. everyone should own a copy of Guitar Trio, though (looking forward to hearing Chatham's half-hour versions that he's released).

I bought the LP of Die Donnergotter about 12 years ago and remember being tremendously disappointed. ("The fuck? This is jangle-rock!")

this is crazy. i bought an LP of the doner god like 20 years ago because it look cool & what. crushed my head then as it still does today.

Hellhouse, Friday, 14 September 2012 13:24 (thirteen years ago)

Someone called 'Sonic Ruth' voted (you will never guess what dominated the top of both her tracks n albums ballot).
No doubt Hüsker Drü will be voting soon followed by Jack Flag presumably.

"Die Donnergotter" does sound much better now, like good instrumental postpunk. Tbh, I think I wanted it to be more like Branca at the time. I still think that drum sound is very wrong. "Waterloo" is kind of lame though.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Friday, 14 September 2012 15:31 (thirteen years ago)

Now that I'm done with the Who I can give my full attention to these

first stop - albums

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 14 September 2012 15:40 (thirteen years ago)

thankfully there's no 80s Who albums on the list!

VOTE in the 1980's ROCK POLL PLEASE! (Algerian Goalkeeper), Friday, 14 September 2012 16:38 (thirteen years ago)

"Waterloo" is kind of lame though.

I'm guessing, but I think Chatham's early work with La Monte Young and Tony Conrad instilled a bias towards psych that Branca doesn't seem to share, and I would relate Waterloo No. 2 to that tendency. on the '87 Homestead LP, Waterloo is sandwiched between DD and Guitar Trio, and I can definitely hear a continuity in the distinctly visceral emphasis on rhythm and texture and repetition (as well as in the alternating currents of melancholy and exuberance that also differentiate Chatham from Branca). (I love Branca's work, btw.)

so Waterloo obviously isn't that far removed from Chatham's other work, but I can see how fans of dense guitarwork might hate it.

VOTE in the 1980's ROCK POLL PLEASE! (Algerian Goalkeeper), Sunday, 16 September 2012 03:07 (thirteen years ago)

I've got me lists honed down to 50. Should I be arsed to order them or just bomb the full unit in. Guide me please. It's sunday and I have a headache

Jessie Fer Ark (Mobbed Up Ping Pong Psychos), Sunday, 16 September 2012 10:13 (thirteen years ago)

You can do it any way you like.
There's ranking them 1-50 (weighted)
There's Split where you can rank a portion of your choice then have the remainder in any order
There's unweighted where they all get equal (51 points iirc).
But the latter option would mean those who vote for weighted albums will get more points for albums in the top part of their poll whilst yours dont.
Split seems to be the popular choice of many.

VOTE in the 1980's ROCK POLL PLEASE! (Algerian Goalkeeper), Sunday, 16 September 2012 11:02 (thirteen years ago)

I voted. Albums split, tracks unweighted.

Arvo Pärt Chimp (Neil S), Sunday, 16 September 2012 12:01 (thirteen years ago)

Weighted will certainly help to prevent ties

And with the deadline looming and some ballots to come this is your last chance to influence them by campaigning for your fave albums & tracks

VOTE in the 1980's ROCK POLL PLEASE! (Algerian Goalkeeper), Sunday, 16 September 2012 12:07 (thirteen years ago)

Would like to thank this poll for reminding me of just how much I love You're Living All Over Me.
Will have my tracks list done by the end of the day and hopefully my albums list too.

Grimes, Shoots & Leaves (Mr Andy M), Sunday, 16 September 2012 13:37 (thirteen years ago)

Awesome!

so Bitch Magnet are p great aren't they. I'd not heard them before.

Arvo Pärt Chimp (Neil S), Sunday, 16 September 2012 16:27 (thirteen years ago)

Indeed. I got those reissues for xmas last year.

VOTE in the 1980's ROCK POLL PLEASE! (Algerian Goalkeeper), Sunday, 16 September 2012 16:31 (thirteen years ago)

David Grubbs is one of those US indie rock guys who seem to have been in all sorts of good bands.

Arvo Pärt Chimp (Neil S), Sunday, 16 September 2012 16:33 (thirteen years ago)

Oh boy, I Don't Wanna Hear It by Minor Threat is pretty much off the charts in terms of the 'it rocks!' factor. Shame that In My Eyes didn't get nommed but hey, seeing as I didn't participate in that stage I can't really complain.
Going through the lists is turning into a bit of a nostalgia-fest for me as you've probably guessed.

Grimes, Shoots & Leaves (Mr Andy M), Sunday, 16 September 2012 16:42 (thirteen years ago)

I was totally unaware of all this stuff in the 1980s (born 73) I'm envious of those who had brothers and sisters. Since those who did all seem to have been introduced to music by them.

VOTE in the 1980's ROCK POLL PLEASE! (Algerian Goalkeeper), Sunday, 16 September 2012 16:44 (thirteen years ago)

Well I was born in 85, when I say nostalgia-fest I mean that the punky end of this stuff formed a big part of what I was listening to as a teen in the late 90s/early 2000s.

Grimes, Shoots & Leaves (Mr Andy M), Sunday, 16 September 2012 16:50 (thirteen years ago)

well, yeah, a lot of it I discovered early/mid 90s so I guess I can get nostalgic for that. However there are lots of old farts on ILM nostalgic for music they remember in the 80s (and 70s maybe 60s?)

VOTE in the 1980's ROCK POLL PLEASE! (Algerian Goalkeeper), Sunday, 16 September 2012 17:22 (thirteen years ago)

I'm an only child born in '70 and this was all I listened to in high school

vincent black shadow giallo (Edward III), Sunday, 16 September 2012 18:28 (thirteen years ago)

Just made my albums ballot. It's not possible to submit one ballot at a time, is it?

EveningStar (Sund4r), Sunday, 16 September 2012 19:10 (thirteen years ago)

I'm very proud of this ballot btw. (Also thinking that I might not want to listen to rock music from the 80s for another year or so.)

EveningStar (Sund4r), Sunday, 16 September 2012 19:13 (thirteen years ago)

yeah I think it's ok to submit one then the other. Most find it easier to do both though. Its up to you. Doesn't cause seandalai any more work afaik

VOTE in the 1980's ROCK POLL PLEASE! (Algerian Goalkeeper), Sunday, 16 September 2012 19:19 (thirteen years ago)

Albums ballot submitted.

Thanks. Please keep campaigning for albums though!

Are you all enjoying listening to stuff for the poll and discussing it?
