into the last week of voting we go

VOTE in the 1980's ROCK POLL PLEASE! (Algerian Goalkeeper), Thursday, 13 September 2012 00:43 (thirteen years ago)

Algerian-

to fill out the track playlist, I uploaded some local files, but I'm not sure if others can play them or not. Cop Shoot Cop were among the additions, if you could check. thx.

also, we have until the 27th for albums, right?

Hellhouse, Thursday, 13 September 2012 02:42 (thirteen years ago)

i'm glad you pointed that out, i'd assumed from the subject line that the whole thing closed on the 20th

tylerw, the creatorw (some dude), Thursday, 13 September 2012 03:02 (thirteen years ago)

No It might be the 20th it might be 24th 25th maybe 26th. It all depends on seandalai. It will not be as late as 27th.

but if I were you I'd assume both were finishing on the 20th just incase. I think its been a long enough time to vote and ballots are dropping off now.

hellhouse you seemed to remove stuff I added then added yourself. I cant see cop shoot cop.

VOTE in the 1980's ROCK POLL PLEASE! (Algerian Goalkeeper), Thursday, 13 September 2012 03:14 (thirteen years ago)

wtf does that even mean, christ

some dude, Thursday, 13 September 2012 03:20 (thirteen years ago)

I don't see any point in extending it and it just means more work for seandalai. better to get it all done and dusted so we can then look for album covers/spotify links.
I'm still not sure if Viceroy is going to be able to do the tracks rollout due to his work commitments.

VOTE in the 1980's ROCK POLL PLEASE! (Algerian Goalkeeper), Thursday, 13 September 2012 03:21 (thirteen years ago)

If we get a long list as usual then I want to start the albums on fri night after the tracks finish. So I am not sure if the 27th gives seandalai enough time to run the results through. if he can assure us then the 27th might be on but I'd much prefer everyone got them in by the 20th just incase. Remember seandalai is a very busy guy.

VOTE in the 1980's ROCK POLL PLEASE! (Algerian Goalkeeper), Thursday, 13 September 2012 03:25 (thirteen years ago)

ugh just pick a firm date and stick with. if an editor ever told me "it might be due the 13th, or maybe the 17th, we'll see" i would invariably managed to miss whatever the deadline turned out to be.

some dude, Thursday, 13 September 2012 03:32 (thirteen years ago)

that is why i said everyone should just aim for the 20th for both. Everybody who has sent in a tracks ballot so far has voted for albums at the same time. There's been a few albums only ballots but no tracks only ones.

VOTE in the 1980's ROCK POLL PLEASE! (Algerian Goalkeeper), Thursday, 13 September 2012 03:34 (thirteen years ago)

the top of the thread saying "Voting closes September 20 for tracks and approx September 27 for albums" is a bad idea, then

some dude, Thursday, 13 September 2012 03:35 (thirteen years ago)

well things have changed. I've had to do most of this by myself as others have been unavailable. originally there were 3 of us and seandalai is doing me a good turn and i do not want to cause him extra work.

VOTE in the 1980's ROCK POLL PLEASE! (Algerian Goalkeeper), Thursday, 13 September 2012 03:37 (thirteen years ago)

Why did I never listen to Locust Abortion Technician before now? (Answer: because of that stupid band name.)

I hope it blew your mind like it should do

VOTE in the 1980's ROCK POLL PLEASE! (Algerian Goalkeeper), Thursday, 13 September 2012 03:48 (thirteen years ago)

-AG:

my mistake. I was under the impression local files could be shared (apparently not). I only deleted and re-added tracks b/c I was fucking around w/adding local tracks.

Hellhouse, Thursday, 13 September 2012 04:01 (thirteen years ago)

yeah if others have the mp3s it will show up for them

VOTE in the 1980's ROCK POLL PLEASE! (Algerian Goalkeeper), Thursday, 13 September 2012 12:23 (thirteen years ago)

I don't mind what the deadline is, there's not really any extra work for me either way. I may not be able to produce the final results immediately as I'll be travelling but that's my problem.

atari era stylings of (seandalai), Thursday, 13 September 2012 12:30 (thirteen years ago)

I'd rather have the results ready to go then rather than extending the deadline.

VOTE in the 1980's ROCK POLL PLEASE! (Algerian Goalkeeper), Thursday, 13 September 2012 12:37 (thirteen years ago)

so please get your votes in!

EZ Snappin, Friday, 14 September 2012 00:09 (thirteen years ago)

most people have already voted, but I’m gonna take a few seconds to rep for Rhys Chatham’s “Die Donnergotter” anyway. Chatham essentially spends twenty minutes on a blown-out version of “Fur Immer”, layering six guitars over the forward slam of David Linton’s drumming for no-wave motorik sprawl. EIII claims it’s only good live, but this is a foul bag of fuck-filled challops. a thirteen-minute edit can be heard here.

the full version, along with “Guitar Trio” and Waterloo No. 2” from 1987’s Die Donnergotter LP can be found here.

There's a few people, who I hope will vote, who might be interested in that.

VOTE in the 1980's ROCK POLL PLEASE! (Algerian Goalkeeper), Friday, 14 September 2012 00:58 (thirteen years ago)

indeed. I will vote for it and send it barreling into the close with one vote.

Hellhouse, Friday, 14 September 2012 01:09 (thirteen years ago)

man if you guys only knew how long this die donnergotter debate has been raging

vincent black shadow giallo (Edward III), Friday, 14 September 2012 01:41 (thirteen years ago)

I bought the LP of Die Donnergotter about 12 years ago and remember being tremendously disappointed. ("The fuck? This is jangle-rock!") I'm looking forward to giving it another chance. I really liked Chatham's Crimson Grail.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Friday, 14 September 2012 02:24 (thirteen years ago)

Thanks for the link btw! Didn't mean to be ungrateful!

EveningStar (Sund4r), Friday, 14 September 2012 02:29 (thirteen years ago)

What's the story with the NWA album? I added to the spreadsheet because it's in the list at the top of the thread but did AG veto it?

atari era stylings of (seandalai), Friday, 14 September 2012 02:30 (thirteen years ago)

it's a prank, no matter what AG says, he really wants you to count the NWA votes

vincent black shadow giallo (Edward III), Friday, 14 September 2012 02:33 (thirteen years ago)

Long ago! in the noms thread! But somehow it was in the Spreadsheet i used to start the thread. I kept removing it from the google spreadsheet and the bugger kept reappearing and now I know why!
(ps did you get my last email?)

man if you guys only knew how long this die donnergotter debate has been raging

well, you're right about the live version being more exciting, but the studio version remains compelling in some ways because of its stark production.

idk, with Chatham I used to make the obvious comparison to Branca, but the association can be misleading. the title and length and sense of melodic grandeur of Die Donnergotte all suggest similarities w/Branca's symphonies, but the actual guitarwork reminds me a lot of Ut and Mars and early Slovenly, and their dry, plinky riffs. the track's Neu influence is obvious, but take a listen to Ut's Conviction LP, or even this later track from In Gut's House. I mean, I can obviously hear in DD the droning, anthemic qualities that were passed on to Band of Susans, but I can also hear the skeletal riffs and atonal runs passed on to Ut (even though members of both bands may have injected some of those qualities into Chatham's work during their tenure). in other words, while I'm sure in a live setting DD delivers an imposing and choice wash of guitar noise, I can appreciate the studio version and its leaner, more angular sound that references no wave more explicitly, and consequently see the two versions as entirely different animals with different qualities.

but I have the feeling that I've probably said this to you about fifty times, so w/e, fuck it. everyone should own a copy of Guitar Trio, though (looking forward to hearing Chatham's half-hour versions that he's released).

Hellhouse, Friday, 14 September 2012 03:38 (thirteen years ago)

I bought the LP of Die Donnergotter about 12 years ago and remember being tremendously disappointed. ("The fuck? This is jangle-rock!")

this is crazy. i bought an LP of the doner god like 20 years ago because it look cool & what. crushed my head then as it still does today.

Someone called 'Sonic Ruth' voted (you will never guess what dominated the top of both her tracks n albums ballot).
No doubt Hüsker Drü will be voting soon followed by Jack Flag presumably.

"Die Donnergotter" does sound much better now, like good instrumental postpunk. Tbh, I think I wanted it to be more like Branca at the time. I still think that drum sound is very wrong. "Waterloo" is kind of lame though.
