Yeah I'll buy that. Fking great harmonies...and I love how in that classic early Who style it's got lovely harmonies but that menacing drum/bass combo rolling along underneath to create a nice happy/angry contradiction

Power pop starts here.
― Lee626, Wednesday, 12 September 2012 20:23 (thirteen years ago)
OK. The last two are fairly obvious. Which will finish on top?
― kornrulez6969, Wednesday, 12 September 2012 20:25 (thirteen years ago)
I didn't vote for My Generation cuz yeah I'm sick of it. also every time I hear it I remember the anecdote about how Roger adopted the stuttering delivery as a joke on one of the engineers (who had a stutter) which just seems cruel

lol you're thinking of Bachman-Turner Overdrive dude
― some dude, Wednesday, 12 September 2012 20:25 (thirteen years ago)
man i REALLY hope ********** is #1 instead of * *** *** *** ***** *** *****

...*** ***** *** ***** *** ***** *** *****
― Faster than food (Myonga Vön Bontee), Wednesday, 12 September 2012 20:28 (thirteen years ago)
no I had a book as a kid that was called something like "The Stories Behind 100 Pop Hits" or something and it specifically told the story of how the stuttering take was a goof, something Daltrey sang to make fun of the engineer/studio assistant since there was some technical issue with Daltrey's playback, and then how the band was surprised when that was the take that actually ended up on the pressing. of course, this was in the days before the internet, so its entirely possible this was just some unsubstantiated rumor/hearsay that the author was drawing on. nevertheless, it's what I think of when I hear the tune.

Think it's bol, anyway
― Mark G, Wednesday, 12 September 2012 20:32 (thirteen years ago)
Nice innovation, some dude! Love the asterisk technique. And those are definitely the top 2.
― kornrulez6969, Wednesday, 12 September 2012 20:32 (thirteen years ago)
^^^^ now I'm thinking of Roger Daltrey telling Homer Simpson "These are all Grand Funk Railroad songs!" xpost

Shakey are you sure you're not thinking of Stutter Rap by Morris Minor and the Majors? (ducks)

I love em both, but voted * *** *** *** ***** *** ***** as my own #1. I'm really surprised ********** is this high. I'd be fine with it at #1, because it would be less predictable.
xpost: aha!

YES
― some dude, Wednesday, 12 September 2012 20:40 (thirteen years ago)
funny enough I was just writing prediction that my own #1 would take the top spot by miles and miles when tarfumes posted
― Dr X O'Skeleton, Wednesday, 12 September 2012 20:40 (thirteen years ago)
The barely controlled chaos of "I Can See for Miles" is one of my favorite things in all of music. A pop song on top, a world war underneath, with horses charging and bombs falling and at the end everything is in ruins.
― something of an astrological coup (tipsy mothra), Wednesday, 12 September 2012 20:41 (thirteen years ago)
i voted for both but #2 more out of a sense of duty 'well of COURSE it has to be in any list of Who songs' way and #1 in a 'fuck yes this song is so great' way
― some dude, Wednesday, 12 September 2012 20:41 (thirteen years ago)
You nailed it, tipsy.
― And Romney doesn't know what day it is... (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Wednesday, 12 September 2012 20:42 (thirteen years ago)
I must admit Substitute makes me a little uncomfortable because of the line about his dad being black. I realise the way it was intended but its just, well, of its time..
― Dr X O'Skeleton, Wednesday, 12 September 2012 20:43 (thirteen years ago)
yeah tipsy 100% otm
it really is a joy to listen to

ICSFM: I love the way Moon graffitis all over it
― Dr X O'Skeleton, Wednesday, 12 September 2012 20:45 (thirteen years ago)
"I Can See For Miles" might be my favorite Keith Moon studio performance. Other than that, tipsy pretty much nailed everything great about it.
― cwkiii, Wednesday, 12 September 2012 20:46 (thirteen years ago)
hahaha Schlitz rocks america lol
― set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 12 September 2012 20:46 (thirteen years ago)
there needs to be a genre of 'Songs that make you feel like you're flying'

OTM

This would be a great poll. No nominations thread, just vote!

I like this song and gave it a high vote, but not at all what I expected at #1
― Lee626, Wednesday, 12 September 2012 21:00 (thirteen years ago)
yeah me neither
― stop swearing and start windmilling (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 12 September 2012 21:02 (thirteen years ago)
it doesn't quite capture the range that they were capable of - at least, not as well as some of the other songs in the top 10
― stop swearing and start windmilling (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 12 September 2012 21:03 (thirteen years ago)
Many thanks for running this poll, Tarfumes. It's been an Amazing Journey that will always have a special place in the Tommy's Holiday Camp of my heart.
― kornrulez6969, Wednesday, 12 September 2012 21:08 (thirteen years ago)
i feel like this is the first time something somewhat unexpected topped one of these artist tracks polls that my reaction wasn't "OF COURSE ilm likes that song best, rmde"
― some dude, Wednesday, 12 September 2012 21:09 (thirteen years ago)
some dude otm. I actually like Substitute -- maybe not high enough for it to be #1 most representative Who track, but definitely not a challop placing at all.
― set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 12 September 2012 21:11 (thirteen years ago)
Was expecting 'Miles' to be #1 but this whole top 5 is awesome. Thanks, Tarfumes.
― Gavin, Leeds, Wednesday, 12 September 2012 21:12 (thirteen years ago)
I had a crush on a punkrock boy in my art class in 10th grade; I think 50% of the reason for my crush was that he had I WAS BORN WITH A PLASTIC SPOON IN MY MOUTH emblazoned in liquid paper on his pencil case <3 <3

And yeah Tarfumes I think we need to vote you in as official Who archivist of ILX. I thought myself a pretty big Who fan before the poll but I've learned SO much. This thread is a freaking goldmine of material.

TOTALLY, exemplary work all around, couldn't have asked for a better execution of this poll

Absolutely, nice work Tarfumes
― Dr X O'Skeleton, Wednesday, 12 September 2012 21:18 (thirteen years ago)
My number one was number one. This gives me the moral authority to shame you all for not voting for Doctor Jimmy, I've Had Enough, Dreaming from the Waist, Amazing Journey, Bellboy, and Guitar and Pen. Well, ok, there's no shame in not having voted for Guitar and Pen, it just blew away young teenage me at exactly the right time, even if the bass playing is a rare example of Entwistle completely screwing it all up.
― Three Word Username, Wednesday, 12 September 2012 21:19 (thirteen years ago)
also does it make any sense if i say TOO LOW at "A Quick One" being #5?
― some dude, Wednesday, 12 September 2012 21:20 (thirteen years ago)
Personally, I think y'all need to appreciate Tommy a little more. How could Sally Simpson and especially Go To The Mirror fail to chart?
― kornrulez6969, Wednesday, 12 September 2012 21:20 (thirteen years ago)
i feel like someday i will give Tommy its due. for the time being i'd rather listen to the Live At Leeds run through it.
