Am now totally engrossed in Pete's journals. Thanx Tarfumes

Another great piece of Pete writing: His Rolling Stone review of Meaty Beaty Big & Bouncy

Faster than food (Myonga Vön Bontee), Wednesday, 12 September 2012 19:19 (thirteen years ago)

I don't think I've ever seen a performance like the Rock n Roll circus. I have never tired of watching it

Dr X O'Skeleton, Wednesday, 12 September 2012 19:19 (thirteen years ago)

You know how in that Circus performance, where Pete hits the chords leading to the "'cello, 'cello" section and the crowd sort of spontaneously goes nuts? From there to the end is everything good and right about rock music.

The R&R Circus version just SLAYS. I heard that long before the studio version, and it was a big letdown.

Listening back to the studio one last night on headphones, i liked it alot! Except the ending, i think the vocals are a bit out of tune on all the post-Ivor stuff. And the "Dang! Dang!" should be much more powerful.

Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Wednesday, 12 September 2012 19:29 (thirteen years ago)

probably no relation but 'bohemian rhapsody' has always seemed to me to be built on the quick one template - harmony opening to relatively sentimental first section, second section both sinister and goofy, third section ROCKS. enjoy both, prefer quick one - tbh those chords leading into the 'cellocellocello' part alone would've guaranteed it a spot on my ballot.

balls, Wednesday, 12 September 2012 19:30 (thirteen years ago)

Too many wonderful moments to mention, but the bit where Keith chucks his floortom over his head, where he's singing along unmiked, Pete's "can't believe that I'm with you a-GAIN!", and dangdang and cellocello

Dr X O'Skeleton, Wednesday, 12 September 2012 19:37 (thirteen years ago)

"yr all forgiven!"

Mark G, Wednesday, 12 September 2012 19:41 (thirteen years ago)

xp I was just about to mention Keith in this performance. I've read somewhere Pete saying how much of a fan of the Who Keith was, and it really shows here.

Does anyone have a link to Pete's Meaty Beaty RS review? I've been hunting online since clemenza mentioned it yesterday but I cannae find it :(

I could've sworn his MBBB review was online at some point...I can't find it either.

xp to Keith as fan: Oh yeah. The blissing out and singing along at the end wasn't play acting, he was right fucking there. There's a holler right after that accompanies a monster fill, and it betrays everything.

Three Word Username, Wednesday, 12 September 2012 19:55 (thirteen years ago)

For book people, the Townshend MBBB piece is in the Clinton Heylin rock writing anthology.

Hungry4Ass, Wednesday, 12 September 2012 20:08 (thirteen years ago)

Very surprising results. I have no idea what 2 of the top 3 could possibly be.

Yeah I'll buy that. Fking great harmonies...and I love how in that classic early Who style it's got lovely harmonies but that menacing drum/bass combo rolling along underneath to create a nice happy/angry contradiction

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 12 September 2012 20:21 (thirteen years ago)

Power pop starts here.

Lee626, Wednesday, 12 September 2012 20:23 (thirteen years ago)

OK. The last two are fairly obvious. Which will finish on top?

kornrulez6969, Wednesday, 12 September 2012 20:25 (thirteen years ago)

I didn't vote for My Generation cuz yeah I'm sick of it. also every time I hear it I remember the anecdote about how Roger adopted the stuttering delivery as a joke on one of the engineers (who had a stutter) which just seems cruel

lol you're thinking of Bachman-Turner Overdrive dude

no I had a book as a kid that was called something like "The Stories Behind 100 Pop Hits" or something and it specifically told the story of how the stuttering take was a goof, something Daltrey sang to make fun of the engineer/studio assistant since there was some technical issue with Daltrey's playback, and then how the band was surprised when that was the take that actually ended up on the pressing. of course, this was in the days before the internet, so its entirely possible this was just some unsubstantiated rumor/hearsay that the author was drawing on. nevertheless, it's what I think of when I hear the tune.

Mark G, Wednesday, 12 September 2012 20:32 (thirteen years ago)

Nice innovation, some dude! Love the asterisk technique. And those are definitely the top 2.

YES

some dude, Wednesday, 12 September 2012 20:40 (thirteen years ago)

funny enough I was just writing prediction that my own #1 would take the top spot by miles and miles when tarfumes posted

Dr X O'Skeleton, Wednesday, 12 September 2012 20:40 (thirteen years ago)

The barely controlled chaos of "I Can See for Miles" is one of my favorite things in all of music. A pop song on top, a world war underneath, with horses charging and bombs falling and at the end everything is in ruins.

something of an astrological coup (tipsy mothra), Wednesday, 12 September 2012 20:41 (thirteen years ago)

i voted for both but #2 more out of a sense of duty 'well of COURSE it has to be in any list of Who songs' way and #1 in a 'fuck yes this song is so great' way

some dude, Wednesday, 12 September 2012 20:41 (thirteen years ago)

You nailed it, tipsy.
