You know how in that Circus performance, where Pete hits the chords leading to the "'cello, 'cello" section and the crowd sort of spontaneously goes nuts? From there to the end is everything good and right about rock music.

The R&R Circus version just SLAYS. I heard that long before the studio version, and it was a big letdown.

Listening back to the studio one last night on headphones, i liked it alot! Except the ending, i think the vocals are a bit out of tune on all the post-Ivor stuff. And the "Dang! Dang!" should be much more powerful.

probably no relation but 'bohemian rhapsody' has always seemed to me to be built on the quick one template - harmony opening to relatively sentimental first section, second section both sinister and goofy, third section ROCKS. enjoy both, prefer quick one - tbh those chords leading into the 'cellocellocello' part alone would've guaranteed it a spot on my ballot.

Too many wonderful moments to mention, but the bit where Keith chucks his floortom over his head, where he's singing along unmiked, Pete's "can't believe that I'm with you a-GAIN!", and dangdang and cellocello

xp I was just about to mention Keith in this performance. I've read somewhere Pete saying how much of a fan of the Who Keith was, and it really shows here.

Yeah I'll buy that. Fking great harmonies...and I love how in that classic early Who style it's got lovely harmonies but that menacing drum/bass combo rolling along underneath to create a nice happy/angry contradiction

no I had a book as a kid that was called something like "The Stories Behind 100 Pop Hits" or something and it specifically told the story of how the stuttering take was a goof, something Daltrey sang to make fun of the engineer/studio assistant since there was some technical issue with Daltrey's playback, and then how the band was surprised when that was the take that actually ended up on the pressing. of course, this was in the days before the internet, so its entirely possible this was just some unsubstantiated rumor/hearsay that the author was drawing on. nevertheless, it's what I think of when I hear the tune.
