OK. I mentioned lessons because he's doing more GIT/Berklee style stuff in the post-2000 stuff I've seen, some jazz modal playing and whammybar tricks -- but if anyone in rock music could teach himself that at home alone with a book, guitar, and computer, it'd be Pete.

I don't think all of the changes to his soloing are brilliant, but they're noticeable!

Three Word Username, Tuesday, 11 September 2012 17:26 (thirteen years ago)

Little love for these 2 tracks from me. 5.15 is too forced, though the bridge "inside outside" is nice. Other Quad tracks deserved much better.

Dr X O'Skeleton, Tuesday, 11 September 2012 17:29 (thirteen years ago)

I certainly hope that wasn't it for Quad!

Three Word Username, Tuesday, 11 September 2012 17:32 (thirteen years ago)

He's said his all-time favorite guitarist is Pat Martino, so I can see why he'd want to gravitate towards that style of playing. I'm not personally a fan of Martino's, but when that style is filtered through Pete, it gets pretty scary.

xp

YouTube link has Daltrey's vocals isolated with Keith's drums. VegemiteGrrl referenced it earlier; it's a fascinating/revelatory insight into Moon's approach.

"Eminence Front" is such a massive groove, i remember being so happy whenever it'd come on the radio during the graveyard shift at my old night job

some dude, Tuesday, 11 September 2012 17:46 (thirteen years ago)

x-post: ...and Martino is another guitarist who had to completely re-learn guitar as a grown-up. Wheels within wheels.

god I love Behind Blue Eyes.

if you didn't like or know the Who you might go, "oh wow this is a cool Peter Gabriel song"

never bothered to listen to it before and uh yeah my first thought was "hey this is a peter Gabriel song!"

I never heard "Eminence Front" on the radio till a coupla years after the fact...the single from It's Hard was "Athena". That was all my local AM stations played.

Faster than food (Myonga Vön Bontee), Tuesday, 11 September 2012 17:55 (thirteen years ago)

i only heard "Athena" for the first time while putting my ballot together for this! it's pretty good

some dude, Tuesday, 11 September 2012 17:56 (thirteen years ago)

Yeah, EF stuck around for the "classic rock" canon, even though "Athena" was a much bigger hit (#28 to EF's #68).

Eminence Front was all over MTV back in the day

regret not voting Behind Blue Eyes. the "when my fist clenches..." part is all time

gospodin simmel, Tuesday, 11 September 2012 18:07 (thirteen years ago)

unrelated - whenever I see interviews with Daltrey and Ox and Pete I'm always struck by how much genuine love they have for Moony.

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 11 September 2012 18:08 (thirteen years ago)

Definitely. Although, Pete had some snarky things to say about him in the Quad doc (including a hilarious imitation of his drumming).

I used to love BBE, but burned out on it in the 70s/80s. Burned out on all of Who's Next, really.

i thought for sure i'd be the only #1 vote for that one! i really just started to feel that song in my bones in a major way the last few years.

some dude, Tuesday, 11 September 2012 19:08 (thirteen years ago)

"Bargain" was my second highest Who's Next vote. I think it's my favorite Daltrey singing, especially on the bridge, but also on the chorus. & the drumming is, needless to say, tremendous, especially in the chorus.

Euler, Tuesday, 11 September 2012 19:28 (thirteen years ago)

The live version (in the YouTube link) was my #2. Just...fucking rampaging elephants.

haahha yeah I love that 'I saw ya' --- and isn't it Pete catching Moony trying to sing with them, when they didn't want him to?

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 11 September 2012 19:59 (thirteen years ago)

I voted for "Happy Jack" but for the Live at Leeds version; what a thumper

xp Yep, they were recording the backing vocals, but Moon kept fucking up (he sang backup on records a surprising number of times), so they made him sit out of sight in the control room. After they finally got through a take, he popped his head up, and then down again. Hence the "I saw ya!"

"Happy Jack" is something that would never fly these days, sort of like the Fugs "Dirty Old Man". So odd that a song about an old pervert would be a hit single. Great melody/buildup though! Terrific drumming, this is the kind of music Moon was made to play.

Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Tuesday, 11 September 2012 20:13 (thirteen years ago)

Beginning to lose hope that I Don't Mind will chart. It's all about the solo and the stabbing "I know, yes I know" bit

Dr X O'Skeleton, Tuesday, 11 September 2012 20:28 (thirteen years ago)

I kinda love the Hospitals' cover of "Happy Jack", which is the Who single with drums and distorted vocals on top of it. It's fantastic.

xxpost Bruneau -- really? I didn't think Happy Jack was about a pervert? I don't even get a creepy vibe from that song. It's just about a weird old man who sleeps on the beach that the kids make fun of. Unless I'm totally wrong.

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 11 September 2012 20:47 (thirteen years ago)

Yeah, that was my impression too (weird old dude, not a pervert). Townshend generally left the pervert portraiture to Entwistle.
