I've seen people use 224 vbr and even 192 in clubs for rips of scratchy-ass old detroit techno rarities
― the late great, Monday, 10 September 2012 03:04 (thirteen years ago)
isn't 320 sorta overkill when v0 achieve essentially the same thing in a smaller filesize?
― gwenguthrie gwen ross (Stevie D(eux)), Monday, 10 September 2012 03:06 (thirteen years ago)
Also I've had bad experiences ripping w/ iTunes :-/
i don't know if 320 is overkill but it seems to be defacto standard
― the late great, Monday, 10 September 2012 03:29 (thirteen years ago)
320 sounds *slightly* better to me than 256 and not any worse than 1411 wav so that's what i use
― the late great, Monday, 10 September 2012 03:30 (thirteen years ago)
I don't really know the nerdy technical specifications and all that, but I prefer to have 320 if at all possible.
― The Reverend, Monday, 10 September 2012 04:13 (thirteen years ago)
it just seems to be a sweet spot to my ears
― the late great, Monday, 10 September 2012 04:16 (thirteen years ago)
i'm tots fine with 192.
― fauxmarc, Monday, 10 September 2012 16:43 (thirteen years ago)
I was about to ask almost the same question as Stevie on another thread. For files I already have on my hard drive I'll play em in Traktor down to 192 but new stuff I'll always rip at 320. but I was curious whether most people use iTunes to encode or something different. I saw someone on a forum saying that using LAME to encode instead of iTunes made more of a quality difference than the bitrate but tbh I don't even know what LAME or EAC is, just a separate piece of software you get? anyone else think this makes a difference?
― dmr, Monday, 10 September 2012 17:22 (thirteen years ago)
I used to mainly DJ vinyl but lately I've been doing a bar gig that goes about 6 hours, usually by myself ... so have been leaning on Traktor more and more ... usually play about half vinyl, half mp3s.
― dmr, Monday, 10 September 2012 17:24 (thirteen years ago)
if you're ripping to v0 or 320, i very much doubt it matters what codec you use.
anyway:eaclamehydrogenaudio forums/knowledgebase
i can provide a 'recommended' eac config file if u want
― mookieproof, Monday, 10 September 2012 17:37 (thirteen years ago)
awesome, thanks. yeah I may email you to follow up
― dmr, Monday, 10 September 2012 17:40 (thirteen years ago)
Most everything of mine goes through iTunes, unless I digitize into Performer, then I save it as a WAV then use Max to convert to 196 or 320 depending on my mood and how much of a banger it is!
― dan selzer, Monday, 10 September 2012 18:52 (thirteen years ago)
i spins pure bangers
― the late great, Monday, 10 September 2012 18:58 (thirteen years ago)
320 or die
my tracks bang harder 320 and bang softly at 192
― the late great, Monday, 10 September 2012 18:59 (thirteen years ago)
320 is plenty
― RAP GAME MARiSSA MARCHANT (gr8080), Monday, 10 September 2012 19:21 (thirteen years ago)
fwiw some people say Traktor acts funny with VBR files. like it might have trouble beatgridding or calculating BPMs. I don't have enough VBR files to confirm or deny this.
― dmr, Monday, 10 September 2012 19:42 (thirteen years ago)
true!!
― the late great, Monday, 10 September 2012 19:45 (thirteen years ago)
not w/ every single one but sometimes it does
― the late great, Monday, 10 September 2012 19:46 (thirteen years ago)
if a program has trouble with a vbr mp3, the mp3 probably has missing or broken headers. i'm sure there are other methods but mp3 diags should be able to fix them, among other things
― mookieproof, Monday, 10 September 2012 19:54 (thirteen years ago)
24 bit FLAC, invest in a external drive and you're good to go.
― Josiah Alan, Monday, 10 September 2012 20:11 (thirteen years ago)
Except that a lot of promotional music only gets released as an MP3, so I still have tons of those.
I guess I just prefer FLAC when say ripping fairly clean vinyl.
― Josiah Alan, Monday, 10 September 2012 20:13 (thirteen years ago)
serato cant handle FLAC, p sure traktor cant either?
― RAP GAME MARiSSA MARCHANT (gr8080), Monday, 10 September 2012 20:25 (thirteen years ago)
Both Ableton and Traktor can use FLAC, I'm not really a Serato guy.
― Josiah Alan, Monday, 10 September 2012 20:34 (thirteen years ago)
If I was using Serato I would use AIFF files, because you can still tag those with artist names and other info.
I don't know why anyone would ever use WAVs.
― Josiah Alan, Monday, 10 September 2012 20:36 (thirteen years ago)
My ideal setup is have to have my files in Traktor tagged with BPM, genre and key signature. But then I am a nerd.
― Josiah Alan, Monday, 10 September 2012 20:39 (thirteen years ago)
at least you're not starring them
― the late great, Monday, 10 September 2012 20:46 (thirteen years ago)
key signature? really?
Whatever you do don't feed Ableton a bunch of 192s and expect it to sound wonderful if you change the tempo +/- 10 bpm.
Yes, really. It's not really that hard, you can used Mixed in Key to do it for you automatically. It costs like 20 bucks.
― Josiah Alan, Monday, 10 September 2012 20:48 (thirteen years ago)
i never try to mix in key, i'm impressed
― the late great, Monday, 10 September 2012 20:49 (thirteen years ago)
Good for mashups, if you're into that kind of thing.
― Josiah Alan, Monday, 10 September 2012 20:49 (thirteen years ago)
if it's too out of key i just slam it over
then again i do techno type stuff and not deep house
oh right, mashups, no i don't do that unless it's like w/ a dj tool
― the late great, Monday, 10 September 2012 20:50 (thirteen years ago)
Whoah, I just checked the price for Mixed In Key and its gone up significantly. Wonder why?
If you've got enough musical training you can do it by ear but I'm nowhere near that level myself.
― Josiah Alan, Monday, 10 September 2012 20:51 (thirteen years ago)
The people who blow my mind are Theo Parrish and co who do this all by ear, on the fly, using an isolator to pick out various parts of tracks.
― Josiah Alan, Monday, 10 September 2012 20:53 (thirteen years ago)
I had no idea how he was able to go from a jazz song to some hard techno in a single mix, until I realized that he was mixing harmonically.
oh no kidding, no i can't do this at all
i guess it helps to be a trained musician
― the late great, Monday, 10 September 2012 20:59 (thirteen years ago)
i can barely pick out whether a track is 110, 120 or 130 let alone hear what key its in.
What I really ought to do is set up a script that'll rip to both FLAC and MP3 simultaneously, seeing as I'm only ripping a small percentage of my CDs and not every single one of them
― gwenguthrie gwen ross (Stevie D(eux)), Monday, 10 September 2012 22:18 (thirteen years ago)
dmr: EAC is a CD ripper with some super crazy magic secure ripping mode that will not only let you know when a disc is scratched and has errors, but will reread the problem sectors until it gets a reliable (re: not-skippy) copy. It will often give you pristine rips of discs that skip in most other cd players, whereas iTunes will just blaze through them and give you garbled files
― gwenguthrie gwen ross (Stevie D(eux)), Monday, 10 September 2012 22:32 (thirteen years ago)
I do not have time to fully listen to every file I rip
― gwenguthrie gwen ross (Stevie D(eux)), Monday, 10 September 2012 22:33 (thirteen years ago)
when you play percussive bass / treble tracks at 192 really loud or 256 you get artifacts on the cymbals and shit but if its midrangey music (pop, etc) i think it sounds okay

Man I really need to get back into practice. All my talk of ideal situations aside my files are a mess right now.

strictly Strictly Rhythm
short, humble response to twitch's mix from a few months ago. one take direct to cassette. just grabbed some faves, tossed em on the bed behind me and went at it.
