DOING THIS
i think it's going to be pretty easy, tbh. the trick is to only vote for things you like.
― i know your nuts hurt! who's laughing? (contenderizer), Wednesday, 5 September 2012 18:57 (thirteen years ago)
did i not nominate fucking "right brigade"?!?
― i know your nuts hurt! who's laughing? (contenderizer), Wednesday, 5 September 2012 18:59 (thirteen years ago)
apparently i didn't. wtf, me?
but i did nominate the cosmic psychos "lost cause", which is approximately a billion times better than the only other cosmic psychos song nominated, but it's now to late to do anything about it, so boo fucking hoo.
― i know your nuts hurt! who's laughing? (contenderizer), Wednesday, 5 September 2012 19:05 (thirteen years ago)
should have checked the updates to make sure everything i nommed got included :(
yes you should have! Why didn't you?
― VOTE in the 1980's ROCK POLL PLEASE! (Algerian Goalkeeper), Wednesday, 5 September 2012 19:09 (thirteen years ago)
uh, i also nominated the lime spiders "out of control", which didn't get included in the list, though "weirdo libido" (nominated a few minutes later) did. fuck this. that's one of the tracks i was most looking forward to voting for.
― i know your nuts hurt! who's laughing? (contenderizer), Wednesday, 5 September 2012 19:13 (thirteen years ago)
cuz i've nominated tons of stuff for other polls over the years and haven't had to?
― i know your nuts hurt! who's laughing? (contenderizer), Wednesday, 5 September 2012 19:14 (thirteen years ago)
i mean, i only really blame myself, but i'm bummed nonetheless
at least it means you can cut the shortlist down easier?
― VOTE in the 1980's ROCK POLL PLEASE! (Algerian Goalkeeper), Wednesday, 5 September 2012 19:15 (thirteen years ago)

I was reading the Big Black chapter in Our Band Could Be Your Life this very morning. Nothing like some misanthropy to get your day off to a good start. Anyway, Atomizer and Songs About Fucking will both feature in my ballot, and so will Two Nuns and a Pack Mule (probably).

well this poll certainly made me dig out all my Husker Du albums again! Flip your Wig is still the best of them imo
― Michael B Higgins (Michael B), Thursday, 6 September 2012 20:27 (thirteen years ago)
Sometimes It can be my fave, as its the one I listen to most often these days. With Husker Du & Sonic Youth they have so many great albums ,that it does happen sometimes my current fave can change. I'm sure Some Dude's fave SY changes.

DN has been my default favorite probably since i first heard it. but my top 5 or top 10 has shuffled over time and has often been too close to call.
― IN REAL LIFE (some dude), Thursday, 6 September 2012 20:42 (thirteen years ago)
anyone here read 'try' by dennis cooper? the main protagonist is a sexually abused (by his two gay dads) teen called Ziggy who is obsessed with Husker Du and publishes a fanzine called "I Apologize". its quite disturbing but powerful.
― Michael B Higgins (Michael B), Thursday, 6 September 2012 20:45 (thirteen years ago)
got both my tracks and albums lists down to the mid 50s. having a really hard time pulling the trigger on the last few cuts though...

Aldo tell us how you cut your shortlist.
― VOTE in the 1980's ROCK POLL PLEASE! (Algerian Goalkeeper), Thursday, 6 September 2012 21:07 (thirteen years ago)
cut a lot of my favorites early on cuz i know i'd be the only one voting for them :(
― i know your nuts hurt! who's laughing? (contenderizer), Thursday, 6 September 2012 21:12 (thirteen years ago)
OK... I got them down under 100 by absolutely getting down to the things I would vote in top 10. Then pasted them into an Excel type programme (it was open office calc for me) starting in column b. Then I wrote in column a what number I would genuinely vote for them to be - in isolation, not with respect to anything else. Then sorted by column a and resorted then renumbered.
The end result was things I never would have thought of being cut got cut, but things I love ended up where they should have been. I'm actually pretty happy with how it ended up.
― passive-aggressive display name (aldo), Thursday, 6 September 2012 21:17 (thirteen years ago)

thinking about it. i'm already working in excel w multiple degree-of-affection columns, wouldn't hurt to add another...
― i know your nuts hurt! who's laughing? (contenderizer), Thursday, 6 September 2012 21:25 (thirteen years ago)
I have office and no idea how to use it other than keep a track of my monthly CC spending. Which I guess is more important but I'd like to be able to do more if ever needed.
― VOTE in the 1980's ROCK POLL PLEASE! (Algerian Goalkeeper), Thursday, 6 September 2012 21:28 (thirteen years ago)
Although do not post ballots/reveal placings please do talk about the albums so that you can help boost them and others check them out. That's the point of the poll!
― VOTE in the 1980's ROCK POLL PLEASE! (Algerian Goalkeeper), Thursday, 6 September 2012 21:32 (thirteen years ago)
putting aside the usual "pragmatic" considerations, why would you do this? my question springs less from naivete than curiosity about your take on voting this way.
― Hellhouse, Thursday, 6 September 2012 22:22 (thirteen years ago)
I'm interested in the perceived stakes in having a liked track place over having a loved one not.
― Hellhouse, Thursday, 6 September 2012 22:37 (thirteen years ago)
I suppose it's because they want to influence the poll rather than vote for something nobody else will and regret not having pushed something up several places by voting for it.
BUT THAT IS WHY YOU TALK ABOUT AND RECOMMEND ALBUMS ON HERE. Boostering works! You can't complain albums dont make it in the results if you didn't bother campaigning for them in this thread.
― VOTE in the 1980's ROCK POLL PLEASE! (Algerian Goalkeeper), Thursday, 6 September 2012 22:45 (thirteen years ago)
it's strictly pragmatic. i really love "candle opera" by claw hammer, even posted a video i made in the youtube thread, but i can't imagine that anyone else will vote for it no matter what i say or do. would rather devote a few points to something i genuinely like that could use the boost. "born too late", for instance...
― i know your nuts hurt! who's laughing? (contenderizer), Thursday, 6 September 2012 22:47 (thirteen years ago)
sure, but what's the fallout from voting for "candle opera" and having it place near the bottom?
― Hellhouse, Thursday, 6 September 2012 22:53 (thirteen years ago)
of course people want to influence the poll, but to what end? there are a few possible answers, but I'm looking for specifics.
xp
― Hellhouse, Thursday, 6 September 2012 23:03 (thirteen years ago)
Then everyone who has voted or is making their list needs to answer you.
― VOTE in the 1980's ROCK POLL PLEASE! (Algerian Goalkeeper), Thursday, 6 September 2012 23:05 (thirteen years ago)
no, it's not an inquisition. obviously no one needs to answer me. it's a very simple question about the perceived meaning (in the context of ILM) of having one of your noms on the final list. it's not a vast, unsolvable mystery, just a point of curiosity.
― Hellhouse, Thursday, 6 September 2012 23:29 (thirteen years ago)
well, a stone cast into a well that results in a slight change in ILM poll rankings can at least claim to have had an effect on the world. otherwise, it's nothing but the act of casting a stone into a well.
like, i probably wouldn't be typing these letters into a box unless i was fairly certain this message was gonna appear in this thread.
― i know your nuts hurt! who's laughing? (contenderizer), Thursday, 6 September 2012 23:36 (thirteen years ago)
I'm just interested in the divergence between attempting to be a tastemaker and accurately representing oneself. I mean, everyone is going to be able to publish their ballots at the end of the poll, so even a wildly thrown stone is going to have an effect.
― Hellhouse, Thursday, 6 September 2012 23:49 (thirteen years ago)

I'm not trying to troll you, btw, or single you out, so w/e. nbd.
― Hellhouse, Friday, 7 September 2012 00:06 (thirteen years ago)
I think, from previous polls experience, that some ILXors always regret not giving points to an album that finished lower down than expected. However if you vote for your favourites and campaign on these threads for them, you might find unexpected albums/tracks making it.Also remember that in previous polls I've gone beyond a top 100 (as long as enough people vote) so that these albums do do get in the rundown therefore voting for obscure favourites high up on your ballot combined with campaigning is not a pointless exercise after all. I always find the lower reaches of lists to be by far the most interesting. My polls are not about who wins but what less unknown/obscure/cult albums get in the lower reaches.
But obviously you can vote as you please. There is no set way. Just please vote and campaign on the thread for albums/tracks.
