Some of those acts you mention should be in the top half of the poll too. It should be an interesting mix results wise.

I suppose if some metal makes it; that would be the stuff you don't know?

VOTE in the 1980's ROCK POLL PLEASE! (Algerian Goalkeeper), Tuesday, 4 September 2012 16:06 (thirteen years ago)

wait aldo you don't mean literally 300 albums in your shortlist do you

Einstürzende Joebarton (Nilmar Honorato da Silva), Tuesday, 4 September 2012 16:07 (thirteen years ago)

he had 400 the other day. He cried buckets over cutting down from that.

VOTE in the 1980's ROCK POLL PLEASE! (Algerian Goalkeeper), Tuesday, 4 September 2012 16:07 (thirteen years ago)

oy vey

Einstürzende Joebarton (Nilmar Honorato da Silva), Tuesday, 4 September 2012 16:08 (thirteen years ago)

i reckon i have heard about 80 of those albums, but then most of those were recorded before i was born

Einstürzende Joebarton (Nilmar Honorato da Silva), Tuesday, 4 September 2012 16:13 (thirteen years ago)

They were all recorded after I was born but most of them I did not hear in the 80s.

VOTE in the 1980's ROCK POLL PLEASE! (Algerian Goalkeeper), Tuesday, 4 September 2012 16:16 (thirteen years ago)

(Also the channeling of TV/radio evangelists: "He knows all our needs. . ." I'm not going to lie, that makes me laugh.)

_Rudipherous_, Tuesday, 4 September 2012 16:23 (thirteen years ago)

yup, the only metal i know (apart from the very odd slayer and metallica track) is the NWOBHM stuff listed. i had about 250 albums and a similar number of tracks in my initial list that i had to whittle down to 50. i ended up getting completely obsessed with it and stayed up 'til 6am doing this. ha!

heh I knew which Ministry album would be your favourite.

indeed. it didn't get the no. 1 spot though.

stirmonster, Tuesday, 4 September 2012 16:24 (thirteen years ago)

I wonder if Dog Latin can find any 'Deconstructionist' Music in these nominations hehe. It does seem an 80s thing. Of course I do not have any knowledge of Jacques Derrida so have no idea really what DL's on about, but does NWW count?

VOTE in the 1980's ROCK POLL PLEASE! (Algerian Goalkeeper), Tuesday, 4 September 2012 16:26 (thirteen years ago)

stirmonster you and aldo really make me regret not doing the 100 votes (that is what we used in the all-time metal poll and I think last years jazz poll I ran was the same).
I didn't think there was enough nominations compared to previous polls so thought I'd be the only one who did a top 100. Oh well..

Yeah that Ministry album we're talking about, I checked it out because of you posting about it years and years ago on ILM. It was the only one I hadn't heard and it blew me away. it made me appreciate the direction they kept taking. Going a bit further each time; though I realise that was a less interesting direction for you.

VOTE in the 1980's ROCK POLL PLEASE! (Algerian Goalkeeper), Tuesday, 4 September 2012 16:30 (thirteen years ago)

well post the longer lists afterwards anyway

Einstürzende Joebarton (Nilmar Honorato da Silva), Tuesday, 4 September 2012 16:31 (thirteen years ago)

I don't understand deconstructionism (cue: "nobody understand deconstructionism" type joke), but I'm confident it's not whatever dog latin was talking about.

_Rudipherous_, Tuesday, 4 September 2012 16:32 (thirteen years ago)

I'm still stalling out in the middle of Kant's Critique of Pure Reason after all these years. I'm never going to make it.

_Rudipherous_, Tuesday, 4 September 2012 16:33 (thirteen years ago)

Recommend me music which reflects the paralogisms of pure reason.

_Rudipherous_, Tuesday, 4 September 2012 16:34 (thirteen years ago)

dog latin was posting about some imaginary genre-category he had dreamed up, while borrowing a name from a a totally different field that he admitted to never haing actually read about

it's part of the reason dog latin is and always will be one of the best ilm posters

Einstürzende Joebarton (Nilmar Honorato da Silva), Tuesday, 4 September 2012 16:35 (thirteen years ago)

cool! i LOVE the two albums that followed it but then lost interest.

stirmonster, Tuesday, 4 September 2012 16:45 (thirteen years ago)

yeah nothing to stop people posting their longlists after the results in the post your ballots thread. That is a highlight for a lot of people as they love checking out ballots so why not longlists?

ps stirmonster I have a reputation for doing large roll-outs (ie not restricted to 100 albums) because I believe that the smaller unknown albums lower down deserve their 15 mins. If I do a top 50 or a top 100 then post full results, that period in time during the run out where someone clicks the Spotify link is lost, as it wont happen to the same extent when just posting full lists. And certainly the discussion between the albums is lost too.
For me the order of results are irrelevant it's about introducing new music to ilxors who haven't heard it.
I love seeing the excitement of ilxors discovering great albums for the first time. That is job done for me. And I feel a longer rollout does that best. A lot of others like it too, those who dont and just want their taste confirmed in the consensus at the top of the poll can join in later.

Already on this thread I've seen excited posts about discovering Candlemass , Saint Vitus & Trouble. That is why I urge people to talk about bands and albums rather than just voting and waiting. Stan for those tracks and albums, it means others will check them out and probably give them a vote. I want to introduce people (inc myself!) to music I haven't heard. So lets share!

Isn't that the point?

VOTE in the 1980's ROCK POLL PLEASE! (Algerian Goalkeeper), Tuesday, 4 September 2012 16:45 (thirteen years ago)

Stirmonster It was Filth Pig where I lost interest. Dunno if it will sound better now (compared to what came after) but after the run of amazing albums they had, it sure pissed me off at the time.

VOTE in the 1980's ROCK POLL PLEASE! (Algerian Goalkeeper), Tuesday, 4 September 2012 16:46 (thirteen years ago)

ahh nakh, I didn't realise that's what it was. I remember Scritti Politti/Derrida discussions on early ILM and I thought that was what he was after. Not actual deconstruction rock music.
It was an interesting idea though so yes Dog Latin is a very valuable poster on ILM.

VOTE in the 1980's ROCK POLL PLEASE! (Algerian Goalkeeper), Tuesday, 4 September 2012 16:49 (thirteen years ago)

Still, there was a lot of really good music mentioned on it. I love any excuse to talk about Don Cab.

VOTE in the 1980's ROCK POLL PLEASE! (Algerian Goalkeeper), Tuesday, 4 September 2012 16:49 (thirteen years ago)

I voted, mostly for industrial and metal. But hey it's there.

Josiah Alan, Tuesday, 4 September 2012 17:03 (thirteen years ago)

Thank you! We want a good mix and those are bound to be under-represented genres, so that's great!

VOTE in the 1980's ROCK POLL PLEASE! (Algerian Goalkeeper), Tuesday, 4 September 2012 17:31 (thirteen years ago)

Interesting since I'd consider the 80s the worst decade for heavy rock if you don't include metal. I'd think this would be redundant to include metal, since that poll was already covered. I guess I'll put metal albums in my ballot otherwise I won't be able to come up with enough. Especially since a lot of what I'd choose are not on the ballot. My fault, I was consumed with my migration to database project and missed that whole thread. But here's what I'd have included:

Riot - Fire Down Under
Billy Squier – Don't Say No
Kreator – Terrible Certainty
Bad Brains - Quickness
Raven - All For One
Raven – Rock Till You Drop
More – Blood & Thunder
Raven - Wiped Out
Loudness – Law Of Devil’s Land
Overdrive – Swords and Axes
Tygers Of Pan Tang – Spellbound
Mudhoney - Mudhoney
UFO – The Wild, The Willing And The Innocent
Blue Oyster Cult - Fire Of Unknown Origin
Thin Lizzy - Renegades
UFO - Mechanix
Rainbow – Bent Out Of Shape
UFO – No Place To Run
Angel City – Dark Room
Thin Lizzy – Chinatown
Billy Squier – The Tale Of The Tape
Angel City – Face To Face
Kreator – Extreme Agression
Manowar – Hail To England
Manowar – Battle Hymns
Anvil – Metal On Metal
Whitesnake – Saints & Sinners
Accept – Restless And Wild
Anvil – Forged In Fire

But hey, at least there's Loverboy ;)

Chuck stole his log-in!

VOTE in the 1980's ROCK POLL PLEASE! (Algerian Goalkeeper), Tuesday, 4 September 2012 18:05 (thirteen years ago)

I am not offended! As I was eating lunch and blood resumed flowing to my brain, I realized this is not necessarily a heavy rock poll, just rock. I guess I'll have to reconsider my ballot, as I have a particular bias towards a lot of post-punk!

Fastnbulbous, Tuesday, 4 September 2012 19:09 (thirteen years ago)

I have tried to make clear to people it's not a metal poll since I know lots of people might assume it is because I run metal polls, but I don't want metal to be ignored. A nice good mix of great albums in many styles would be great!

VOTE in the 1980's ROCK POLL PLEASE! (Algerian Goalkeeper), Tuesday, 4 September 2012 19:39 (thirteen years ago)

"I'm on Heat " for this but am a "Shadow" of my former self when it comes to using my shitty Macbook. Is there an easy way to edit down? copy and paste in google and delete from there.
I'm a very thick man.

I blame it on a part of a brain that has forced the whole of it to listen to shit depressing music for thirty years plus

Jessie Fer Ark (Mobbed Up Ping Pong Psychos), Tuesday, 4 September 2012 20:42 (thirteen years ago)

I'm not sure what you're asking but you can copy & paste the nominations to notepad or whatever and work your way down the list and copy and paste albums or tracks you feel you want to vote for. And if you have more than 50 then delete the ones you might think aren't quite as important to vote foras others until you get down to 50.

Then you need to decide whether you want to order them
(weighted ballot) 1 -50 (do not put numbers on voting form)
(Unweighted ballot) just list 50 albums or tracks and give them all equal points
(split ballot) Rank some then have the rest given equal remaining points.

VOTE in the 1980's ROCK POLL PLEASE! (Algerian Goalkeeper), Tuesday, 4 September 2012 20:48 (thirteen years ago)

Yeah, with metal and post-punk, 80s weren't so bad, heh. A few missing things I was surprised at, like Buzzcocks, Gang Of Four, Comsat Angels, Magazine, Eleventh Dream Day, Chameleons, Hoodoo Gurus, Hunters & Collectors, and a couple albums by X and The Birthday Party, but otherwise pretty much covered.

Fastnbulbous, Tuesday, 4 September 2012 21:11 (thirteen years ago)

Comsat Angels are in there

VOTE in the 1980's ROCK POLL PLEASE! (Algerian Goalkeeper), Tuesday, 4 September 2012 21:13 (thirteen years ago)

The Comsat Angels - Sleep No More
The Comsat Angels - Waiting For A Miracle

were nominated

if you guys look on the husker du thread there are rumours about reissues.

VOTE in the 1980's ROCK POLL PLEASE! (Algerian Goalkeeper), Tuesday, 4 September 2012 23:28 (thirteen years ago)

Which should please some of you. There's lots of unreleased tracks in bootleg form so I hope they make it onto bonus discs. There's good demos around too.

I have about 10gb of live bootlegs so i dont really need anymore live material haha

VOTE in the 1980's ROCK POLL PLEASE! (Algerian Goalkeeper), Wednesday, 5 September 2012 17:46 (thirteen years ago)

Only by another 20 or so. Can't be done.

passive-aggressive display name (aldo), Wednesday, 5 September 2012 18:08 (thirteen years ago)

you can do it

VOTE in the 1980's ROCK POLL PLEASE! (Algerian Goalkeeper), Wednesday, 5 September 2012 18:14 (thirteen years ago)

i have.

mark e, Wednesday, 5 September 2012 18:52 (thirteen years ago)

DOING THIS

i think it's going to be pretty easy, tbh. the trick is to only vote for things you like.

i know your nuts hurt! who's laughing? (contenderizer), Wednesday, 5 September 2012 18:57 (thirteen years ago)

did i not nominate fucking "right brigade"?!?

i know your nuts hurt! who's laughing? (contenderizer), Wednesday, 5 September 2012 18:59 (thirteen years ago)

apparently i didn't. wtf, me?

but i did nominate the cosmic psychos "lost cause", which is approximately a billion times better than the only other cosmic psychos song nominated, but it's now to late to do anything about it, so boo fucking hoo.

i know your nuts hurt! who's laughing? (contenderizer), Wednesday, 5 September 2012 19:05 (thirteen years ago)

should have checked the updates to make sure everything i nommed got included :(

i know your nuts hurt! who's laughing? (contenderizer), Wednesday, 5 September 2012 19:05 (thirteen years ago)

yes you should have! Why didn't you?

VOTE in the 1980's ROCK POLL PLEASE! (Algerian Goalkeeper), Wednesday, 5 September 2012 19:09 (thirteen years ago)

uh, i also nominated the lime spiders "out of control", which didn't get included in the list, though "weirdo libido" (nominated a few minutes later) did. fuck this. that's one of the tracks i was most looking forward to voting for.

i know your nuts hurt! who's laughing? (contenderizer), Wednesday, 5 September 2012 19:13 (thirteen years ago)

cuz i've nominated tons of stuff for other polls over the years and haven't had to?

i know your nuts hurt! who's laughing? (contenderizer), Wednesday, 5 September 2012 19:14 (thirteen years ago)

i mean, i only really blame myself, but i'm bummed nonetheless

i know your nuts hurt! who's laughing? (contenderizer), Wednesday, 5 September 2012 19:14 (thirteen years ago)

at least it means you can cut the shortlist down easier?

VOTE in the 1980's ROCK POLL PLEASE! (Algerian Goalkeeper), Wednesday, 5 September 2012 19:15 (thirteen years ago)

and it's not like there aren't a ton of other tracks for me to vote for

lol yeah

i know your nuts hurt! who's laughing? (contenderizer), Wednesday, 5 September 2012 19:15 (thirteen years ago)
