I'm not sure that Dirty (prod. by Butch Vig) is all that much more hi-fi.
I listened to "Silver Rocket" and "100%" on headphones this morning. Right away, the drums and vocals sound clearer and crisper on "100%". Generally, higher frequency response seems better. Also, the individual parts are more clearly separated and spatialized.
If I were to put on a Sonic Youth album FOR the production, though, it would be Murray Street or possibly NYC Ghosts and Flowers. I'm not an audio expert btw.
I don't know the Butthole Surfers well at all. I was actually asking about them.
― EveningStar (Sund4r), Monday, 3 September 2012 16:02 (thirteen years ago)
They are great, but like Swans, people are split between early stuff and later 80s material. Unlike Swans though, most of the90s stuff is shit. Though I still like Independent Worm Saloon, but it wasn't as good as the preceding albums.
― VOTE in the 1980's ROCK POLL PLEASE! (Algerian Goalkeeper), Monday, 3 September 2012 16:19 (thirteen years ago)
As far as the tracks nominations go in general, there are several cases where my favorite song (sometimes the only song I like) by a particular band made the cut, so I'm happy with that. I won't be specific for the sake of not giving away ballot clues.
x-post: I am a lot more bugged by the Butthole Surfers's whole nihilistic/grotesque thing, but musically I rank them pretty high.

Dead Kennedys albums were added too already btw
I suggest everyone uses the google spreadsheets for their shortlists and voting

I don't think you forgot to nominate those Saint Vitus albums? I listened to Born Too Late early in the nomination process because it was nominated. I think it was even in the OP of the nominations thread?

I asked earlier about How about the Coil/Current 93/Nurse With Wound/Death In June/Young Gods/Swans/Foetus/Einsturzende Neubauten albums.
They were nominated by some so where's the discussion on them?Do they not feel ROCK enough to you guys?
I guess Swans have been discussed. I'll rep for Young Gods any day of the week. They were my 1st ever gig (with Laika supporting)
― VOTE in the 1980's ROCK POLL PLEASE! (Algerian Goalkeeper), Monday, 3 September 2012 16:43 (thirteen years ago)
(From Hairway to Steven) I wish Ricky had been nominated instead of Jimi. I guess I should have contributed to the noms list after all.
― _Rudipherous_, Monday, 3 September 2012 16:44 (thirteen years ago)
(Or I Saw an X-Ray for that matter.)
― _Rudipherous_, Monday, 3 September 2012 16:45 (thirteen years ago)
If I had a quid for everytime someone wishes they had nominated or voted.....
― VOTE in the 1980's ROCK POLL PLEASE! (Algerian Goalkeeper), Monday, 3 September 2012 16:46 (thirteen years ago)
Haha, I usually nominate even when I don't have much to contribute. I guess I've been moving away from that, but I might have to go back.
(Most of the guitar on most of Hairway to Steven is just--wow.)
― _Rudipherous_, Monday, 3 September 2012 16:49 (thirteen years ago)
Some complain nomination lists are too daunting due to length and others complain tracks/albums have been missed. It really is a no-win situation.
― VOTE in the 1980's ROCK POLL PLEASE! (Algerian Goalkeeper), Monday, 3 September 2012 16:50 (thirteen years ago)
i may try to temper my SST-heavy albums ballot by attempting to rank the hardest rocking albums at the top instead of my personal favorites (i.e. Sister over DN, Huevos over Up On The Sun, What Makes A Man Start Fires over Double Nickels) but i dunno, might be kind of silly.

it's not silly some dude. If its what you feel as the right thing to do. It's up to the individual on how they approach it.

I wish I'd nominated "Land speed record" so I could've cast a lone vote for it. (here's your quid)
― nedless summer (Ówen P.), Monday, 3 September 2012 17:12 (thirteen years ago)
I'm working through some stuff in order to make up as honest/thorough as possible of a ballot, and I have to say, Epicus Doomicus Metallicus by Candlemass kicks SERIOUS, SERIOUS ASS. "Demon's Gate"!
― Clarke B., Monday, 3 September 2012 17:19 (thirteen years ago)
AG, aside from Swans and Neubauten, I don't know the rest of those bands that well, although I've heard at least one track by all of them. I have one or two Young Gods albums but they're not from the 80s. I always hated Current 93 because of a good friend who was obsessed with them and would bring them up in virtually ever conversation. Mostly, what I remember about them is a weedy English guy saying "Hark, hark, the dogs do bark. Pain is on its way to town!" Also, "Where the Long Shadows Fall", which is kind of amusing in its ridiculousness for one listen. I should probably give them a real chance some day. Not sure if it will be before the voting deadline though.
I like Neubauten but generally find it tiring to listen to a whole album by them. They're another band I listened to a lot when I was 18.
― EveningStar (Sund4r), Monday, 3 September 2012 17:31 (thirteen years ago)
Arguably my fave metal album of all time.
― VOTE in the 1980's ROCK POLL PLEASE! (Algerian Goalkeeper), Monday, 3 September 2012 17:36 (thirteen years ago)
You will probably like Nightfall. The first album with Messiah and a lot of fans favourite album. 1st 4 are unimpeachable though.Do check out Trouble - Psalm 9 too.
― VOTE in the 1980's ROCK POLL PLEASE! (Algerian Goalkeeper), Monday, 3 September 2012 17:37 (thirteen years ago)
I've listened to Epicus... twice and it's probably already in my top 20 metal albums of all time! I had a good haul yesterday at the record store (someone had apparently unloaded a pretty good slew of CDs): this record, Nightfall, Morbid Angel's Blessed Are the Sick, Opeth's Deliverance, Death's Individual Thought Patterns, and Yob's Atma.
― Clarke B., Monday, 3 September 2012 17:42 (thirteen years ago)

lol
Trouble - Psalm 9 is as good as the Candlemass albums. As is Saint Vitus - Born Too late.

I thought so re: the haul, too; it happens sometimes... Ah yeah, I've loved Born Too Late since the first time I played it. Still need the first record and V.
― Clarke B., Monday, 3 September 2012 17:51 (thirteen years ago)
The new Vitus album is pretty great. Wino's 1st in nearly 20 years.

Candlemass's "Crystal Ball" is awesome!
― EveningStar (Sund4r), Monday, 3 September 2012 18:11 (thirteen years ago)
i get the feeling metal wont be anywhere near the dominant genre here but hopefully candlemass, vitus, trouble etc join the usual suspects like Slayer/Metallica et al in the poll.
I live in hope anyway. Check em out ladies & gentlemen!

Another lost classic metal band is Manilla Road. Slough Feg's big influence and viceroy is a big fan too. Just got another reissue of theirs on lp last week.

Wimps and posers leave the haul
― Gavin, Leeds, Monday, 3 September 2012 18:15 (thirteen years ago)
I've got my tracks ballot more or less sorted, need to whittle the LPs down. I usually find ranking tracks more difficult but I did this one by gut instinct.
― Gavin, Leeds, Monday, 3 September 2012 18:19 (thirteen years ago)
i get the feeling metal wont be anywhere near the dominant genre here
Are you expecting indie rock to dominate? I think metal and prog will probably be well-represented on my ballot. Nothingface will likely make the top 5.
― EveningStar (Sund4r), Monday, 3 September 2012 18:20 (thirteen years ago)
Straight-ahead punk rock and hardcore (excluding stuff like early emo or Fugazi or Husker Du) will get the least representation. I'm actually a little curious how that stuff will place.
― EveningStar (Sund4r), Monday, 3 September 2012 18:23 (thirteen years ago)
I'll vote for Crass and Nomeansno too. So maybe I'm making false distinctions. I'm thinking of, I dunno, Agent Orange or Social Distortion or 7 Seconds or something, none of whom I know well. Maybe they're all awesome.

ot, but listened to the whole buttholes catalog a few times recently and find that i like independent worm saloon a hell of a lot more now than i ever did back then. at the time, i objected to its slickness and accessibility, the way it ditched all the butthole's experimental and most of their oddball tendencies in favor of burly alt-nation metalpunk. funny thing is that i'd always wanted them to do a whole album of stuff like "human cannonball" and "fast". indie hypocrisy at its finest.
like so many albums of the early CD era, it's way too long, but the best tracks are fucking great, and it's definitely leary's best showcase as blues rock guitarist. "the wooden song"! and it's great to finally have a studio version of "strawberry". would definitely vote for it in a 90s version of this poll.

― i know your nuts hurt! who's laughing? (contenderizer), Monday, 3 September 2012 18:29 (thirteen years ago)
It's hard to say but yeah I expect indie rock like SY/The Cure/REM etc to be top 10. So top half it will dominate . Metal and hardcore might do best in the lower reaches. Can see a lot of it there. The length of the list depends on how many ballots we get.
Will be interesting to see if the Foetus/Death In June/Coil/Current 93/EN type voters show up. So far I dont see any of it showing up judging by participants in the poll and I get the feeling fans of those bands wont click on the thread "oh its just rock indie or metal"
Maybe if some of us revived threads on those bands it might help?Still, you cant force anyone to open threads. I'm sure there's a lot of poll fatigue around.
Still think we will get good results and the more who vote the better they will be, especially fans of those smaller cult lesser known/talked about bands.
I did post on the foetus thread alerting them.

but my idea of "pop" and "fast" may be nonstandard
― i know your nuts hurt! who's laughing? (contenderizer), Monday, 3 September 2012 18:30 (thirteen years ago)
We'll both vote for "The Tower" though so it's all good.
2xpost It would be very funny if REM topped this poll.
― EveningStar (Sund4r), Monday, 3 September 2012 18:31 (thirteen years ago)
would definitely vote for it in a 90s version of this poll.
Maybe in spring I will consider that. 90s is my era though so It would be murder to even cut a shortlist to 100.
― VOTE in the 1980's ROCK POLL PLEASE! (Algerian Goalkeeper), Monday, 3 September 2012 18:32 (thirteen years ago)
I havent seen the ballots so have no idea what it looks like but i fully expect Daydream nation/Pornography/Isnt Anything to be the top 3. Dunno bout order though.
But who knows!!! That's why it's important everyone votes.

I'll feel a little ill if the the Cure makes the top 10 of this poll.
― EveningStar (Sund4r), Monday, 3 September 2012 18:34 (thirteen years ago)
*the Cure
would be lols if someone like the butthole surfers or Big Black or bad Brains won. I would approve if they did haha

Tracks I have no fucking idea
like so many albums of the early CD era, it's way too long, but the best tracks are fucking great
I like how "Alcohol" still ends up sounding like LSD.
― _Rudipherous_, Monday, 3 September 2012 18:40 (thirteen years ago)
I dragged my feet getting around to listening to the Butthole Surfers. I was just annoyed by the name and graphics at the time (not sure why I singled them out in particular since there were plenty of other bands I listened to with a similar image). Even when I heard tracks I liked, I didn't follow up; and then even after I saw them live and liked it (probably around 90/91), I still took my time. Then I listened to them a whole bunch in 92-93/4. (In some ways that's the point where I definitively cut down on listening to rock of any sort (not out of principle, just disinterest), so until pretty recently--mid-last-decade--they were the last rock band I got into in a big way.)
