Daniel Taylor - "M.O.R.D. (Loco Dice Remix)"

Tim F, Sunday, 2 September 2012 23:23 (eleven years ago) link

His best tune alongside the son of raw remix.

Tim F, Sunday, 2 September 2012 23:23 (eleven years ago) link

why yes tim, they are, that's why i was listening to so much radio slave at the time

the late great, Sunday, 2 September 2012 23:27 (eleven years ago) link

Not a criticism! It just struck me seeing them listed together like that.

Obv long ass was a minimal m.o. at the time.

Tim F, Sunday, 2 September 2012 23:28 (eleven years ago) link

We should do a POX of funky percussive minimal (a la Dinky's "Horizontal") and other techno for Rev.

Tim F, Monday, 3 September 2012 01:02 (eleven years ago) link

good life (luciano)

not so much minimal anymore as shading into rainforest maximal

he would like safari (holden) i bet

the late great, Monday, 3 September 2012 01:07 (eleven years ago) link

as well as houle's "bay of figs", son of raw, luciano's "good life" and misc. "ballet"

the late great, Monday, 3 September 2012 01:11 (eleven years ago) link

Is the "on and on" Guido Schneider remix too dry? Amazing percussion on that.

Schneider releasing a tune called "As Dry As I Can Be" was a great guilty lol of minimal.

Tim F, Monday, 3 September 2012 01:11 (eleven years ago) link

Dunno about Houle, he's pretty rigid for rev's tastes? Like I get that he's funky in a techno sense but I think you need to have already internalized
machine beats to view him that way?

Tim F, Monday, 3 September 2012 01:13 (eleven years ago) link

Curious to know what techno post oh 2007 (that's not actually like industrial post-dubstep or something, though that too I guess) people think fit into this category.

Tim F, Monday, 3 September 2012 01:16 (eleven years ago) link

rev likes mike q?

the late great, Monday, 3 September 2012 02:15 (eleven years ago) link

ballroom rigidity is different to techno rigidity though, there's still that snare-heavy stepping vibe however muscularised.

Tim F, Monday, 3 September 2012 02:26 (eleven years ago) link

First person to spring to my mind is S Max who always had a more loose syncopated feel, than much of the mid-00 crossover house/techno sound.

http://www.discogs.com/S-Max-Lovebombing-EP/release/1109518

Since 2007 he's been leaning more towards that post-dubstep techno sound: http://soundcloud.com/wholemeal-music/s-max-promo (a mix, but with plenty of his own stuff)

Chewshabadoo, Monday, 3 September 2012 09:04 (eleven years ago) link

Rev was the first person to introduce me to Mike Q.

I've had 'Solitary Flight' on a loop (on my stereo and in my head) all weekend. However the only version I seem to be able to find sounds like it was recorded in a bin. Is this normal?

This Is... The Police (dog latin), Monday, 3 September 2012 09:28 (eleven years ago) link

LOL, well I think you've nailed the Detroit House sound. That style always sounds great on a club sound system though.

Chewshabadoo, Monday, 3 September 2012 09:57 (eleven years ago) link

It should sound like this anyway:

Chewshabadoo, Monday, 3 September 2012 09:58 (eleven years ago) link

dog latin - is it better than 192 kbps?

tim what about BRUTALga square?

the late great, Monday, 3 September 2012 20:04 (eleven years ago) link

LOL ask Rev but I think not.

Tim F, Monday, 3 September 2012 20:49 (eleven years ago) link

I think something more like this:

Tim F, Monday, 3 September 2012 20:58 (eleven years ago) link

Or maybe something like this:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OniHSXEH230

Tim F, Monday, 3 September 2012 21:02 (eleven years ago) link

Maybe we should start a separate thread for this - not just for Rev but to explore this line of reasoning.

Tim F, Monday, 3 September 2012 21:08 (eleven years ago) link

i'm confused about what this strand we're looking for is...

Know how Roo feel (LocalGarda), Monday, 3 September 2012 21:19 (eleven years ago) link

but, as ever, an excuse to post youtubes of yore is hardly needed

Know how Roo feel (LocalGarda), Monday, 3 September 2012 21:19 (eleven years ago) link

we're looking for funky, bass-heavy, percussive minimalĀ tracks with a "take you on a journey" vibe that are slightly inferior to but approaching the quality of radio slave, particularly the ones tim and rev hate

the late great, Monday, 3 September 2012 21:23 (eleven years ago) link

haha nice try vahid:

(a) I don't think they need to be "take you on a journey"

(b) I love Radio Slave but I don't think Rev would at all

Basically Ronan, Rev thinks he doesn't like techno/tech-house/minimal, but gets with house and uk funky and post-dubstep and etc. and is always talking about how he likes grooves that are primarily driven by percussion (rather than, say, arpeggios). So I was brainstorming tunes I think he would like, esp. after he loved Dinky's "Horizontal" (but didn't care for Metope's "Selvsyn") which I posted upthread.

Tim F, Monday, 3 September 2012 21:29 (eleven years ago) link

minimal tracks with a "take you on a journey" vibe that are slightly inferior to but approaching the quality of radio slave

at what point did you think this was about you, anyway?

Tim F, Monday, 3 September 2012 21:30 (eleven years ago) link

this is the first thing i think of, hasn't aged well, used to love this though, it's a eulberg remix, not labelled that clearly here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DGUehbxH-cw

actually listening through i'm enjoying it still.

Know how Roo feel (LocalGarda), Monday, 3 September 2012 21:33 (eleven years ago) link

another one... the secret "gehts noch?"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zWe744c6YFo

Know how Roo feel (LocalGarda), Monday, 3 September 2012 21:36 (eleven years ago) link

god that used to go down so well in clubs.

Know how Roo feel (LocalGarda), Monday, 3 September 2012 21:37 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah I was trying to think of an appropriate Eulberg tune too. That one's great! Not certain if I've heard it before. Possibly too boshing for Rev (I think he might turn his nose up at anything with big tearing bass riffs, but perhaps not), I'm not sure.

Meanwhile MikoMcha here's the Luciano Live @ Silo, Belgium mix:

http://www.sendspace.com/file/3od2xm

I will also upload the Krystal Bucharest live set shortly as I always think of that as "part 2" to this.

Tim F, Monday, 3 September 2012 21:40 (eleven years ago) link

always all about me tim, solipsism get into it

the late great, Monday, 3 September 2012 21:41 (eleven years ago) link

this attempt to blow rev's mind has sparked quite the discussion. only half joking. being reminded of some good things i overlooked then because it was often just off what i wanted to hear. did enjoy a bit of matthew jonson at the time, but the only one i return to is the speicher mentioned above (not by name tho) "dirt road and the boat from soundwave" with the mole. so fantastic still, and one i can't believe i didn't vote for. probably place high if i was to vote again today.

interesting list, wish there were a few more big room type joints in it tho

my fav jacques lu cont is def his gwen stefani remix, surprised that didnt get a mention. and my mindgarden favorite is his remix of "sex & sun" but im kinda lonely on that one

i think this is much better than prototype
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OfHNuoTqFug

Dancing in Chicago gave me v different experiences than this, the 2000s would have been all about dennis ferrer and instead of that mark e edit it would be an edit of bill withers "Harlem" and there's no WAY "Mirror Dance" wouldn't be there, or this white label of natalie cole:

Yeah, I was actually quite surprised that Prototype placed instead of the (in my opinion FAR superior) I look into Mid-Air

formerly EDB (ed.b), Tuesday, 4 September 2012 07:56 (eleven years ago) link

Frequency > Prototype too

itt: i forgot that he yells at a butt (sic), Tuesday, 4 September 2012 07:58 (eleven years ago) link

my Kompakt choices would be v different from the ones that made it probably. i think the ultimate Superpitcher is "Heroin," i like him at his most enervated

The rain in Spin circles mainly on the mansplain (D-40), Tuesday, 4 September 2012 08:03 (eleven years ago) link

theres also a whole circle of cheesier club classics that i think i associate more w/ when i went out dancing ... green velvet's "shake & pop", Classixx "i'll get you," simian mobile disco's "it's the beat" (i preferred "I Believe" but at the time "It's the Beat" was the bigger club song)

The rain in Spin circles mainly on the mansplain (D-40), Tuesday, 4 September 2012 08:23 (eleven years ago) link

thing is, w/ all this stuff i was getting into old stuff at the same time. so a track like
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_5XS1CZV9w4

might as well have been 'new' or like a Still Going joint to me.

The rain in Spin circles mainly on the mansplain (D-40), Tuesday, 4 September 2012 08:29 (eleven years ago) link

oh yeah roisin murphy's "let me know" would have to make it !

The rain in Spin circles mainly on the mansplain (D-40), Tuesday, 4 September 2012 08:30 (eleven years ago) link

oh well sorry for monday morning quarterbacking

The rain in Spin circles mainly on the mansplain (D-40), Tuesday, 4 September 2012 08:30 (eleven years ago) link

i assume cut copy was too indie pop for teh dance massive? ill admit that i would have voted bob sinclair's "world hold on". maybe i should just make a list

The rain in Spin circles mainly on the mansplain (D-40), Tuesday, 4 September 2012 08:33 (eleven years ago) link

tim f otm re: Shakedown "At Night"

other songs I'm surprised not to see:

modjo "lady (hear me tonight)"
xpress 2 "lazy" (except in dog latin's list)
"groovejet"
"lola's them"

im sure theres more if i think abt it but w/e

in the 2-cheesy-but-cmon-its-still-better-than-[zing!] category, deepest blue 'deepest blue'

The rain in Spin circles mainly on the mansplain (D-40), Tuesday, 4 September 2012 08:46 (eleven years ago) link

ill admit that i would have voted bob sinclair's "world hold on"

not gonna lie, i would have voted for 'love generation' if i'd remembered it existed

v for viennetta (c sharp major), Tuesday, 4 September 2012 08:57 (eleven years ago) link

Lady would def be in my top 100 tunes. Also etienne de crecy's "am I wrong"!

Tim F, Tuesday, 4 September 2012 08:57 (eleven years ago) link

whats everyone's take on this as a moodymann track?

You mean that he originally put it out as a KDJ track in 1999?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=arsZacqvkc8

He's done that pretty often hasn't he.

Chewshabadoo, Tuesday, 4 September 2012 09:16 (eleven years ago) link

I voted for "At Night", and probably would have voted for "Lady" if I'd seen it - there's a bunch of 99-00 stuff which I think will slip between the two decade-in-dance polls. There's some frankendance/Modular/indieclash stuff I certainly danced to last decade (begrudgingly or not), but it didn't seem to fit. Not sure what kind of catchment something like Kavinsky would fall under.

re: Rex the Dog, he had a fairly much flawless run for a little while - that dub of Depeche Mode's "Photographic" (and the uh associated "Since U Been Gahan" via DJ Earworm) was way better than it needed to be.

etc, Tuesday, 4 September 2012 09:22 (eleven years ago) link

Been listening to a lot of these entries this week. Some I like well enough, many I must admit I find a bit of a snooze. That Still Going track is the epitome of snooze in my book - much duller than Spaghetti Circus. Other tracks I can't stand because they've been used in one too many TV adverts or DVD menus etc, although that's no fault of the track itself. I didn't really see what was so impressive about I Feel Space personally. I'd heard it a few times before and, well it's a nice little tune but it didn't blow my mind or anything. Oh well, sorry for the negativeness. There's plenty of stuff here that I do like too.
