Bodzin's sound has not dated well and I think most people understand what I'm saying here.
I can't recall a Luciano track that stands out. I mean his original track, not colab or remix.
― dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Saturday, 1 September 2012 04:07 (thirteen years ago)
it's funny then, because at least 50% of these tracks won't be remembered in a couple of years, either.
also anyone with ears can hear that "Liebe Ist" is a fucking rad track.

Awesome Luciano standalones or collabos off the top of my head:

"I mean his original track, not colab or remix."
― du mein bestie (micarl), Saturday, 1 September 2012 05:57 (thirteen years ago)
micarl., the reason why that argument doesn't stand up, to me, is that there are tons of remixes on this list! and luciano has done some rad remixes.
― for reasons of sass (the table is the table), Saturday, 1 September 2012 06:24 (thirteen years ago)
i think, though, that some of my problems with some of the tracks here is that they are explicitly "dance" tracks, and while i am very invested in dance music, i am more invested in "electronic" music.
thus, this remix of Salif Keita by Luciano, which ranks as one of my favorite remixes of the past ten years or so. it's so gorgeous, so lush, so ....

anyway, that was my way of saying, "sorry for being cantankerous."
― for reasons of sass (the table is the table), Saturday, 1 September 2012 06:28 (thirteen years ago)
also four of the tunes I listed were original standalone tunes.
― Tim F, Saturday, 1 September 2012 06:29 (thirteen years ago)
I actually like Bodzin, but, pretty much:
And yeah, Luciano deserves some sort of spot somewhere.
― formerly EDB (ed.b), Saturday, 1 September 2012 06:57 (thirteen years ago)
Bodzin's basic blueprint (robot-goth moroder) still seems pretty influential on a lot of the stuff playing in more underground gay clubs, I find.
I suppose its deliberate torpidity now would strike many as very mid-00s.
Wish I could find the 2006 Bodzin DJ set i used to listen to with stuff like "SL Mirage" and "Atlas" and "Miranda" etc. on it, felt really massive at the time.
― Tim F, Saturday, 1 September 2012 07:23 (thirteen years ago)
Arguably one of the upshots of the return of "proper" techno has been the almost writing out of history of that slower hard busted-machine tech-house sound that seemed (to me) so fresh and vital throughout the mid-00s - Bodzin's sound was the more minimal-influenced tail-end of this but I really think of it taking off in about 2002/2003 with Areal, Sender, some Sami Koivikko.
I remember tunes like Misc's "Momentum" and Basteroid's "Against Luftwiderstand" were absolutely massive for me - very much in a EBM vein but too meticulous and inventive in their production values too seem retro - which ironically is probably why all this stuff now seems really "off its time".
― Tim F, Saturday, 1 September 2012 07:34 (thirteen years ago)
sorry, "of its time" I mean.
2004 so pre-Bodzin, but this mix was enormous for me, I wish I still had it:

okay so that mix sums up a lot of what i like about that period of music, too.

(as in it doesn't download any longer, which is sad, but i know these tracks nonetheless)
― for reasons of sass (the table is the table), Saturday, 1 September 2012 08:22 (thirteen years ago)
when you guys start talking about minimal and tech-house and whatever is when my eyes glaze over :/
― The Reverend, Saturday, 1 September 2012 08:30 (thirteen years ago)
Do you like any more techno-oriented stuff rev?
― Tim F, Saturday, 1 September 2012 09:30 (thirteen years ago)
All this talk of mid decade tech house makes me want to go listen to Ripperton or something on Connaisseur again.
― Josiah Alan, Saturday, 1 September 2012 09:45 (thirteen years ago)
Sass: absolutely not, I don't even think I knowingly heard any of the Aeroplane stuff in this poll before the countdown. I hadn't realised Orange Mistake was 03, that's not too bad, but Luciano is soo ridiculously overrated on here, alongside a lot of other big-room minimal schminimal. If you want to see who I voted for, my votes are postd up thead though.
― Chewshabadoo, Saturday, 1 September 2012 10:18 (thirteen years ago)
Luciano is hilariously bad, vagabundos lol

This from the guy with four Mathew Jonson/Cobblestone Jazz tunes in his ballot.
― Tim F, Saturday, 1 September 2012 12:06 (thirteen years ago)
Also keep in mind that mental groove era early luciano is often a lot better than the Cadenza stuff he's known for too.
― formerly EDB (ed.b), Saturday, 1 September 2012 12:08 (thirteen years ago)
Hahahah, good call Tim. I think I hadn't listened to those Cobblestone Jazz tracks for a long time and they were just working for me when I polled. If you polled me again today I'd probably only have one Cobblestone in there and no Jonson.
― Chewshabadoo, Saturday, 1 September 2012 12:25 (thirteen years ago)
Although, I'd probably only say India In Me was minimal. 5th Element most certainly isn't, and Marionette is straight-up prog really.
― Chewshabadoo, Saturday, 1 September 2012 12:31 (thirteen years ago)
No jonson is pretty o_0 though, c'mon, marionette! typerope!
― formerly EDB (ed.b), Saturday, 1 September 2012 13:10 (thirteen years ago)
The only Jonson tunes I considered voting for were "Dump Truck" and "Typerope" and in the end neither made the cut. Not because they're not good enough, but the sheer glut of stuff I was in love with from that era means it's difficult to rep for it all properly.
Most annoyed at myself for leaving off "Ihre Personliche Glucksmelodie".
― Tim F, Saturday, 1 September 2012 13:34 (thirteen years ago)
It sounds familiar that track, good pick.

― The Reverend, Saturday, 1 September 2012 18:25 (thirteen years ago)
so no, not really.
― The Reverend, Saturday, 1 September 2012 18:26 (thirteen years ago)
1) Luciano's Sci.Fi.Hi.Fi mix is still a great document of a very specific time in electronic dance music.2) Luciano's "Octogonal" is still a really great, menacing slice of minimal.3) Anyone who put Cobblestone Jazz on their ballot can't talk shit about the "boring minimal" or whatever of the md-2000s. Cobblestone Jazz were, by far, the most overrated producers of that whole period.

and Rev, do you like UR stuff? Juke? Old Green Velvet or Cajmere?
Romanthony?
Nu Groove stuff?
― for reasons of sass (the table is the table), Saturday, 1 September 2012 20:55 (thirteen years ago)
Juke, yeah (but more the ghetto house-y end than the footwork-y end). Cajmere, yeah. Romanthony, eh. Not really that up on the other stuff.
― The Reverend, Saturday, 1 September 2012 21:35 (thirteen years ago)
I don't really think of Juke or Cajmere or Romanthony as "techno" tho.

I think there's a lot of techno and stuff that sounds more like techno (than house or dubstep or w/e) that rhythmically is quite interesting and would chime in well with the other dance music you like, even when adhering rather deliberately to a 4X4 beat (and i've rather deliberately chosen an example of such):

Separately but connected, a lot of minimal was really house but with a lot of the same kind of ideas about rhythm as a lot of post-dubstep you like:

that metope tune is fucking incredible. bomb tune.
― second only to popcorn (or something), Saturday, 1 September 2012 23:25 (thirteen years ago)
I know! I've always thought it was a bit underrated - Areal was one of those labels whose aesthetic (sonically, visually) was so strong that it was really hard for any artist other than Ada to define themselves separately during that era, and a consequence of that is that IME people tend to remember the Areal sound but not the individual tunes.
Which is an odd outcome given how idiosyncratic a lot of it was on a tune by tune level, and the fact that producers like Metope and Basteroid sound pretty different to one another.
― Tim F, Saturday, 1 September 2012 23:38 (thirteen years ago)
First track didn't do anything for me, second one was really good tho.
― The Reverend, Sunday, 2 September 2012 08:02 (thirteen years ago)
You might really like some of the techno on the edges of broken beat like Titonton Duvante.
